Well had a hour or so after work before it got dark to give her a quick once over.

Managed to change the N/S rear wheel as the tyre was ££££ed as it`s been flat for ages.

Went around seeing how bad the rust is, apart from the hole in the N/S rear seal and a few small holes in the spare wheel well the rest of the rust "looks" like it`s only surface rust.

The paint is flat and I`m going to keep that way, I`m going for the tatty but mechanical sound look :)

The engine oil looks ok and the engine turned over by hand,

I`ve spent 4 hours trying to start the car,

I`ve stripped and cleaned the carb as the floats had stuck to the bottom of the float chamber.

Removed and cleaned/gapped all the plugs.

Cleaned the dizzy cap and rotor arm.

She tries to start but only on cylinders 1 and 2, I`ve got a spark on 3 when the plug is sat on the engine, but I`ve got no spark on 4.

I`ve checked the all plugs and have a spark when the plug is sat on the rocker cover when using plug lead number 1

I think the HT leads are fubar`d so I`ll get some new ones and fingers crossed.

Now do I get these,

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Kerr-Nelson-Ignition-HT-Lead-Set-OEF101-Ideal-Vehicle-Replacement-Fiat-Volvo-/281273217418?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Car+Make%3AVolvo%7CModel%3A240&hash=item417d30b18a

Well now it`s a battery I thought I would check the lights etc and the only thing that doesn`t work is a fog light bulb.

When fitted to the front the rim is "kissing" the suspension leg.

They was plenty of clearance on the rear :)

New leads arrived today and as I finished work a bit earlier I thought it would be rude not to fit them and see if she`ll start.

Well no she still won`t start, I`ve even flattened the new battery trying to start her.

I`ve got a spark on all 4 plugs and all the plugs are wet after trying to start it.

I think I need to do a compression test.

It tries to fire on cylinders 1 & 2 but not on 3 & 4

When I removed the plugs from 1 & 2 they where black, so it could be running rich.

This could be why it`s not firing on 3 & 4 (fuel putting out spark)

As for sensors  it`s got points and a condensor :)

bit of brake cleaner or easy start in the carb, while cranking?
you got fuel to carb? filters get blocked over time and tank insides pell off, blocking fuel pipe..
these are simple as. fuel, spark..and of you go.

oblark
Tuesday 25th November 2014, 23:37
I'm using a jerry can on the roof at the moment as I've got no idea what the inside of the tank is like.

I've got fuel to the pump then to the carb and then on the plugs. I've got a spark on all plugs so in theory it should start but it wont.

It's either got low compression on 3 & 4 or its being flooded by the carb.

Might help ...might not....

But on the inner wing nearside at the front there is a Bosch Control Unit and on the 740 this is a Powerstage unit and if the screw does not earth because it`s rusty...no start or run...or bad misfires.

Because your 240 is distributor etc. it may not be a cause but worth checking!

Had this trouble with both my 740`s...

Even just tipping new petrol in the carb aperture it should still fire and run if only for seconds!

After another 2 hours this afternoon I`ve finally got it started.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHQcnGVbVlE

When it first started all you could here was the sound of drive belts slipping and you could smell burning rubber.

Once they stopped slipping all I could hear was the baffles rattling in the exhaust.

I let it run until it warmed up and had to adjust the slow running, it idles nice no funny noises or smoke :)

Had a great start this morning, first job fit new head light bulb to V50, brought new bulb from Moral World, fitted bulb and went to test the bulb and the piece of Ford cr@p would start !!!!! Phoned Steve who very kindly poped over with Vida and read the fault codes all 40+ of them :yikes: the last 3 codes where to do with a ECM communication problem, cleared the codes and still wouldn`t start, It turned over but wouldn`t fire but after a few minutes of trying to start you could smell petrol. So I cranked it over with my foot flat on the floor and it fired up. I`ve been starting it all afternoon and it`s been ok, Bloody Ford £$%&

Once the V50 was sorted I cracked on with welding up the spare wheel well.

Had a go at trying to get the fuel sender out, It was covered in rust and £$%&, cleaned it off and it came out no problems. Result.
The sender is £$%&ed which isn`t a problem as I`m fitting a injestion sender.
Inside the tank I was inspecting to find some the same sludge as I found in the carb but no there was about 3 inches of 10+ year petrol which needs to be removed or mixed with some fresh petrol.

I`ve been doing some research in to the 240 injection fuel pump set up.

The 240 uses a in tank pump then another pump under the rear seats to pump the fuel to the injector rail @ 3bar.

Trying to get hold of a external fuel pump and cradle is like looking rocking horse cr@p.

So I`m going to go down the route of fitting a 850 fuel pump in the tank which will pump the fuel to the injector rail @ 3bar so no need for the external pump, I`ll put the fuel filter in the engine bay where it can be got at easily.

The only problem with the 850 fuel pump it is fatter than the 240 one so it`ll be a bit of a squeeze to get it the tank.

As she is a early 80's model the speedo is driven off of the gearbox, but the 940 gets it speedo drive from the back axle. So to fit a 940 engine and box I'd have to also fit a late 240 axle and instruments. This could be a right can of worms that I dont to open.

I'm not looking to get massive amounts of bhp (150ish) out of it so I'm going to tune the B21A engine by fitting twin webers 45 DCOE`s and a tubular exhaust.
After spendings hours of searching I`ve found a place in Germany that make tubular manifolds for £220, The bit that`s really going to sting are the carbs £250 EA + manifold £200 and linkage £80 but it`s all old skool bolt on.

I`ve also been looking into high flow heads and high lift cams, the head to get is the 100405 with its cam. So I`ll be on the look at later for that head in the breakers. The plan is to get the car on the road for the summer. (All going well)

The old shocks are in good order for oil shocks, no signs of any leakage so if anyone some 240 shocks (age unknown) let me no :)

It appears that parcel force drivers can`t read. I left a note on the front door for all signed for deliveries to be left with neighbours. Royal mail driver left a parcel with a neighbour but parcel force didn`t. So I`ve made a the sign bigger so hopefully the idiot will see it tomorrow when he tries to deliver my parcel.

After I relaised I`d ££££ed up and brought the wrong head from the breakers.

I started to do a bit of body work, treated the wheel ache with some Kurust then a thin coat of filler, rubed it down and primed with etch primer. Just nneds a fatting back with some wet & dry then it`ll be ready for the satin lacquer.

I thought I`d make a start on changing the front springs, after 2 hours still hadn`t managed to get the old spring off the car as I wasn`t perpared to undo the brake pipes that feed the caliper. But after a short break and a coffee the old spring was removed and the lowering spring was fitted.

When comparing the old and new springs it looks like these lowering spring will do the job.

http://i1067.photobucket.com/albums/u433/oblark/Project%20240/20141221_111846.jpg (http://s1067.photobucket.com/user/oblark/media/Project%20240/20141221_111846.jpg.html)

The cars ride hieght was measured before I started and once the lowering springs have been fitted. Well the -40mm lowering springs lowered the car 15mm :slap: So the springs where removed and 1/2 a turn was cut off the spring. I`ll let the suspension settle but i`ll mite take another 1/2 turn off the spring.

After the ££££ up over the 631 head I`ve been looking into the 531 heads and have found that it will fit the B21A
The only head that flows the same as the 531 is the 405 head, this was fitted to the B21E engine. You try finding a later 240 in the breakers around here !!!

So after asking if anyone had a 405 head on the 240 owners club faceache page. I`ve got my hands on a 405 head, just needs overhauling as it`s been stored for a while.

Then it was on with the cutting the rust out and replacing it. Another weekend another hole :) but this one went up the rear wing more. The sides of the wing was replaced before the boot well could be fitted. Once all welded in all the seams where seam sealed (hides some pigeon ££££ welds :)) then a good covering with underseal.

Todays job, low the ET (offset) from 44 to a minium of 32.

First job was to take a measurement of a unmolested wheel from where it bolts on to the hub to the back of the rim (+straight edge)

All the welds on the back of the wheel where cut with thin cutting disc, once the welds have be cut the centre was removed. It was £$%&in tight, it took me with a lump and a cold chiesel an hour to remove the centre. The remains of the welds on the rim was ground back and the centre was cleaned up.

Once all cleaned up the centre was refitted and yes it was tight going back in :) once in a measurement was taken the same as at the start but 20mm less. So I`ve now got at a ET of 24 :) the other wheel had the same done to it. When the wheels where put on the car and spun the run out was 0.7mm (from what I`ve found on net is anything less than 1.0mm is OK) but I`ve trued mine up so the run out is only 0.3mm (which is the same as a new wheel)

Once trued up the centres where welded, to stop the wheel from distorting it was welded on opposite sides. The next thing to do is to paint the wheels. I`m thinking along the lines of matt black centres with dark silver rims.

Not for a month or two.

As I'm converting a N/A which had its speedo drive from the gearbox and the B230FK has a electronic speedo drive in the rear axle which the ecu uses to adjust the idle.

If i tried to start it without the electronic speedo it run rough and I wouldn't be able to stop the engine.

The Timming belt and drive belts finally arrived from euro car parts but the drive belts are twice the length they should be. Phoned them up and was told they where the right ones according to they records. So after measuring the old belts (10AX0888) I found the right ones but they are from a 83 vauxhall cavalier but as long as they fit who cares :)

Had to go to the Portsmouth branch of euro car parts to collect the right alternator belts.

While in the aera dropped in to see Steve and went down to Harris`s the breakers to see if they had a 940 lpt in as I could do with the radiator as mine leaks.
But managed to pick a 012 maf from a ferrari f355 which is a straight swap for the standard 940 maf.

Mounted both ecu`s to some 3mm aluminiun plate then fitted the injection ecu to the passengers side dash under the glove box. The ignition ecu was mounted to the dash by the steering column.

Once the both ecu`s where donnected I fitted a 12v bulb to each of the fuel pump supply wires. When nthe ignition was turned on both bulbs came on for a few seconds then went off, when the engine was cranked over both bulbs came back on. So it looks good for the fuel side of things just need to check the ignition side next.

After the Portmouth meet yesterday we went to the local breakers as they have got in a early 960, 940 lpt and a 16v 740

The engine & box had been removed from the left hand drive 16v 740.

I manged to get the rad out of the 940 lpt and the rad temp switch from the 960

I got a radiator fan from a guy on VOC but it didn`t come with the shroud, I did a bit of research and found that the 940/960 shroud only fits the 560mm radiator and I have the 450mm radiator. So using the 940 viscous fan shroud and some aluminium brackets I got the fan to fit the shroud.

As the 940 uses the same fan relay as the 850 I had a spare one, It was just a case of wiring in the relay, fan, temp sensor and the ecu supply.

As the fuel system was primed it would a shame not to try and start the engine, well it didn`t.

I`ve got a spark but the plugs where bone dry after 2-3 minutes of cranking, looks like the ecu has a immobilizer, lucky I`ve a second ecu so I`ll try again tomorrow.

So today`s job was to remove the old axle ready for the early GLT axle with speedo sensor to go in.

Before the axle came out I mocked up the GLT prop to confirm that it needs to be lengthened by 50mm.

To make the axle easier to handle I removed the half shafts, brgs and seals looked to be in very good condition, this is handy as they are needed for the GLT axle. The handbrake shoes look like have been changed as there is plenty of material left on the shoes. I`ll be fitting new discs and pads when it all goes back together.

The plan for this weekend was to fit the axle so I could have a working speedo.

BUT parcels2go and my yodel had other ideas.

The diff was dispatched on the 8-4-15 on a 24hr delivery service. The courier "ran out of time" so my parcel was returned to the depot at 18:00 on the 9-4-15

Due to the fact the courier “ran out of time” it doesn`t count as a failed delivery so I can`t reschedule the delivery or change the delivery address. So my parcel has now been at the yodel depot since 18:00 on the 9-4-15 which is long than it took to come down from north wales.

Now the idiots are saying it MITE be delivered on 13-4-15 Mite be !!!!!! it £$%&in better be.

Of all the couriers I`ve dealt with through sending and receiving things parcels2go and my yodel are the most useless bunch of brain dead wan£ers.

The axle is back in the car all painted up, as the cover is aluminium so it got polished, The suspension was loaded so all the suspension bolts could be torqued up to the correct settings.

The stainless Magnaflow double offset silencer arrived in the post this this week along with a couple of stainless 90 degree bends, there shouuld of been a couple of 45 degree bends but I was let down by a well known ebay company. The silencer was positioned on a axle stand to comfirm it was in the right place, it misses the diff by 25mm :)
The two 90 degree bends then where offered up to get the exhaust over the axle, I`ve put a flange between the bends so the exhaust can be removed. I started car up and was very surprised by how much the straight throu silencer reduced the exhaust note, on idle you it sounds like a standard exhaust but rev it and it has a nice throaty sound. The turbo makes some nice noises with the recir blanked off and running standard 940 lpt boost.

On today list of jobs, fit prop shaft, spray head buckets and fit clutch master.

The prop didn`t take long to fit so it was on to fitting the clutch master, now that was a differnt story. The master dosen`t have captive nuts in the bulkhead it uses good old fashon nuts and bolts which makes lif fun trying to hold the bolt in place to get the nut on. But got they in the end then it was on to bleeding it, that was a mixture of sucking the clutch fluid through the system then pumping it with the pedal. Once the clutch was bleed I discovered the bitting point was on the floor. So in to the man cave to make a longer push rod. (it`s only a temp measure until I can get some 8mm bar)

After sorting the stalling problem out it was on to the passenger door central locking fault.

The door wouldn`t lock with the central locking but if I locked the passenger door with the key then unlocked the car with drivers lock it would unlock. Took the door card off and sprayed the lock and linkage with WD40 and all sorted. The inside of the door card looked like fungs breeding ground, this due to the fact that the plastic liner had been removed from the door so out came the duck tape and a bin bag and 5 mins later door had be sealed.

I see what you mean about the clutch bearing pushrod, I've read about it when reading about the conversions, has to be extended quite a bit

Then this afternoon gave her a wash (first one in over 10 years) the paint work on the bonnet & roof is a bit rough, it was like sand paper and it can stay that way. Just wanted to wash the grim and tree sap off didn`t scrub to hard so moss is still growing in certain areas. Where the paint work has worn throu on the boot I`m just going to lacquer over it (it called character :))

Looking good, comparatively it's certainly less of a brute than the T5-R in the pictures, it's certainly going to surprise people.

When is the MOT? Will you be applying some light tuning? I suppose it doesn't need a cat with the age of the vehicle which is a nice bonus.

The marks are true provenance, or whatever the antique collectors call it.

The brute is my T5, the green bitch :)

Light tuning :) it`s already got the 3" maf & 2.5" stainless exhaust, after the MOT I`ll be fitting some ME7 blues and winding the boost up from 3 psi to 12 psi. Later on this year I`ll be fitting my 19T once I`ve rebuilt it.

I wish I had RWD again, there's going to be a lot of fun had post tuning!

Just a question, do these cars have a decent balance and weight distribution, or are they tail happy straight from the factory?

Poly engine and gearbox mounts from classic swede in the harder red poly. Well the engine is solid and I can now feel the engine running :)

Discovered the speedo doesn`t work so it`s one step forward and two steps back,

I`ve got a signal coming from the speed sender but no speedo. Not sure if it`s a wiring problem or a speedo fault I`ll do some checking tomorrow.

Did some more testing on the speedo and it`s f***ed, I`ve got a AC voltage that starts at 1v and climbs as the speed increases,

Tried a early speedo and that worked but at idle it recorded 40 mph so it`s a little bit out,

So I got bored and fitted these :)

I'm sure you'll come up with a good solution for the speedo, does that need to be operational for the forthcoming MOT?

PS - Not sure if you've had chance for progress on the M4.4 bin file mod for A/C operation, but drop me a PM when you know more.

I`ve got another speedo coming which will be with me by the weekend,

Also the fuel line should turn up by the weekend if it all falls into place the 240 will be MOT`d by the brooklands meet.

Sorted the insurance out tonight £240 full comp with a maxium of 3K miles and it will be insured from midnight tonight :)

I thought I'd do a quick update on this project.

Well the 240 is ripping up the tarmac with the boost set to 10 psi, then it developed a misfire so I've brought some oem leads which should fitted for the weekend. Once the misfire is sorted I'll fit my rebuilt 19T then later the big brake conversion.

Did that one fit through the letterbox Rob? :sorry:

I'm assuming the engine swapped 240 is well before OBDII and that must be something you can solder a chip into rather than just upgrade the software?

It was delivered by "my hermes" and left on the door step.

The remapped chips for these ecu's can be brought from ebay for about £30

I could buy the chips, the eprom loader from ebay and load the remapped files myself as I've got the files but it's easier to buy the chips.

kmb
Sunday 26th July 2015, 09:59
What level of adjustability does the changed chip give? Just interested in what parameters you'll have once fitted.

I've used My Hermes a couple of times and they do seem a bit less concerned with leaving parcels unattended, but the price is usually very good (not sure if you've seen they have recently halved their std cover from £100 to £50).

You haven't mentioned, unless I've missed it, what the handling is like in one of these old 240's, do they go around corners OK?

I've only ever been in one, it was the late 70's and my primary school headmaster was delivering me to hospital after a minor accident. Can't remember much about the trip

oblark
Sunday 26th July 2015, 11:23
The EZK chip just gives the car a bit more ignition advance to stop the engine "pinking" under high boost.

Your ecu is coming back to you by my hermes but will need a signature :)

As for the handling on the 240 its got very stiff suspebsion and goes around corners like it's on rails :)
