V70 P1 Alarm issue....

Ok so i park the old on my mums driveway so as to avoid the kids round her wrecking her.

Yesterday my mum said the hazards were flashing so i nipped on (only 6 doors away) as i thought the alarm had gone off. Now we all know you cannot miss the alarm on these things but she said she heard nothing. Opened her up looked inside nothing a miss and hazard button working fine.

Thought nothing more of it.

However, same again today, so i have just sat in her with the window open, set the alarm and waited for the deadlocks to kick in and low and behold, the hazards flashed, interior lights came on, but no alarm siren!! This concerns me greatly for obvious reasons!

Anyone every had this before, or know where I need to start looking?

Your alarm siren has batteries in it , they have leaked and damaged the circuit board.
Best bet is replace the alarm siren with a new one or one from a scrappy, you have to cut them open to check them.
They are plug and play to replace. I think Rufe sells them new , they are about £100 if i recall.

New alarm sirens are ballpark £160-£170 if purchased from FRF Volvo Swansea or ebay. They come as a kit, and you can either drill the pop rivets out of your front drivers side wheel arch to access it, or remove the bumper. Drilling the rivets out is the easiest option as it can be done quite easily with 1 person. No need to jack the car up or even remove the road wheel if you have a small enough drill. There is a security bolt holding the siren frame to the vehicle chassis/bodywork. I found this the hardest part to remove, as it was stuck solid. Hammer and chisel job to remove. The kit comes with a new security bolt so don't be afraid to deform the old one.

This is if you need to replace the whole unit. If your car has only started to do this, you may be able to salvage the siren module, as the battery may not have leaked yet. It will cause a parasitic drain on your main battery, so the quicker you sort it the better (unless you pull your alarm fuse). You can remove the module and cut it open where the black plastic meets the grey plastic. Be careful, go slowly and use a fine hacksaw blade. Once opened you can inspect the circuit board. If it hasn't been damaged by battery acid, you can replace the battery with a doorbell battery (7.2v iirc). If it has been damaged by the battery acid, you will need a new module.

Just realised you have a P1. What I have said above refers to P2 models, but it may still be applicable, though the methodology and costs involved may be different. Got a bit excited there. Ohh err :)

I salvaged an alarm module from an S80 for a tenner , cut it open with an oscillating saw , checked the battery was good , resealed it using Araldite, popped it in , all working perfectamundo.
Dancakes explanation is exactly right. Its an easy fix if your old battery has just failed and hasnt leaked onto the circuit board.
I think Maplins sell the battery pack .

The alarm module is not necessarily buried in the wing on a P1 , on my C70 it is under the bonnet if i recall.
It is deffo in the front of the drivers front wing on a P2.

Also i believe its fuse 6 for the alarm isnt it?

Not sure Spook, I think it is fuse 38 on a P2, someone will pop up who knows more , I have a P2 T5 and a P1 c70 , but I have never had any problems with the alarm on the C70 so I havent had to locate the siren , .. Yet ! It is a very common problem.

No worries dude... will crack out the manual :)

Ive had 2 T5 and this R and never known of this issue before LOL. May look to just replace the battery every 2 years or something to make sure it dont happen again :)

I'm almost certain the alarm module is located in the same place as the P2's (drivers side front wheel arch). Fuses 2 and 10 show up as being relevant on a google search, but whether this is correct is unknown. If you PM me your vin I can check everything out on VIDA.

They last about eight years , or at least the Volvo ones do. Someone is. Breaking a similar car to yours on here at the moment , might be worth checking if the alarm module is available.

I had trouble with my old R. The siren made like a knocking/tapping one night from outside. I read up & managed to salvage mine with a battery from maplins. I managed to Dremel mine open & used a hot glue gun to stick it back.

Think I'll probably just leave mine, the immobiliser still works and that's the main bit well for me it is.

Anybody know if the security bolt can just be replaced with a normal bolt if I need to smash it off? Also is it just an Allen key fitting with a nipple in the middle?

You can replace the security bolt with a standard bolt no problem. The one that came with my kit had an allen key drive that snapped off when tightened. You are left with a round bolt head with no means of removal. You can cut a slot in it with a hacksaw and use a screwdriver to remove it, or hammer and chisel it off.
