View Full Version : Saffron S70R manual

I guess I ought to say hello as I have been around the forum for a couple of months and made a few posts but haven't really introduced myself. I previously owned an S70 LPT CD which was a great realiable car but was always lacking something....

So some of you may know the Saffron S70R that was up for sale a few weeks ago and been around the forums for a few years. Me and my brother (BunkaT5) went up in his 850 to pick this up on Friday, as soon as I saw it I was instantly in love and any doubts about the colour shot right out the window.

The car has had a few subtle things done but nothing major-

Anthracite painted wheels
Crystal type headlights (after market ones by the looks but they look a lot fresher than the original type)
Strut brace which could be standard for the R but I'm not too sure
Gutted car and a home made exhaust which sounds surprisingly good and it uber quiet until the car is on boost
Cone filter for some chatter
Forge actuator
Rica 310 map with receipt
Blue injectors
Walbro fuel pump
DIY RIP kit
Braided brake lines
Coilovers
and a few other bits and bobs

Overall the car drives and pulls fantastically and I'm really happy with it. It is quite a head turner whether they think some granddad has fake tanned his Volvo when I drive past I don't know but who cares. But some people give a smile when they see the R badge and know what it is.

There are a few little bits need doing which I would like to sort-

Front disks are quite pitted and when I felt the inner side the pad is only touching half the disk. Annoyingly the pads are very very new looking genuine Volvo ones :(

It has a horrid gear knob which needs to go. Been thinking about a wooden one to match the 850R wooden steering wheel

I would like to look into a custom remap as it it just running a generic map which is not specifically set up for this car with blue injectors, 18T, Forge actuator etc.

Also I would like to get a full exhaust system at some point but the current one sounds great and is MOT "friendly" from the looks so this is no major want.

Fit the 15mm spacers and bolts I bought for the LPT but never got round to fitting as I feel the saloon's rear wheels always look a bit lost in the arches compared to the estates for some reason but this should fix that :)

Anyway here are a couple of pictures but I will try and get some better ones soon.

Oh yes and if anyone could confirm whether this car takes 280mm or 302mm disks that would be great :)

Good bit of info that there James. I think I read that once when I was trying to get some specs on the S70R's as there's not that much info on them.

Kingford, she certainly does! Really happy with it.

Found a couple of your receipts/stamps in the history. Did you carry out any of the modifications?

Thanks guys :)

I managed to get round to fitting the rear spacers which has filled the arches out nicely. Also decided to take the car for a Sunday drive which included a detour through Hindhead tunnel. It's been a while since I have just wanted to drive the car just to enjoy it, back when I had my frankenstein 205 diesel but I was always in fear of it breaking down. But this car is a great compromise of comfort power and great handling.

Anyway here's some pictures from Saturday morning when the sun was out and the car was marginally clean-

You need a nicer headlights mate to finish it off

MaxTS
Monday 23rd February 2015, 11:18
I was thinking that but the current ones are aftermarket ones which are half way between the original type and the C70 crystal type but you may know this already as you probably fitted them. I personally think they look great as the crystal types seem a bit too "blingy" esp on a Saffron but having said that, ones of the lenses does have a hole from a stone chip so that will need sorting.

Get some HID's in there, makes a big difference.

Get some HID's in there, makes a big difference.

It has got hid in the dipped beam.

The main beam on the aftermarket projectors is notoriously poor, the reflector design is obviously not great..

The late c70 crystal lamps are meant to be good but they're not cheap.

I got half way through converting a standard set of headlights to bi xenon, I should probably finish the other one......

Hound
Monday 23rd February 2015, 19:38
I've just given up looking for second-hand crystals/jewels for my C70 and had decided the black projectors were the best alternative.

Not so sure now if the main beam is as bad as Yosser says! :slap:

Yosser
Monday 23rd February 2015, 19:45
TBH I found that the hid dipped beam was good enough for my needs and that the high beam wasn't a big issue.

It could definitely be better though, hence why I was fiddling about trying to convert another set to bi xenon.

Hound
Monday 23rd February 2015, 20:40
Thanks - think it's gonna be projectors with HID then. Even projectors with standard halogens must be better on dip than the original lights!

jamesy12345
Monday 23rd February 2015, 20:40
I just went for a blast out to drop a family member off a couple of villages away.....hi beam not too bad...but not really strong - you can still see the pattern of the dipped beam on the road. Kept my speed down a little on our crappy unlit roads.

Thanks for the confirmation.

Does anyone know if there is a bushing kit or something along those lines to reduce slack in the gear lever? It definitely feels like it is coming from the lever mounting itself and not further along the set up.

yes there are 2 rubber bushes that attatch to pins on the gear selector ontop of the Gearbox, some bush have bushed these out using brass insert/spacers

I'll get some ordered, thanks.

So since owning the car I've always known the front disks needed replacing so I finally got round to that this morning, everything came off nicely which is always a good sign when first working on a new to yourself car.

I also bought a fairly decent breathable multi layer outdoor cover to protect it from the street, can only hope it doesn't get nicked but I'm thinking of tying a know in the straps and padlock them together as a deterrent (hopefully).

Pictures later :)

I do miss my saffy & seeing hounds c70 today it brought back fond memories.

Totally agree, I mean at what point would the "stereotypical" Volvo drive- a grandad buy an orange saloon with 250BHP. I think pretty much all of the S70R's are on the forums and not parked up in a quiet colder-sack begging for some boost.

Just got back from Santa Pod and decided to take it up the strip but only ended up being just the once due to the weather.
I managed a 14.92 @93mph with a slow start and short shifting 1st and 2nd. bearing in mind this was my first ever time down the strip and actually launching the car I am pretty pleased with the time. Oh and I had a passenger :)

The car broke down on the way home due to a radged up boost gauge light (not fine by me) causing it to short and blew the light switch fuses and immobilized the car, didnt realise what it was till the RAC guy came.

Plans are to make up a 2.75 intake and replace the TRE shortly.

Thanks :) I was very close to my mates, Audi S4 and Mk5 R32 (with launch control) so I'm very pleased considering I had to do that with no aids or 4wd.

I ordered an upper Powerflex mount and some bearing type gear selector bushes ands both turned up yesterday.
I put on the great bushes as soon as I got home and for £10 it makes a really nice difference and positive gear select.
Also my GF's brother had some spare time during his tech lessons so he make me a wood gear knob with a brass collar and it looks great!

Been awhile since an update.

Not a lot has happened really, has an issue with an oil line blowing off so that's now fixed with genuine parts and fresh oil. Will be giving it another oil change soon so this one is just a "flush" so to speak.
I've started to use my girlfriends Micra as a daily to work which halves my fuel and satisfies my guilt for using the R as a daily although I absolutely love driving it. So she stay's under a breathable soft cover (only put on if the car is clean) and get's taken out at the weekends :)

Update-

I had a friend selling a Forge type BOV valve so thought I'd give it a try as it was only using a blank and I'm actually quite liking it due to the hard spring is still gives off chatter if you are quick with the throttle.

On Saturday I replaced over the track rod ends as one had a huge amount of play and replaced the coolant. I love how they are self bleeding! Also got the tracking done at a local garage for peace of mind, first trip to a garage in 4 years apart from MOT's.

I was planning to buy some B6's but funds have changed so that may not happen for awhile now so I'm just keeping on top of servicing and enjoying the thing for now :)

Also forgot to mention I had replaced the oil last week with fully synth and a genuine filter
