View Full Version : 460 Turbo

So, thought it was probably about time I started a project thread for this.
A little old skool for VPC, but seems the best place for it.

Anyway, here cometh the project thread for the last series 1 460 Turbo auto in the counry. Probaby. According to Howmanyleft anyway.
There were two, I had the other one before this, but that was nicked and chased around the local park by the wardens, eventually winding up literally nose down in a bush after catching some serious air.

I've had this one for a couple of years now, I think. Hard to keep track with my ever changing fleet.

Started off a bog standard car, aquired from Jamesy:

1993 460 CD Turbo auto, lovingly thrown together in an old DAF factory in Holland
B18FT - 1.7 Renault sourced engine, shipped to Porsche who designed the forced induction system. A whole 120 rampaging dutch horses.
Garrett T2 (tiny) turbo with intercooler.
Automatic slushbox.
Vague-o-matic steering.
Metallic urine in colour, as described by James himself.

Jamesy named it Ray-le-Otter, after the sweary Viz character.
Apparently, it broke down once, and when he opened the bonnet the French engine stared back at him and said "££££ you Monsieur!"

Only pic I could find. Shows how it appeals to the laydees.

Next came a "Robou" modded ecu. Robou is a bloke off of the 480 club forum who mods ecus.
All 400 series use the same running gear.

That made the boost guage do this: :)

I stuck an eggcrate grille from an early 440 and a late boot spoiler on.

It met a couple of members while serving as holiday transport:

Jimbob:

Then came a set of graphite wheels:

http://i1137.photobucket.com/albums/n518/doingitsideways/IMG-20150509-WA0001_zpsjauzqzhq.jpg (http://s1137.photobucket.com/user/doingitsideways/media/IMG-20150509-WA0001_zpsjauzqzhq.jpg.html)

That's pretty much as it stands at the minute.

Currently putting out around 170-180bhp. Probably more likely the lower.

Want more :)

Just changed discs and pads all round along with new rear calipers, as the handbrake mechanism is built in and is an utterly ££££e design, so always jam up.

http://i1137.photobucket.com/albums/n518/doingitsideways/DSC_0553_zpssvd7poef.jpg (http://s1137.photobucket.com/user/doingitsideways/media/DSC_0553_zpssvd7poef.jpg.html)

Now, for those of you always complaining about your 280s, or even 302s, spare a thought for those few of us still insane enough to run 400s...

Front:

http://i1137.photobucket.com/albums/n518/doingitsideways/DSC_0527_zpsrhfyl9za_edit_1431184084847_zpsqkonz4l i.jpg (http://s1137.photobucket.com/user/doingitsideways/media/DSC_0527_zpsrhfyl9za_edit_1431184084847_zpsqkonz4l i.jpg.html)

Rear:

http://i1137.photobucket.com/albums/n518/doingitsideways/DSC_0528_zps47dx832x.jpg (http://s1137.photobucket.com/user/doingitsideways/media/DSC_0528_zps47dx832x.jpg.html)

That's a whole 255mm up front and 225 at the back, folks!
Christ, the N/A and anything below 2.0 cars have solid front discs too!
Lol

There's pretty much nothing available for 400s, so I'll probably stick some grooved discs on in future and braided lines with decent fluid to firm the pedal up a little :)

Doingitsideways
Saturday 9th May 2015, 16:36
So, plans...

Better stoppers like I said.
40mm drop on Lesjofors springs (OE manufacturer, and about as good as you can get for a 400. Had PI springs on a 480, they were crap)
Bilstein B4s all round (again, as decent as available)
Poly bush what I can with what I can get hold of/make fit
T3 from a 940td to replace the standard T2
Slightly bigger injectors, don't know what yet though
ATF cooler
Oil cooler, both to replace the crappy standard items.
2.5" stainless exhaust.
Erm... Probably more, that I can't think of at the moment.

Then see what goes bang first.

My target is around 220bhp.
A little optimistic maybe, and not all that high by modern standards, but if I get there remember that this little thing only weighs around 1100kg.

Should be fun :)

Cheers Dave. No need to sound so surprised though! Lol

I've got a couple of other sets of wheels in stock that I'm toying with.

Still have the Ronals, but think it would need to be really low to pull them off.
Also have a set of 17" classic twin 5 spoke TSW s (forget the name) in graphite. Might be a little big though for a 400 really, needing mega low profile tyres.
Edit: Here they are fitted to a 480 before I bought them:

Personally, I'd stick with the Taurus(?) and try the R Turbos when it's down ;)

Cheers guys.

Yeah, the jury's still out on the TSWs. But they only cost me postage from Glasgow, so not so bad.
Think the Ronals will probably end up being fitted once it's been dropped.

Took it to see Craig (TC) yesterday.

He looked at some bits of paintwork for me and the rear arches that have started to let go.
Hopefully get them sorted before they get too bad. Anyone who's had a 400 will know it's frightening how fast the tin worm tears through the rear end of these once it starts :(

Been looking into this a bit further.

Lots of digging around on the 480 forum and Renault forums seems to suggest that my current setup is about the limit.
170ish bhp is pretty entertaining in a 1-ton car, and 100bhp-per-litre is still pretty good for what is essentially a converted diesel engine, so old-skool it doesn't even have a crossflow head.

However, I'm a stubborn £££££££ and don't like to be beaten.

So, I already have the T3 from a 940td, so that will eventually be modded slighty so it'll bolt onto the T2 flange on the manifold.

Currently thinking something along the lines of standard T5 injectors might fit the bill.
Problem here is that live mapping is out of the question due to the old-skool management being made of dinosoars or something.
Apparently, it uses the lambda to control fuel trim below 3k revs, but after that it guesses as best it can, presumably from the MAF readings. That's the reasoning behind the T5 injectors, they should be reasonably oversized enough to flow the extra fuel needed on boost, but the ecu should be able to back them off at lower revs enough that it won't just spit Optimax out of the exhaust.
There is/was a modded ecu knocking about on the Renault forums that apparently removes all limits from the mapping. I'm not into this though, as the current set up would back off if it detected knock. I think I'd be getting to see one or more of the pistons very quickly!
Also, as the system uses a BCV, I need to find a way of tricking the ecu, as 14psi is all that it'll let me run before it cuts fuel.

On the list also is a cam from a N/A car. Not ideal, but better than the standard Turbo cam, as they're supposed to be pretty lame as Volvo wanted the turbos to drive like they were N/A.

Or I could just bolt a supercharger to it.

What would Colin do?...

Don't know if they still have any or how good they are...http://www.efi-parts.co.uk/index.php?productID=167

or....T5 injectors, bigger turbo & standalone ECU maybe?

//edit

ah you need to send them your ECU and they will modify it....Chris is the guys name, he might be a good contact to answer what other modifications you need to allow higher than 14 psi without going pop

Aye, that's the one I'd seen.

Although, reading it back it says that it's available for pretty much every other colour ecu bar mine.
This one's red, if you remember? Seem to remember something from Robou about these having 2 boards instead of just the one.

Come to think of it, Ray's a '93 auto and has a red ecu. Your new 440 may be the same, rather than the blue that you're hoping to shoehorn in there.

Well, been a while.

It's looking like I'm not going to be converting this bad boy to a manual now, or at least not for the time being.

Instead, in case it turns up in the shortlist for shed of the year, I've sold one of my knackers and spent waaaaay more than the car's worth on parts to start to bring it up to scratch.

Either here or on the way:
Exhaust,
Crank sensor,
Plugs, leads, dizzy cap and arm,
Ignition coil,
Ignition amplifier,
VW recirc valves,
Braided brake lines,
Super blue brake fluid (or it's replacement),
-40mm Lesjofors springs,
Bilstein B4 dampers (about as good as it gets for a 400)
Poly bump stops and wishbone bushes.
Probably something else I've forgotten.

Oh, as well as putting the gearbox back in.

Should keep me out of the pub for a while...

A few reasons really.

The 460 I was swapping things around with is rotton as a pair and I'm not prepared to throw a fortune at it to sort the bodywork. Craig (Tomcat) was going to do me a favour with it and do it for a decent price, but he's not in a position to now. Thinking of breaking that one for all it's goodies - leather, A/C etc.
It's either the last auto turbo, or second last depending what sort of day Howmanyleft is having, and there is a purist in me somewhere.
Thinking that if I'm going to throw a load of money at something long term, as my Capri is going, I want to do something a bit special with the 480.

(please be aware that I am actually bipolar, so will have probably changed my mind by tomorrow )

Either that, or some Scousers called round. Not sure.

Also waved goodbye to my beloved 480 :(

Not sure I can survive with only one 400 series to worry about.
Oh yeah, I still have another don't I?
Hard work keeping track...

Shame to see the 480 go mate but they are hard to keep on the road, especially with a fleet of other cars & bairns to look after. Not to mention working daft hours

Aye.
Maybe I'll get another one day and do something insane with it.
Maybe.

So, when I get around to it I'm gonna be breaking the facelift 460 I have floating around.
Floating isn't too far from the truth, as it's leaking water so badly whenever it rains, hence it's new name - The Age of Aquarius.

Anyway, the idea is to rob it of all it's goodies. Leather, facelift dash, door cards, A/C, etc.

Thinking maybe a set of front seats from a 480 Celebration could work well:

Facelift rear lights to go in, will reuse the black numberplate surround though and not use the red coloured infill panel that the facelift rear end came with. Same as I did with my old 460T before it was nicked.

Old:

New:

Also, can't make my mind up whether or not to use the facelift front end.
I like the old-skool front of the 460 as it is, but then I also like the baby P80 look of the facelift.

Old:

New: (clue, the 460's on the right )

can do

forgot to say think I prefer the new style rear lights

ps if you put those seats in from the breaker 460, on the next sharp corner you will dissappear out of the window, no side support at all. Should wipe clean easily though

Pmsl!
That's why I'm thinking of 480 front seats. Still not fantastic support, but better than these!

Yeah, I do like the facelift rear lights
Only thing is they're red and clear, where as the front indicators will still be orange. Not sure if it'll look daft.

Oh, forgot to say that I tried the 480 chin spoiler and even though the shape of the bumper looks very similar, it's a good foot too short.
Like many things in life I suppose.

they are very nice & comfy though. Don't think anyone will notice the indicators tbh although you will now you've said it!!

Never mind the length look at the width :uglyhamme

It's ALL about the girth. Ask Louise!

I may only have a 6" nob, but she seems to like it that wide ;)
