not alot to say. Its a gst 2.4t. Previous owner had for 10 years. Seems to have all the toys in it. Daul climate etc. Got it for £965.. including the coil pack that failed on the first day it came home.. on Exactly 103000. Strange huh? Anyway, glad to be back. And any info of these would be greatly appreciated left here modifications wise :)

Both. Im going to look at the springs as these seem to be the common option. But mainly want the performance out the way personally. Remaps seem straight forward. Any insight to exhaust, remap companies, Intake side intercoolers etc

Ive been doing abit of shopping around the past couple nights and came across an obx full exhaust for $400-£258. Any advice on the obx systems? I've got a small list of toys I want. Any tips on brands would be great. I dont want the expensive stuff, but definately the wel known affordabld brands. Not cheap crap.

Exhaust systems
Intercooles/piping
air filter setup/location
Inlet manifold
upgrading cooling system
brembo brake discs
platinum spark plugs
back box delete with 3in replacement

just struggling to source parts so calling to the hills
I know to contact don for the mte map, but I want this lot ready before mapping. Am I best of on having a complete straight threw (or sports cat) or get a rear box?

For aftermarket radiator and intercooler, I went for do88 from parts for Volvo, not cheap but good quality.

For spark plugs I went for NGK Iridium BKR8EIX on Wobbly Dave's advice.
I've got a K&N cone filter where the airbox normally lives.
I managed to pick up a used Ferrita exhaust, and downpipe with 200 cell cat, worth keeping an eye on the forums to see what's about.
Not sure if there's much you can do in regards to the inlet manifold, but a japanifold, or a S60R exhaust manifold would be an improvement.

Information worth while. Ive shopped about on here but not much c70 bits performance wise. What did the Intercooler set you back at? The exhaust and filter is priority I think as there the main restrictive parts readily and easily available. Ferritta was the option for the t4. Are these cheapbay 150cell cats actually worth the buy? Mot nov so not bothered if needs switching. She neess the plugs soon so I may follow your suggestion. Thanks mate

Get some provacy hopefully tomorrkw if tint turns up as well

Got a quote on a cat back with a silencer for £250 @ 2.5 inch. What is the best size? I was thinking just go al out with a 2.75-3 incj straight threw. Thoughts and opinions on this?

I've not had any experience with the ebay sports cats, so couldn't tell you. If you want a bit more induction/turbo noise, remove the under bonnet insulation. ;)

Small update. I got some sheet metal today to make a "homemade" heat shield. Itll only be a small cover to keep engine heat away, £6 for a sheet from wickes. Ill start it tomorrow and upload the progress. Itl only be a two piece component riveted. As long as heat is away from the air filter... im happy

I'm pretty sure that the only difference between the LHD and RHD headlights is the shutter - I wonder if it would be easy to duplicate, if we had one from a RHD light in order to make a template?

The shutter has an adjustment to make them useable when driving on the "other side" of the road, but is not a full conversion. Pics below are LHD version. I assume a UK type would be mirror-imaged.

is that a set of the actual aftermarket lights? If so. What stopping you insert the direction aim plate 180 degrees?

s40t
Thursday 12th March 2015, 18:26
That surely is the only thing stopping is using them? Even if you got some sheet metal and fabricated up some new aim plates... I have sheet metal left over.. I have an idea, potentially expensive loss one lol.. but its an idea

Dangerous Dave
Thursday 12th March 2015, 18:38
All you'd need to do is bend those plates back to the other side and refit to the headlight and the pattern should be flipped. Probably would need to re-aim the units though

Just mark the shape of the arc on some card and match it when you bend the plates

Or you could go for the DOT cutoff which is flat

Yes, they are photos of the dismantled light from a US Volvo site, where they were adapting it for HID use. The cutoff shutter is curved inwards, as well as tapered, and I bet it would snap if you tried bending it!

Without seeing a UK-spec version, I'm guessing we want this:

28367

instead of this:

28368

Dangerous Dave
Thursday 12th March 2015, 19:15
I don't think it would snap, it wouldn't be a hard metal, just a cheap bit of sheet metal.

Like you say, there is no harm in making a copy out of some sheet offcuts. Maybe bend the original plate back flat and taking a card copy just in case

Thats what I was working on when I last touched the project (over three years ago, unfortunately the engine died so currently building a new one).

I was trying to deflute the lenses. Some have got the plastic lenses to make it easier to deflute. But I dont like plastic lenses, I think I've found a supplier for clear glass ones hopefully.

It didn't occur to me that you would only de-flute the glass in a circle in front of the projector!

What type of filter is it, if it's an oiled cone filter, then oil may have contaminated the MAF sensor inside the housing, try giving it a clean with MAF cleaner, but be careful, they're very fragile, just squirt the cleaner on, and leave to dry.

Sorry, missed this one earlier, sounds like the oneway valve in the servo line is kaput, so the engine's sucking in unmetered air from the servo.

When the vvt unit packed up on our R, it didn't affect running much, just felt hesitant above 4,500 revs, what with code the car threw the other day, it does sound like it's MAF related.

Thanks for both replies. Its only done it that once, but it should still rev when brake it pressed :S but if the maf is on its last legs then it guess its plausible. .. would a duff camshaft sensor caus a maf code to come up any chance? Ive noticed that my old vvt solenoid is actually running the car better as stated, dump valve is opening alot better, less induction noise and no back fires.. must be a dodgey camshaft sensor surely? I only get a reading from pins 1 and 3 and thats up to 192.0 for a split second. Are this the correct pins and is this right? Why did you think you had a problem with the VVT in the first place?

Fault code p1332 came up... I reckon the camshaft sensor is on the way out for this reason, could be throwing that code up because its not functioning properly, vice versa hence the new solenoid as this code came up in the past not the one shown earlier

Which 8000k HIDs did you get? They are surprisingly non-blue. I'm looking at these H7Rs (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/301024360286) for dipped beam. I think I might get 3400k for more light and a better match for the foglights (which I don't intend to change). I'm hoping there's no "lights out" on the dash too, since there's no CanBus.

Yeah I thought theye were more 6000k but there definately blue tinted at night. The fogs were only 16 quid yet had the best packaging. Ill upload a night pic. Debating on the projectors whether to part with the money now or Hold out to be on safe side...wait for the bills to go I guess.. but a k&n is ordered :)

I'm sure our friendly PFS rep will be here shortly to clarify!

As for the projectors, if you're happy with the quality of light from the HID retrofit, you may feel you don't need to spend all that extra money on projectors just yet.

I've always heard that HIDs (even the R-types) and reflector/fluted lenses weren't a great combination for a clear cut-off on dipped beam, with beam scatter from the fluted lenses (I'm assuming you bought H7Rs). I'd been considering Osram Nightbreaker Unlimiteds, which are halogens, but if you think the HIDs work in a standard light I may try the ones I linked to earlier.

Hiya, I bought the killen springs from PFS for my C70.........although they got it down, I would still preferred another inch especially at the back. But for the money I have had no problems with them.

I got another solenoid today. It boosted much better... then I think it realised somethings wrong. :/ got same outcome again as the other replacement. This leads me to think either camshaft or timings out a tooth. I get akot of popping when revving and backing off. I have NO runni issues with old part, so possibly vvt has packed up and timings out? Bugging me now >:/

An update on the car. I had a volvo specialist come and time it in a bid for it working but nothing so head is coming off.i want to try and take the opportunity to get another turbo in place. I was thinking the obvious spoken about t5, but what else will be a straight swap, if any and codes?? I did debate the t4 turbo but is the. 5 a better option? Im not after silly power, anything around the turbo output of t5 or possibly more which will give me good returns after a remapped ecu. is 330bhp a realistic gain which t5 turbo injectors relapsed valves and a decent induction side with maybe future intercooler? Cars going to off the road for a couple months to get the mapping money there but I will start the head next week on my holidays from work... sad times :(

Update:

I FINALLY got my act together with pay day round the corner and got on with head removal. I only spent shy over an hour on it and got all bar exhaust manifold off. Ill carry on with this tomorrow.

a couple parts were already loose like top mount but this soon turned my footwell Into a volvo breakers yard. All was good clean and easy. I split a couple pipe ends but I can easily replace these (breather pipes mainly under inlet)

http://i.imgur.com/rvwwx2o.jpg

the turbo heat shield I readaot on this as it was a PITA to acess one bolt. Im pleased so say after getting the correct size spanner ( :p ) and so lube it came off a breeze, quuck pushed left and upward angle pull and the heatshield slid straight out! chuffed to bits! Heres a little picture to role the time over... inlet looked nice a clean, some oil ripples not drops in intake pipe, but im now considering on just going ahead with the turbo swap whislt access is easy. The cars off road anyway so as long as it start up and revs ok, im happy. :) any ideas on what the clutch can take? Id aim for 320bhp which I hopes doable with this turbo and remap installed and couple other supporting mods. Im aiming to put the t5 turbo on, I did ponder the idea of a cartridge change to a slight bigger one than t5s but is this overboard? Thanks guys! :)

Ive finally had time to get the head off. The first obvious check was pistons. I was expecting to see some little nicks on exhaust side. But its the inlet side that was hit. My verdict is timing was out all along effectively advanced but it couldnt retard the timing enough, hence the cvvt fault and camshaft sensor fault. The valve are bent by the absolute minimal possible, enough to loose compression though on turn over. Did see one set of exhaust valves were abit worse to others, almost looking like metal flaking off. Anyway Heres some pictures

And finally this

I just need to wrap centre piece and itll be done. All will be put together gradually and once its hopefully done ill be getting the exhaust made and then remapped. Im hoping for the magic 300bhp but will see! Turbo and injectors are from a 1998 t5 which looks like its a different fuel rail. But ill have a closer inspection upon fitment

Looks good, but you'll struggle to get 300bhp with a 15g, you really need a 18T.

I'm interested to see what gains you get from the 2.4. Although to be honest you'd be punching to get over 300BHP from a 15G

Ill have a few supporting mods. Injectors. Air filter. Heat shield. Exhaust. And the turbo, in theory is now actually a 15t as mine is a 13t so itll have a better air flow threw the exhaust housing than the g spec. When the nap is done ill get a pribt out. Im interested to see after the mixed views ive been getting a

Nice thread & interesting build, both inside & out!

+1 to what others have said though With regards the turbo. You may against all odds get 300bhp from the 15g but you'll be working it so hard it'll last about 5 mins. Get a 16t or even better an 18t which you won't have to pushbas hard, although the 18t is the preference as 300 for a 16t is still a stretch even with all the support mods.

Good luck & watching with interest. Cheers, Morgan

Cars now running. Have a monster of a oil leak which will be sorted. Boost is all over the place at the moment but for obvious reasons. Injectors are off due to two coilpacks going within an hour. And heres some pics to keep you going... not that a toss is given because its not an R or T Model... minus the couple looking around thanks guys ;)
