Hello all

Just driving home from local trip and car starts spluttering. Engine light came on. Managed to get back with spluttering. Read code 1-2-1. MAF sensor signal faulty or absent. Tried to drive again with sensor connected. Engine started but stalled shortly after. It would start but didn't not like to be in Drive mode (auto box). Disconnected MAF. Things were better i.e. drivable, but still stalling when coming to a halt.

I assume this is a dead MAF?

Any other reasons for this beyond the obvious?

Cheers

Might be worth cleaning the sensor. What air filter you running with? Sensor might just be contaminated/dirty. Bit of carb cleaner might work.

Hi, I could try that. It's a K&N panel filter. Hasn't been oiled for a good while.

Well worth a try. Sometimes the oil from the filter can contaminate the sensor.

As above i'd clean first, although would use dedicated maf cleaner.

As the weather has not been great, I decided to get hold of a cheap one off flea bay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/331074407228?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT). I assume that this will be frowned upon by the purists. But I can buy 7 of these for 1 Bosch.

Some observations:
Having replaced the sensor and cleared the codes the car still failed to idle ran rough and stalled shortly afterwards (no code was thrown).
I restarted and opened the throttle for a minute or so, then it seemed to run better at idle, and got better as it warmed up.

It seemed stable enough for a drive, so off I went. Initially opening the throttle caused wheel spin and what felt like fuel cut (overboost)! That settled and the car began to feel more normal as I progressed.

After a few miles, acceleration still felt sharper in the lower range.

It seems that the ECU learns and re calibrates itself given a new air meter which is interesting as I wonder how it does that.... against what criteria... and how does it store the information?

Anyway main thing is that it seems to be operational again. :-)

Cheers

Well done. Did the old one look ok?

There was some oily residue on the side.... but the rest was difficult to see and I couldn't work out how to pull it apart. The senor unit has circlips at either end, but after removing them it did not want to part.
