I need at some point in the near future some new front shocks.

carparts4less have sachs shocks at £72 each

http://www.carparts4less.co.uk/cp4l/c/Volvo_850_2.3_1996/p/car-parts/suspension-and-steering/suspension/shock-absorber/?635660040&1&4c9704b17b22cd6e2d09f6cd6f4db45ec6256057&000925

partsforvolvo have the same sachs and also some 'meyle' which are only £46 which seems very reasonable.

I guess the 850 R hasn't got extra special shocks different to the T5. Its only the springs that are different i.e. lower?? Is that right?

Recommendations welcome.

My 850R is currently off the road and only does a couple of thousand miles a year during the summer. It may not come out this year due to ££ as ideally it needs new shocks (front offside misting, they do feel past there best), new battery, and some track rod end work.

Cheers T.

Just get a set of oil shocks as anything will be a major improvement over old shocks and with being oil they will be smooth than gas shocks I'm just about to get a pair of sachs shocks from euro set an account up your will get a decent saving

I just decided on Bilstein B6 (on an S70R)

Ok im gonna give my input. Bilstiens b4s are what i went for all round. Rear shocks are apparantly different the mounts??.
Rides amazing..
Now if unlike me u have got the extra readys££££ i would suggest b6s.

Thus said my origional shocks and springs had covered over 180k so anything would have been an improvement.

I know many would suggest coil overs. My argument is. Its an R and should be kept near origional

Bilstein B4's then parts for volvo have them and they are pretty cheap.

Wots the difference between B4's and B6's,, yeah I know 2 lol, but which is better for fast road use , are B 6 a bit harsh ?

Well I can only comment on b4's, I drive my car pretty hard and coupled with eibach pro springs I find them a great compromise between performance and ride quality.

About 300 quid! Hopefully B6 are better with lower/stiffer springs cos I've just bought a set...!

Who makes the standard shocks for the 850R??

Think it was probably Boge/Sachs.

I know they made the self levelling nonsense on the rear.

2nd that. Only thing I'd say is B4's ride very slightly higher than Boge/Sachs; something to do with being gas filled I think. Annoys the hell out of me; but the ride and handling, coupled with eibachs is damn good.

hey well ive had both b6's and b4's on my old t5 and i found the b6's to harsh. i sold them on and bought b4's

the b6's are standard length but stiffer. when i replace mine on my R b4's alround will be going on

I really like the b6s on the gull with lesjford springs, I'd say a very good compromise. The other 850 is on koni yellow and eibachs which again are very good.

I also liked the koni oranges, very comparable to b4s and they are gas shocks, very good for the price.
