New to this section so please be gentle!
I've spent weeks looking for a replacement to the vectra in a frock.
This came up on autotrader & also eBay last night at a price that wasn't to be sniffed at. Half day holiday for me & off to Manchester it was to see what state it was in.
Full independent service history, 1 previous (blind) owner & low miles for an 11 year old diesel saloon.
Quick test drive felt pretty flat, it doesn't seem to shift until 2k when the boost hits in but felt ok. On the way home it revealed a vibration at motorway speeds & also whilst breaking from speed. I'm thinking drop links but hoping to get it on a ramp & have a fiddle around. The body will need a session in my mates body shop for both rear quarters, rear n/s door & front bumper painting due to various scrapes & dents. I will hopefully have the wheels re-furbed at the same time.
All in all still feel I had a bargain & hoping to be easy fixes with a service & some love.
I'm sure I'll have a parts list soon lol
Anyone got any lowering springs? :)
Anyway, the pics.

They said the interior was grey but it looks pretty cream to me.
Comments, criticisms & advice welcomed.
I think from my research I've got a good model but time will tell. I guess it comes with the territory when your skint. :)

Think you got off lightly with the dents considering it was owned by a blind man and of course he's not going to know what colour interior it has :)

The pictures do a good job of hiding the dents mate. Both fist sized on the quarters. I think he liked the odd bollard & I was shocked to find he p/x'd it's for an xc60! It will be wrecked.
I think he got his guide dog to park as the alloys are kerbed rather well.

Woody never say never mate, I still have the option of the White 855 I know of.

I would just service it and drive it mate .aslong as the tyres at good that's what counts .they are good on fuel being a diesel and got 115bhp standard .i still like the 1.8 petrol though and they are nippy and good on fuel too

Petrol was a no go for me mate. It will be doing 300 miles a week & that doesn't include social trips. I'm buying oil & air filters this weekend & will have a poke. I've got to get it painted, I'm ashamed to drive it looking like I can't park!
Seat is the first job. :)

Will bare those in mind mate, not bothered at the mo. as long as its mechanically sound & looks well I'll be happy.
I've not tied the handling or braking yet, sort the issues & it will have a proper road test down my favourite roads.
will post more pictures when I have a fiddle at the weekend. :)

Managed to take her for a spin this evening after cleaning off 12 years of crusty crud off the engine & underside. Seems our blind man lived down a lane of some sort, will google it when I get the v5 back. She's not in bad shape at all, lines look good etc. The engine has come up ok, actually looks rather well & I don't normally clean under the hood. I will take some pics of my handy work when it's light. No leaks or dodgy pipes. I may clean the egr as reading up on the Renault engine it tends to get clogged. I know a terraclean agent who is keen to have a go at it. Is it worth it on a diesel? It does seem to be better every time I use it.
As for my vibration, I think I need a pair of bottom arms but without getting it on a ramp with a bar I can't get movement. I'm planning on new rear discs & pads. Still not sure if it's on handbrake shoes?
I've not touched the seat yet but reading I hope it's the switch with sweets, crumbs & whatever else is in it. The seat won't of moved much with 1 owner I guess.
Thing I'm most chuffed about??
I managed to switch the drl's off!! I'll say when my car has illumination thank you.
I've been reading about tuning boxes & remaps. I think I might have a play with it once we're kosher. :)
Biffs rather happy.

I wonder if my car was owned by the same person, as they were blind as well.

My car was supposed to be a short term daily though, so i've not done anything to rectify the dents, scratches and curb marks. I just keep on top of the mechanics and interior.

Liam it's pretty bad all around the rear, looks like it's been shot on the boot lid. Every time I look I find something else. Might be easier to have the lot painted.

Had a few hours tinkering today. First port of call was the seat. Checked all that I could see but eventually I decided to take the seat out for a closer look. Pretty glad I did.
Can you see my problem? :)

Found a grand total of £5.21 & also €1 euro so after a lot of swearing & hammering at the pound I now have a fully working drivers seat.
Whilst I was in the car I replaced the interior bulbs with led bulbs & removed the retro Nokia hands free & mic. Every Volvo I've owned has been fitted with one of those. :)
As promised here is a pic of my blinging (for me) engine bay.

Rather happy with the results.
Looking at my leather it could really do with a clean & re-dye in places.
Does anyone know how I can find out what colour the leather is please?
Should have my new wish bones, drop links & rear discs & pads this week.

Manchester, hey? Should have given us a shout for a brew.

Would have thought Volvo would be able to tell you from the VIN.

Sorry Steve it was Tues afternoon so thought you would of been on the graft? It was in Denton, literally just round the back from where I used to work in Hyde Details.
I'd definitely have a t4 now, mine drives cracking & reckon one with a bit of poke would certainly fit the bill.

Yeah, I was grafting in Urmston anyway. I live in Northern Moor (Whythenshawe) if you're ever over.

Nothing ever got sorted with the mini meet, although the other geezer organising it seems to have fallen off the face of the earth at the minute.
I'll have a think and try to sort something out when I get chance.

Like the motor, I picked this one up for £1k with 100k miles on it, I've stuck an eBay tuning box on it and get an extra 120 miles per tank so deffo worth it! 29855

P.s. Genuine volvo pads on the back, green stuff on the front. This is about 2000 miles between cleans. Could plant spuds in the muck on the rears, nowt on the fronts!

Is this a 102bhp model? I've read good things about the ebay boxes over on voc (info limited on this forum), I'm currently watching one for £77 from Poland. Has it improved the performance? I know with it being a diesel it will never set my hair on fire but every little helps as Tesco say.
I've had green stuff on a primera gt many years ago, I wasn't impressed but maybe they have advanced since then? My front brakes are relatively new but the rears are shot. OE pads & discs ordered & should be with me this week I hope. They are binding like crazy.

On another note, something I've not noticed until today on my commute (the cars first), the only speakers working are the tweeters. I've taken the stereo out today & everything is connected properly. Guessing they are blown.
Might have to raid my dads garage to see what sort of a sound system I can rig up.

I'm having trouble with mine but I suspect I have a boost leak, I was actually slowing down going up hill today so I'll whip the engine cover off on my dinner & investigate tomorrow. It couldn't pull your foreskin back at the minute!!
I'll certainly invest in one then as I can tell the mrs it will make it better on fuel. 120 miles is 2 days extra!

i think the method with a tuning box is to max it until it smokes & retard it bit by bit until the smoke clears. Diesels like a bit of lean burn. I don't understand these idiots that have them smoking sooting up everything.
The economy has really got me thinking.
It will mostly be used at 50-80mph so hardly going to be thrashing it.
I think I mentioned it before, I had a go at an 855td in the golf & it left me.

Oh I love some diesel power!

Plug in boxes can be good but some are just rubbish, and no timbo they are not all the same on the inside I've had a few apart to prove this point before.

If you want one to work with your ecu rather than fool it then you have to spend a bit of dosh. But each to there own.

Personally I'd get it properly mapped biff, A few companies do these and get real good results. Yours shouldn't feel that slow though so maybe a little service and check over plus a fuel system treatment and you should be back to normal.

Peas 'n' rice, this is hard work!

Yeah, I was really impressed when I got my 850, even more so considering it's done 300k!
Absolutely masses of torque, and that's what most people forget about dervs, when they start quoting bhp figures.
Diesels make TORQUE, simple as that. ;)

The AEL lump in the 850 is essentially a 1.9 TDi with another cylinder added on.
Prob not all that much difference in weight to the Golf, as they are a bit of a lard arse, so not really surprised you got your arse handed to you!

I might pop to see our local remap guy. He certainly knows his stuff with diesels. I don't want silly power as I'd like to keep everything standard. Which boxes are the better ones Martin? I like the idea I can turn it off when the wife has it. :)
I've got oil, filter, fuel additive, air filter & cabin filter waiting in my local motor factors. It will have to have red samco if it's a vacuum pipe leak.

Steve the golf is ok mate, keeps up with most diesels as its a 115 mapped to 135bhp with a 5 speed box. The wife loves it since it got mapped.
I said I was going to organise a dyno day at our local place but it never materialised.

Reading up I think I may clean my egr as I'm not sure off the service history its ever been done. The Tcv is £39 for a genuine one so that wont break the bank. Will whizz the map sensor off & clean it at dinner.
Car felt better again this morning but still convinced I've got a leak somewhere.

Just bought it a couple of weeks ago with a duff turbo but today found out turbo is like new after replacing it and the waste gate actuator is knackered.

Thanks for the comments..
They are nice cars, I've managed to get my wheels balanced this weekend which has sorted my high speed wobble. I'm waiting on a wind back tool for my calipers & then hopefully have my rear brakes sorted this week as my peddle is pulsing like crazy.
Managed to establish that I have no boost leaks, gave it a service (although it looked like it had been done yesterday) a full tank of nitro+ diesel & some reddex.
Acceleration is still very poor but improved a little. I really have to thrash it to get it to go (killing my mpg) & as stated between 1200 - 2000rpm the car is shocking. So much so that I'm scared I'm going to cause an accident! I've been sticking to the A-roads for my commute.
Any ideas what the best way to test the actuator would be?
I need to get this car sorted as its really an effort to use it at the minute.

Made a bit more progress today, changed the rear discs & pads & happy to report my brake peddle no longer pulsates like a black mamba. Good work. :)
I have stuck fuel additive in the last 2 tanks. It does feel much better but still have flat spots between 1500 & 2000k, also about 3k in 5th. I've changed fuel filter air filter oil filter & full oil change & cleaned the Egr. My mpg is bad, about 35mpg but I have been giving it some welly on the odd cold morning.
Walking the dog tonight it dawned on me I've not yet unplugged the maf.
Will try it tomorrow to see if it makes any difference.
The car drives 10 times better than it did. I need to get my dads easy bleed kit & bleed the clutch & brakes now. The clutch is a tad high.
As its my birthday on thurs I've asked everyone for money as I need a new head unit & possibly some upgraded speakers & cabling. How far I go depends on how well it sounds with just speakers, I have a Phoenix Gold 12" sub, Jbl 400w amp & a power cap. How good a sound I can get from the saloon body I don't know, I could possibly port the arm rest recess like i have in past cars.
I'm half tempted to loose the wood inside. It does give an old man feel with the grey/cream interior.

The fact the flat spot moves dependant on the gear I'm in.. My old v70r was the same.
Read a bit about maf cleaning spray, I will try that first then chuck on a new genuine one.

Biff, what are you doing next Sunday? I ask cos I might be coming down to Wrexham for a breast cancer charity dog walk. I have maf cleaner and do you fancy joining us for a tenner? You and the dog have to wear one pink item..............

Lol cheers for the offer mate but it's my sons first birthday or I'd be on the Evo triangle run. Where is the walk?
Disconnected the maf today & it feels more responsive up to 3000rpm.
I do think it's maf related.

Went to see our friendly maintenance man today in work & "borrowed" some electric conductor cleaner to blast the maf with.
I can report no flat spots up to 3k but I couldn't open it up to see how she went due to the fog & 60mph being my limit.
The cars been great for cheap fixes & is saving me a fortune. £145 a year to tax too!
Now the mechanicals are sorted I hope to sort some tunes as I'm driving in silence or with my headphones in. 60 mile round trip is getting boring but at least I don't have any annoying squeaks!

If you aint too fussed about the type of head unit, I have a reasonable one ( cant think of make or model ) that I removed from my soon to be sold/scrapped Audi A4. Send me your address and I'll post it out in the morning. I will post later tonight what it is as it is rattling around in the rear of my Avant A4. Reckon I should get my T4 back from my mate and let him use the Avant !!

Thank you very much for your kind offer! I've already got a brand new alpine head unit compatible with my phone. £36 delivered is not to be sniffed at. I'm in need of a facia which is cheap enough & the adaption loom. I'm a bit puzzled as to whether it has an amp or not as it has the plug.
I am now enjoying driving it, it's not what I'm used to performance wise but I like it. My wife's golf is much quicker but I can work on that in time. I would love to try a t4 now I've had this. You should get it back. :)

Cheers dude! From what I can see on my phone you car looks bang tidy!
To host pictures your better off using photobucket as its probably the easiest way. Be great to see some pics of yours, wheels look right up my street! Have you started a build thread?
Us v/s40 owners are rare although we have a slammed v40 with huge wheels local to me.
Definitely be interested in the springs in the new year, although not sure what difference mine would be being an s40?
From what I've read about 145bhp is my max with the standard set up, as much as I'd love to decat it & remove the egr I'm trying to keep it sensible as a daily so I can eventually get another t5 to add to the fleet.
With the head unit, I have an amp adapter lead off my old v70, it's the grey & green plug I need. I'm hoping my double din to single din adapter fits from my old v70 also. I'm still unsure whether I have an amp, I've got the plug but can't find it in the boot where I have read it is. My car is well spec'd so would of thought it has got one.
Cheers for the response.

Next up I need the wiring harness to connect it to these plugs.

Found one on eBay for £9.99 but it's for an s80. Surely these plugs must be the same.
Pictured are the plugs I think are for the amp, if it exists?!

Fitted the new juke box. Please with it, discovered that the v70's double din adapter fitted with another facia that I got with the original kit. The speakers don't work though but I managed to find my amp.
Next up new speakers!!
