Fanbelt trying to escape.

My fan belt keeps trying to come off.

I've changed the fanbelt, vibration pulley, and guide pulley, but it still keeps trying to escape.

Any ideas what's causing it? Is it worth changing the tensioner pulley?

It doesn't look like the tensioner pulley is turning in that video.

Possibly it's just the quality of the video that's making it appear like it's not moving.

I've just checked it, and it's turning freely, and without any play.

The vid doesn't really show it very well, but there seems to be more vibration in the vibration dampening pulley than there should be.

My guess would be that it's this vibration that's causing the tensioner pulley to jump up and down so much.

As I say though, it's got a brand new vib pulley??

From the video it looks like your crank pulley is wobbling around too or something is putting it off balance

Possibly the inner rubber has deteriorated and putting it out of alignment, hence why the belt tensioner is jumping as the belt catches on the edge of the crank pulley

A quick google search comes back with a few issues with the VW tdi engine. The pulley rubber can look fine at the front but at the back its:

That's the vibration damping/crank pulley that I've replaced already unfortunately. :S

I'm just reading the last post in that thread on Volvoforum now though.

I'm gonna get a new bolt and do it up serious tight (160NM + 180 degrees if my memory serves me correctly), and let you know.
