850 T5R ignition barrel comes out?

Hi

On this T5R that I am going to try and resurrect, the ignition barrel comes out of the column with the key in it. Why would this be? Worn connections or a damaged barrel?

The car has done stella miles though (300k+) so am expecting a whole host of issues but we'll start with this one.

if i remember right, to remove the barrel all you need to do is insert the key that push a screwdriver up underneath the steering column to release a tab. Perhaps the tab needs bending down a bit & not locking in
