hi guys, well I have a 2002 v70 d5, recently ran out of fuel after that was experiencing limp mode, so changed the fuel filter problem solved, started first time drove fine no issues, a day or so later failed to start, now checked all the usual suspects,

fuel filter good
in tank pump all good
injectors leak back test very good

one tiny squirt of easy start and she runs like a dream, no smoke, not under powered no fault codes displaying, double check fuel filter to make sure.

Battery is couple of months old.

After a bit further investigation no fuel is getting to the rail?? had it to a Volvo specialist he cant figure it out either, obviously don't want to keep using easy start I know the affects this can cause. Volvo specialist has ruled out fuel filter, in tank pump, injectors and high pressure pump, they dismissed the high pressure pump as in 20yrs they have never had to replace one before and they are known never to fail??

any ideas guys? thanks in advance

Check your glow plugs!

Amp clamp on the earth cable at the battery (everything switched off) then switch on ignition. You should get 75-100 amps draw on the earth.

Other than that, it will be throttle contamination or EGR valve sticking. That's it.

If it starts on easy start then it rules out fuel issue.

ok thanks, just another quick one why would there be no fuel in the rail whilst cranking or before and after cranking? could any of these things to try you have said be a cause for symptoms such as those? thanks

There is an electric pump in the tank. Therefore, when you switch on the ignition or crank, the fuel is fed (very quickly) to the common rail. Once at around 260-280bar the injectors will switch and the car will start. If that pressure is not met then the injectors will not switch and the car will not start.
You need to check the 'one way' valves in your fuel lines (if fitted) are not leaking internally allowing fuel to drain back to tank.
You could also have a small leak, normally around the filter housing. This will allow air in and allow the fuel to drain to tank.
You can check fuel pressure using live data on most good quality diagnostics or if you have VIDA.
