Ive just had to replace the upper mounts (rubber bit with bush) but with the whole unit ack on the car I'm noticing agape between the top mount plate and the rubber donut bit. is that normal? Hope someone understands what parts I'm on about lol. cheers

Assuming you mean the plate which sits under the top nut yeah mine had done the same thing and I've read of others that have done also.
I think it is normal and they do tend to settle after a little while. Others will confirm though as I have only done this a couple of times.

Yeah its sitting a couple of ml higher off the main mount.
