Odd question, but does anyone have an idea of how high an oil cooler could be placed?

Want one on your roof vent? I imagine the pressure it runs it should be fine although I'm not sure if anyone's done anything as extreme as you

The only thing I can think of if the oil drained back to the sump when not used you would end up with low oil pressure until the hoses cooler filled up with oil on start up.

So, with one of these in the system, it should be ok :)

I guess that would solve that.:)

Good, I'll have a go at that then :)

I know I would worry about the reliability of the non-return value, but I suppose the rear engine would start to show a longer time to build oil pressure compared to the front one, could the cooler not be fitted behind the rear bumper splitter to the rear of the radiator and share it's airflow

what about a normal D5/RS oil cooler on the sump

That the best crap you can come up with James, I'm more than happy to ask questions, the difference between me and you is, I will act on the advice given and not just ignore it.

tried to find one but couldn't...will provide! R5 has a whole lot less metal than the Volvo though!

I had been wondering if you could neatly fit an oil cooler into the in the very back corners of the car where the vents go out to behind the bumper sides, I'll get a pic tomorrow to make it a bit clearer

There is no room for a side vent as the Volvo is a 5 door and not a 3 door so there is actually no space :)

Couldn't the cooler be installed at the front behind a bumper grille & then just plumbed through to the rear?

I suppose it could, but there are two intercoolers an oil cooler and a supercharger all ready at the front, so I suspect space would be an issue, where as I have plenty of space in the roof scoop.

This is where I was thinking, it's screaming out to have a 19 row bolted in above and ducted out through the hole kindly manufactured by Volvo....what do you think Colin ?? it would remove the need to run hot oil to the roof and you have the choice of which side you want it on there should be more than enough airflow coming down from the roof scoop to cool it as some of that air will venting out of there naturally unless you've blocked them during your build

No, its off a racing Ford Puma

The question was how high can an oil cooler be placed, not where I should put it, people should stop double guessing what is going on with the car and just wait for the updates, side and rear glass will be replaced but you will all just have to wait to see what will be happening to them :)

when you put it like that - the answer is related to oil pressure in terms of static head/metres. I don't know what the standard oil pressure is on these car but can see on the net that the oil pressure switch low is 0.5 bar

worst case 0.5 bar = 5 metres (of water), so pumping up to roof should be no problem at all

And with that information, this is now where the oil cooler lives.
