Hi
I was wondering if anyone could help me with the following. Looking to do a couple of things on my car and would like some real time advice pls :

1. My odometer has recently stopped working ( speedo is fine ). I have seen a kit on ebay that has a couple of replacement cogs, but not sure if this is what I need .. I would also rather buy genuine Volvo bits is its possible and not certain these are. Has anyone attempted this job ? Can you give me an idea of how long it'd take a garage to do so I can get an idea of labour cost ?

2. I have a bulb out on my instrument binnacle. Whilst the cluster is out, I may as well get some new bulbs. Does it make sense to replace all of them, or just leave the rest well alone ! Do Volvo do replacement set of bulbs ?

I don't want to do either of the above myself ..

3. I have some 302mm discs and new carriers, and I right in saying that I don't need new (longer) brake lines ? Either way, are they a decent upgrade or am I getting into potential trouble by freeing up old and probably corroded connections ?
Is there a pad of choice to use with this set up ? I had in mind the Ferodo DS but I think it might be overkill as I don't drive the car hard. Are 'police spec' pads still available ?

4. Any idea of how much a garage would charge to fit a PCV kit ?

5. If I revert back to a standard airbox set-up, am I likely to face any issues removing the cone filter (BMC I think) ? Just don't want warning lights coming up on the dash come MOT time !

Many thanks for any help

Hello there, great choice of car you have... But I am biased

I don't want to do either of the above myself ..

It's a simple job, you can buy a replacement cluster and just do a swap, should take no more than 30 mins

3. I have some 302mm discs and new carriers, and I right in saying that I don't need new (longer) brake lines ? Either way, are they a decent upgrade or am I getting into potential trouble by freeing up old and probably corroded connections ?

Ferodo DS are a great pad, but if you just want something for everyday you won't go far wrong than using genuine stuff, and fitting 302s you can use the same hoses

4. Any idea of how much a garage would charge to fit a PCV kit ?

Its a time consuming job so I'd look for about 5 hrs labour plus bits approx £75 PFV

5. If I revert back to a standard airbox set-up, am I likely to face any issues removing the cone filter (BMC I think) ? Just don't want warning lights coming up on the dash come MOT time !

Air box will be fine and will probably run better

Many thanks for any help

Hope this has helped.

Its a very straight forward job and shouldn't require more than 2hours labour. Im not aware if you can purchase a genuine repair kit however on this occasion you should be fine with what you've bought, they tend to break when reset whilst driving.

2. I have a bulb out on my instrument binnacle. Whilst the cluster is out, I may as well get some new bulbs. Does it make sense to replace all of them, or just leave the rest well alone ! Do Volvo do replacement set of bulbs ?

I'd replace only the bulbs that need doing personally.
I don't want to do either of the above myself ..

Sometimes the ones on the car will already be the correct length but seeing as its a safety critical part its worth renewing anyway. Its a common upgrade and you shouldn't encounter any major issues. Volvo pads are very good, haven't tried Frodo pads and not sure on the police spec pads.

4. Any idea of how much a garage would charge to fit a PCV kit ?

The kit is about £120 from FRF Volvo. Labour would probably be 5hours max.

5. If I revert back to a standard airbox set-up, am I likely to face any issues removing the cone filter (BMC I think) ? Just don't want warning lights coming up on the dash come MOT time !

You won't have any issues revert to standard. The original design is a good set up!

Many thanks for any help

Thank you both for your help.

Nealevo. Cheers ; I really love my car but it's the usual problem of finding a decent specialist for a 20yr old vehicle that isn't miles away and doesn't rip you off ! I'm not mechanically minded and, unfortunately, I like things done right. Thats why trying to suss out prices etc for work needs to be my starting point (assuming I might need to find a garage).

I think I would rather keep my original cluster and repair - Want to keep as much of the car as when I bought it and there's also the likelihood that cogs/bulbs will need replacing in the, well, replacement !

Looks like it could well be std pads and std hoses then. Are there any concerns about ordering the correct pads from the dealer ? Almost certainly they'll want to provide what my chassis number was originally supplied with (280s), or does this not effect the pad part number ? Assuming it'd be for a later car ..

Wow, 5hrs for the PCV. I'm not even sure mine needs doing ( was looking at more preventative maintenance ). Will try and get it checked first ..

Good news then re air box - something straightforward and cost free !!

Thanks again

oh, and is there anything I need to check in terms of application for my 850r when it comes to the replacement cog kit for the Odo ? They mention about VDO but not sure if mine is ??

I order all my parts for FRF Volvo Swansea on C3 account (forum discount). You just need to provide reg number, thats all they need, 302 setups use same pads as 280s. Changing the PCV is one of the best preventive maintenance measures you can do. As far as i know its the same kit for all 850s (odometer repair kit).
