Started the car today after about 10 days since I last used it, reversed out of the drive, put into DRIVE (D) and it sounded as though I was seriously slipping a clutch, tried reverse again and loads of power. Put back into D and again same problem.
I drove off and its as though its stuck in winter mode but even when up to 50mph was gutless.
Drove 20 miles and after a fuel fill it was almost normal except for initial pull away.
The orange arrow on the dash was continuosly flashing together with the economy/sport switch light.
Its still not quite right and those lights are now irritating.

Any help extremely welcome but it must be a simple cheap fix! haha

Forgot to say its not the oil/atf. I changed that 6 weeks ago and its still nice and red, no smell and up to max mark.

Looks like the cold air is eating gearboxes........

You don't have a clutch in an automatic......
Was quoted £1500 for new auto gearbox from Volvo...until they realised mine was manual....

Calling Dave...where are you Dave.....???

That quote is more than the car cost or is worth! help!

The clutch bit was just a "sounds like" comment.

Her indoors thought the oil may have frozen!! :slap:

I was only thinking the other day what a lovely reliable car I have.

Sounds as if you need to get the codes read. That flashing arrow means a fault has been logged.

Cheers..I think my Haynes has a list of fault codes and how to check them, I'll give it a go tomorrow. No doubt it won't be as straightforward as it should be!

I'll be back....

Diagnosing auto box problems by post is almost impossible to get right the easy way is codes or pressure tests and it normally costs as you can tell from other posts, however for what its worth a cheap fault could be your S1 (solenoid) has a bad connection so check this out, if this unit fails it shuts down 1st & 2nd gear and increases fluid pressure which will give harsh shifts or engagement from any position i.e. Neutral to reverse. Your initial diagnosis of feels like a slipping clutch is correct the box has clutch packs similar to a motorcycle or mechanical LSD. Good luck.

I've checked the fault codes with Haynes and the only code was one mentioning loose connection on gear selector.
I reset the codes tried the car and all (so far) seems okay.
Positive temperature today so as the car was not used for a week and it had been freezing I expect a dodgy connection became brittle.

Thanks all for your suggestions.

You need your codes read, a fault has been logged - go read them/get them read! Thats what the OBD is there for!

Thanks for the quick reply ! I just spoke with a guy who does all of my engine management work ( I'm a mobile mechanic ) and he reckons that its not possible to read to codes for the auto box via the obdII terminal . Is this right or is he talkin lobbocks ???!!!!????
Does anyone know of a independant Volvo specialist near me ...... I'm in Sunderland , Tyne and Wear . KORR....... its foggy up 'ere !!!

OBDII

I'm sure you can read the autobox codes from that, otherwise I'm not sure where you could?!

Anyone?

HI mate, had a similar problem not long ago, flashing arrow on dash, didnt have the pull away probs thou, i looked on interweb and found a quick fix.. as below,

Hello, The most common cause for this concern is a Gear position sensor. The Gear position sensor sits under linkage lever on the transmission. It lets the TCM (Transmission Control Module) know which gear the transmission is in. The reason the light is blinking is because you have a code stored in your TCM and that is how it alerts the driver that something is wrong. The gear position sensor is terribly hard to change but some items are required to be removed to gain access to the sensor. If you look out under the hood and see the transmission shift cable where it attaches to the transmission the component directly under the shift lever is the component I'm speaking of. I have seen the actual Winter/Normal mode switch go bad and set a code as well. Especially if there has ever been a drink spilled on that switch before. You'll need an advanced type scanner to get into the data stream of the TCM. a regular OBD II type scanner usually won't be able to read TCM codes. Here's something you can try to see if it will reset. Disconnect the battery for 10 minutes. While the battery is disconnected you can try to "clean" the Gear position switch contacts by moving the shifter from P to L rapidly about 20 to 30 times. This movement will sometimes clean off any corrosion in the switches contacts, you will most likely have to replace the PNP switch eventually even if this does work for a while.
