The last number is the number of doors

854 is a saloon, 855 is an estate

850 just means the range so could be either of the above

(I didn't know this either first time I saw someone mention it)

850's:

854 - 4 doors (saloon)
855 - 5 doors (estate)

Same for 7, 2, 9 , etc... series. It's a yankee thing that we adopted at some stage!
