View Full Version : Bonnet flipped up.

Pulling onto the motorway this morning, my bonnet made a break for freedom. My own fault, unlatched it last night meaning to check something and forgot all about it.
Couldn't have happened in a worse place either, literally just joining a busy section of the M60!

Anyway, luckily my windscreen didn't take the hit, but my bonnet's kiffed along with the hinges.

Had a look when I got to work and it looks like the hinges are welded in to the body.
Has anyone ever changed them??

Oh, on the 850 btw.

the hinges aren't welded, can't remember if its 2 or 3 bolts on each side into the inner wing

yeh I would, it probably is possible with just the arch linings removed. But as your going to have to mess with the bonnet stay springs (which have ALOT of tension on them) i'd give yourself as much room as you can

You can undo it all from the top, without taking the wing off, but it's a right fiddle, I'm an expert at it :)

You can just see the three bolt holes in this pick, but look out for the spring :)

Not sure why but I found that one hilarious for some reason!

similar thing happened to a friends 306 Rallye. Nice 8V turbo in there, took off from a roundabout heading up the A9 and it popped up. Being french it smashed the windscreen, and the roof skin at the front although the bonnet was fine.

No, the bonnet stayed on, on this one, well just about, it ripped out the near side hinge and ended up by the drivers door :D

No such joy for me, Liam.

Morning rush joining a fast moving motorway, one of those split slip roads with the hatching between the joining lanes, I was in the outside lane. A couple of grand in tools in the boot and still half asleep if I'm honest.

Accelerating hard to try to slot into.the traffic, must have been doing 65, then BANG!! Now I'm awake!

I just about managed to squeeze myself onto the hatched bit before it ran out and someone saw what had happened and stopped to let me across to the hard shoulder.

Hi mate, had this happen to me last year, changed for an Egg Crate Grill and thought the latch wouldn't fit (it does, just has to sit to the side of the center..) and it flew up at 35mph, I had to replace the hinges and bonnet (eventually wings as they are a bit scuffed too).. This involved dis assembling the front end lights / facia and removing the wings.. Taking the wings off was a hassle as there is one tiny 8/10mm nut that on most cars has corroded on the inside (one near battery and opposite side, both behind the headlight units). In all honesty it was quite a hassle. Make sure you have some replacement retaining clips for all the skirting / plastic flashing for the wheel wells etc. Good luck.
