Hi All, I have a problem with my s70t5, basicly once the car is warmed up and i park it up for about 10 mins or so, then start up again it puffs out blue smoke, this clears with a gentle rev. The same thing happens if stood ticking over say in heavy traffic jam then pull away. I have contacted 2 independent volvo specialists who have given different advice, one thinks valve stem oil seals the other seals in turbo. ANY ADVICE. Cheers

The fact is it could be both. Sounds more turbo to me from your description, but youve def got oil getting to the exhaust & burning off. How many miles? Have either the turbo or the head ever been refurbished? If it's done decent mileage on the original turbo then it'll be worthwhile getting it off for a refurb. It'll either fix the issue or point you towards the head.

Good luck. Morgan

Cheers Shinsplintz, to be honest only owned the car for a couple of month and no paper work to say either turbo or head been done. Mileage is 178,000 pulls like a train still, i have however noticed when the car was warm then parked up, then re started after about 10 mins or so it seem to hesitate on throttle then clears in about 2 seconds, it has also developed a further problem with a warning light that shows Fault in the engine electronic system which came on a couple of weeks ago. Which iam assuming is linked to the lamba sensor maybe getting oil on through the exhaust.

What happens to the smoke when you give it a booting?

Hi Doingitsideways, basicly there isnt any smoke, its only when car is warm then turned off sat for 10 mins or so then re started clears after 1 or 2 small revs, does hesitate sometimes when reving to clear smoke but then fine. If the car is left over night the started from cold its completely fine.

I'd go with stem seals then, myself.

If it was turbo seals, it would tend to smoke when on boost.

May be worth pulling the plugs out to see if there's any signs of contamination

^^^^above bought my `97 V70 T5 off me and after a while developed smoke on idle which he had repaired with the valve stem seals but before he bought the motor from me at 160,000 it developed smoking at idle after 10mins and so i changed the turbo for the 18T and it solved it.

So i would rather go for the turbo first as it is a lot easier and more cost effective to replace the oil seal.

They seem both to give problems at similar mileages!

Good Luck
