View Full Version : Oil Burning Scrapper...

Well, recently paid a trip to a Volvo breakers to get Jamest5r some replacement roof strip/rail plastic thingy mi bobs...

I ended up not only paying a tenner for some rails but buying an MOT failure that had been parked for 9 Months with no real history in limp mode and on a complete whim.

Now a three Volvo household...

The previous owner had put the car in for some work after a mechanical failure and given up hope... really this was a silly decision but it seemed to pay off.

Essentially I ended up taking home a 54 reg D5 SE Sport V70 for well under a grand.

A couple of days work later, new handbrake shoes, refurbished brakes, couple of replaced o-rings, a full service, new cambelt, new water pump, new power steering pump, new auxbelt and a replacement throttle pedal and I've seen an completely un-roadworthy and barely drive-able car pass and MOT and drive like a dream.

The best part... including all parts, MOT and the purchase of the car I've still not touched a grand! :)

It seems with this one luck has been on my side... for now!

Also decided to fit my newly refurbished pegs as the wheels were a bit tatty and tyres made my Minimum Gripicus or something.

Plans???

1. A bloody good valet
2. If I keep the pegs on and stumble across an R bumper maybe fit that
3. Possibly a remap.

Well done for saving it from the scrapyard, just shows that with a bit of knowledge, a potential scrapper can be saved. :B_thumb:

Give you 200 quid for your old v70 :)

Does it include the obligatory curly wurly???

On a serious note already have a couple of potential buyers for the 2.5d, going to put a fresh mot on first for peace of mind. Can't believe how much p1 v70 diesels go for!

What I find amazing, is that faults aside, a clean motor like that should find it's way to the scrappers

If it'd been put on Gumtree for £495 I bet the phone wouldn't have stopped

Well done for picking up a bargain mate (-;

I think I need another Volvo. regretting the Saab this week after a £450 parts bill with more to come.
The P2 looks a nice car mate, 3 Volvos is a bit greedy. ;)

Banana, had your's not been a million miles away and I was after one I'd have bitten at the chance. That said if I wanted one distance wouldnt have mattered.

This one was a accidental... I definately didnt intend on buying a car that day!

Cheers Gents, I have a couple of potentials close to home. If neither turn out or are a waste of time ill post a for sale ad on the forum. I'm only after back what it owes me which is less than what they usually are listed for.

Welll decided to clean the egr plenum today, I'd been reading a lot about them clogging.

Such a simple job too, considering how gunked it was it can't have been doing any good.

Just some boring maintainance today, decided with the pegs and new Pirelli tyres all round to treat her to some hunter wheel alignment.

Front and back were both out by quite a bit. Worth the 70 quid I think. More important no more mini cab off centre steering!

Well the d5 is dead... Driving to work and as I came to a stop at traffic lights I heard some almightly clanking and snapping plastic sounding noises.

Opened the boner and the auxiliary belt which had not long been replaced has snapped, wrapped itself around the crank and taken out the cambelt and tensioners.

No pictures of yet but peed off to say the least, I cannot fathom the failure, all aux tensioners, idlers and aux components are free and working fine, nothing seized. What caused the failure is anyone's guess.

No particular pictures of yet as I abandoned her at the roadside in layby and will collect it tomorrow with a trailer. Needless to say I now need a new engine...

Ah, crap! :(

Sorry to hear this, Fella.

Hope you manage to get it sorted, one way or another.
You had yourself a cracking daily there, for not much outlay at all.

As for reasons why it happened, is the tensioner still taught? Ie, is the spring still strong?
Also, what's the crank pulley like? If the vibration damper is shot inside, it makes them wobble so could have thrown the belt off the first pulley?

All a bit trivial I know :(

Thanks all, fortunately works lent me a car to come home in tonight.

As for repair, seems a no brainer, its far too good to break but it's going to take time to find a reasonable prices reasonable miles engine to replace it and most seem around 500-1000 quid for just the lump. Problem is of course when you start taking this all apart it's silly not to inspect seals etc and renew and while its off a clutch is a no brainer and inspection of flywheel may see Bill as high as 1500 quid. I'll ponder options for a while but despite high miles (215k) it's otherwise in good nick.

As for what's caused the failure, time will tell... once I get time I'll arrange a trailer and tow her home with the t5-r.

As Pete's mentioned t5-r is also not in best health at the minute as she needs a clutch but hopefully with the big mans help we can get that done... Sods law I was going to park it up for the winter so put a clutch in the t5-r and an lpg kit is way cheaper than repairing the d5 so guess it'll be that parked up over the winter instead.

Thanks guys.

Recovered her this evening, with the T5-R and a lovely Brian James tilt trailer. I was amazed how well the T5-R towed it considering trailer and D5 combined I'm sure weighed about half a ton more than the T5-R.

Ironic really that the most reliable Volvo is the oldest... that said baring the engine isn't this one a ford? Who knows all I know is older brother dragged her home.

First thing is to SORN and during my time off next week ill begin to tear it all apart and try see if anything in the engine is salvageable. I've spoken to my mate at the local Volvo scrappy and he has said I can have a used set of belts and tensioners to play with. Then put it all together again and see what happens, If I'm really lucky the engine will be ok, if not new engine :(

Finally managed to spare some time today to take the car apart.

Wheel arch liner out cambelt cover, many struggles, swearing and bloodied arms and the old belts are off...

On inspection its definately the aux belt thats failed, I still cant see why however, wrapped round and jammed cambelt shearing the cambelt tensioner off the car, sadly looks terminal. The metal taped hole where the tensioner mounts has snapped in half! Unless anyone has VIDA and can confirm this does come off ( I cant see how) then sadly I cant put a belt on and re-time to see if its ok. Looking how tensely locked the belt was its entirely possible it effectively locked the engine however I suspect the slackened cambelt probably did cause some damage.
