Just moved into a house with a garage.... so finally I can do a proper project rather than having to do mods that I need to complete within a few hours so I can drive home after.... ;)

Having a rather nice potential setup of 2.4 T5 block with ported+flowed head, a rather large turbo and a bunch of other parts, I want to use these for a complete build on a (non volvo) track car that I'm making and want to get an understanding of the strengths of V70R or s60R AWD capabilities.

What sort of torque/bhp can the stock systems take? And is there any advantages to getting the later ones over the P1 V70r AWD... or even the Non-R AWD systems.

Single mass and Quaife will of course be in order, but any info on P1 vs P2 and the potential they have would be awesome!

Thanks!

Yes.

P1 AWD system is mechanical - P2 is controlled electronically.
Main advantages of the P2 AWD (HALDEX) over the P1 are:

1. Much quicker response
2. With the Haldex system, you won't have to worry about tyre tread depth (max 2mm) between axles.
3. Active chassis settings on the P2 play a major role in aiding the AWD system.

The P1R awd system is exactly the same as a P1 awd car, ie the XC
The P2 XC and P2R uses Haldex technology.

Thanks Lee - I'm basically making a mongrel of a mk2 VW scirocco and a Volvo 2.4 t5 (with a load of mods) and hoping to get standalone management and a 4wd system - I'm guessing the older one might be better suited to it as its far less 'digital' - I hear from some guys one swedespeed that they can hold a bit of power so might use that as a starting block....!

M66 gear box is pretty strong (at least IMO), at least compared to the collar and angle gear which does have its limits. (Though a MK2 Scirocco is a much lighter car than a S60R). The Haldex in the S60R/P2 V70R is a Gen 2 system with an AOC similar to that used in the Golf R32 (MK5). If you are looking for standalone systems you may be better with a controller aimed at the VW market, where people have put standalone controllers on 4motion retrofitted Corrados.

Thanks Santa,

Having very little experience with AWD systems I might be throwing myself in a little deep I feel - the original plan was to mate the 5 pot with an M90 geabox and RWD the car, but I've always been keen to set it to AWD. I guess the best way to do that would be to buy an entire R and take everything possible, sticking with the OEM ecu and get that mapped, but at the moment my research is saying 'take it easy, go RWD to start and then maybe push it on the next project!'

It would be one hell of an undertaking. For the work involved I'd be more tempted going RWD or an older awd system.

Totally agreed - but something I wanted to put some feelers out for, AWD would be awesome, but think a bit of a pipe dream at the moment....! :B_steerin:B_steerin:B_steerin

It is indeed one hell of an undertaking mate. I'd be asking myself, is it worth it?
Surely it would be better to invest your time and money in just buying a car with AWD already? Plus, you'll have the major issue of trying to insure it when it's done.

Haha - The sensible answer is no, it's totally not worth it, but for me its a project that I want to use all the things I have already and make something from it - the scirocco has some serious sentimental value - owned it for 12 years until it was stolen and joy ridden, but not set on fire luckily, but will need a complete overhaul, and having wanted to make it RWD/AWD since I bought it I thought I could use the B5244 I have sitting around and have some fun.... that with the added fact that I now own a garage means I can have a nice long project rather than just changing one item at a time! I'm sure it's 100% not the most cost effective way or even the best, but it's a challenge I want to undertake! I can't wait to start it!

fair play to you my Renault 5 is getting work done after being stolen, sometimes it's not about the value

the P2 AWD drivetrain has a wheelbase at least a couple of hundred mm longer than the Sirroco though. I have a copy of PPC magazine here, from May last year, with an article on building an RS1700T replica using a mark 3 escort body shell and a porsche 924 drivetrain....2400 mm wheelbase :)

IMHO it's how the toque is delivered, nice and linear, no squatting (as it does) dumping of the clutch and it should be good for 700nm, obviously with increased wear. If you go from 200nm-400nm in 200ms then you're going to wear it more.

Just my opinion.

Mine was recently replaced and was not really worn after 50k, factory original.
