I need a capacitor for a big air compressor I have acquired. A quick google comes up with 'Start' or 'Run' types, different voltages and capacitance ratings. I am lost!
Anyone point me in the right direction?

Cheers

Paul

Gis a clue what model is the compressor

http://inspectapedia.com/electric/Starting_Capacitors.php

Daft question but can't you just look at the old one(s) and replace like-for-like?

There was not one in there. Wish there was. Would have been nice and easy!!

Why don't you just phone the manufacturers and ask them.

Have emailed and phoned but no joy. The only people I can get a response from seem to be younger than the machine and aint got a clue. Was hoping someone here would know, as I am struggling

I doubt your get a response from the motor manufacturer.

The capacitor thats failed has it got anything written on the outside ?

Here's a link to Brook Compton brochure, there are starting capacitor sizes for similar motors in there (assuming it's a CSIR motor) but probably better to give them a shout - contact details on the last page

I've read the thread again and noticed that the csps are missing.

If you get the capacitors wrong the motor will eithet not run or burnout.

I'd take the motor off and take it to a company I've used to use called ERIKS they have branches throughout the country.

LOL, she is a beast. I bought a little 50 litre Clarke compressor off ebay and about a week later a mate said he had this one that he needed gone ASAP. So I got it for free!! He could have told me a week earlier!

I have had it running. I just have to give the flywheel a spin by hand when I turn it on to give the motor a helping hand.

OK fella

if you can't get anything out of them try this company:

http://www.capacitor-sales.co.uk/start_capacitors.html

They will probably need to see the motor nameplate to help you out & maybe some details of the space where the capacitor should go - spade or pole connectors, housing etc

Here's my set up originally it came with a 60uf but it did stall on occasions when pressure was in the tank so I added another 25uf in line which sorted the stalling.
With yours being a 1.1kw motor ide try a 50uf capacitor unless you can get in touch with one of the company above and get the exact one for the motor

1.1kw.
Am I just a bit dim, or is that a bit small for what looks like a 150l tank?

How many cu.ft/min is that going to push?

Perhaps it's in the gearing?

Example, my Clarke 2.5hp compressor will only push about 9cu.ft/min and it soon runs out of puff when using big air tools, although it is direct drive.

I did pick up another identical one though, so I'm going to run them in tandem.
18 cu.ft/min, that'll do nicely :)
Just need to beef up the supply to the man cave. When they both kick in, they draw over 20 amps!

Right. Got hold of a nice chap at Brook Crompton. He was amazed that I had a motor as old as this still going!! Anyway, I need a 100uf 275 volt start cap. So cheers for that link James and thanks to all who helped. Yeah, I thought 1.1kw was a bit small, but it ran OK and I aint gonna be doing any heavy duty stuff, so should be OK hopefully.

100 uf is what it says in that Brook Crompton link, for a 90 frame...but much better to let the experts confirm than frying it by Google Engineering

Cheers, glad you are sorted
