Hi guys, Im posting this on behalf of my father who has a 1999 V70 T5.

He bought the car brand new in 98-99 and the car has been faultless until he decided to lpg it about 5 years ago, running problems etc. It turned out that the guys who fitted the lpg had fitted the lpg ecu in the same box as the cars ecu, and by doing this somehow dislodged the cars ecu resulting in it overheating and frying the connecting pins. they took out the lpg in the end. A replacement ecu was ordered and the car has been fine ever since, 3-4 years driving. until now!

He's complaining that sometimes when you drive the car, stop somewhere, jump back in and want to go again, the car wont start, ignition on, all dash lights go on and off as they should, it turns over but wont fire. Sometimes no lights come on the dash, then he leaves the car for 10-20 mins, and poof! it works fine again! its truly a mystery.

We've had a auto electrician look at her, he's had the car for the past month and has gone through everything he can think of. Fuel pumps, fuses, bad earths, crank sensors, maf's, and a load of other checks i cant remember. No faults/codes come up on his computer.

Can anyone on here suggest anything else that maybe the auto leccy guy missed? What are the chances of the replacement ECU being faulty after 3-4 years of faultless driving?

As you can imagine, the car holds a great sentimental value to him and the last thing he wants to do is have to sell it as a spares/repairs. But we are running out of options/ideas on what is wrong and how to fix it :(

Seems unlikely to be the ECU....sounds like a hot start problem. It would be worth getting the codes read - could be something like coil or coolant temp sensor

edit

sorry just noticed you mentioned codes read already...what software did they use - VOL-FCR is good, will work if the car is M4.4

Starter Solenoid

Can you hear the Starter motor clicking? try hitting it with a hammer or similiar if you can get to it.

It will be ME7 being a '99. did Vida show anything?

Ill ask the auto leccy if he's investigated these items. The starter works fine im sure, its not the tell tale click of a busted starter

Does the engine just turn over without firing or does it fire for a brief second then cut out?

Sometimes it will turn over without firing!

other times it will fire up straight away and runs perfectly with no coughs, smoke or splutters.

Other times you can put the key in the ignition, turn the key and nothing will happen, as if the battery was completely dead or not there (its a brand new battery before someone suggests a new battery :) ) Although this happens very rarely.

Could it be related to the actual ignition barrel/switch?

Could it be related to the actual ignition barrel/switch?

Never thought of that tbh, i'll put it to the auto electrician to test it if possible

crankshaft sensor was one of the first things he checked and turned out to be fine

It probably is the bottom half of the ignition switch...was £64 for my `97 V70 T5....common fault.

Yeah my p1 v70 had a dodgy ignition switch just used to spin sometimes.

The auto leccy thinks it might be down to either the fuel pump or relay. Looking to order one of each to see if it solves the problem. Volvo wanted £284 + vat for the pump and £33.20 + vat for the relay.... which i thought was a tad expensive.

Euro car parts has bosch pumps for about £130 - but which one is the one i need?? http://www.eurocarparts.com/fuel-pump
