Gearbox probs

A mate has been offered a 95 850 T5 but the orange arrow which should light up in winter/L/3 mode is flashing and stays on whatever mode the box is in. The S/E button lights also flash continuously. The box changes fine in D but it obviously has a problem. Could this just be a faulty switch or is the box well on its way to being knackered.
