Though it a good idea to start a thread for the Gul, to keep everything together that gets done on her in my ownership. I envisage her staying very much standard looking with a few hidden tweaks as we go along. The standard airbox has been refitted and contains a pipercross panel filter, which has reduced the loudness a bit, but still allows me to enjoy the turbo chatter (as the recirc was blanked when I bought her). In the coming week I hope to fit new suspension all round ( thanks Neal ) and repair/replace the alternator as it has stopped charging the battery, but the way things are going, it's looking like the engine will have to come out to change it, as the bolts are seized solid and access to them is all bar impossible. The Haynes book of lies makes it out to be a simple job and so it should be, but the truth is the complete opposite. I will manage some how as I need to get it running again for the Evo Run in a few days time.

If my memory is right they is only three bolts that hold the alternator and power steering pump in.

It mite be easier to remove the alternator/ PS pump in one.

p/s pump is off and removed all bolts I can find in the plate the p/s pump sits on and there's still something holding that on, I've tried removing the a/c pump from below, just struggling to access the bolts and still be able to turn the bolts as there is no room to turn them, just getting to the point where I've had enough of what should be an easy job and I'm starting to think to cut my losses and drop the subframe to gain some better access, as I'm getting nowhere fast a the moment

I had real trouble with one bolt when I done mine I had to use about 4 extentions and came at it from the o's headlight area across, sorry for the.vagueness but.it was a.few years back, or you could just scrap it it's only a.manky gull after all :)

Here is a photo of the 3 bolts position, the top one you have to get at it from the manifold side.

thats the tw#t, the bottom bolt you have arrowed, does it have a nut on the end of it, hidden by the mounting plate for the p/s pump, as that would explain why it will not undo....??

bolt head is on that side on mine,I'm just worried it's locked with a nut on the other end and that is hidden behind the metal plate the p/s pump is mounted on, I've given the bolt some serious grief and either the bolt will break or the head is about to round over, neither is a good out come, in over ten years of volvo's I've not found anything as ridiculous as this, an alternator swap should as simple as haynes make out, but no it's being a bitch...may be it will be nicer to me tomorrow.......lol

well this was the result at the end of yesterdays session......what a ballache of a job, no easy way of getting at anything, removed the dis-used air-con pump ( an almost impossible task on its own, V70 one is far easier with the bolts going in from the front ) to gain access to the lower bracket mounting bolts, but still had to remove the top alternator mounting bolt, to be able to pivot the alternator down to allow access to the top bracket mounts, wound up welding my 12mm socket to the rounded seized bolt to extract it, once the alternator had been pivoted a few times on the bracket the lower mounting bolt had eased its grip on things and I was able to carefully remove it, dispite its rounded head, all this hassle for to bolts that had corroded themselves into the bracket over the last 19 years
http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd411/moleadrian/odds%20and%20ends/DSC_0658_zps1522d43e.jpg (http://s1218.photobucket.com/user/moleadrian/media/odds%20and%20ends/DSC_0658_zps1522d43e.jpg.html)

so new regulator pack and short drive belt ordered and a gentle rebuild with plenty of copper-ease liberally applied so I don't have to go though all that ballache again for what should be a simple 3 bolt removal job

I'm well catered for in the garage, just wish the pit was a metre longer so I could still get into it with a volvo over the top, I have to shuffle the car back and forth if I want full access underneath

I bet you locktited them in lol

It would almost seem like it, though more likely to be 19 years of reaction between steel and alloy, then not helped buy lack of access and those stupid flange-headed bolts that appear to reduce the amount of surface area that the socket has available to it to drive on

I'm on the miss that car list as well, but to see her getting out to shows and events is great. I only did minor things at her: driver's seat back cable fix, heater blower motor, heated rear window/mirrors relay, antenna, strutbrace, glove box hinge fix and I can't remember...................

The alternator was stripped of it's old regulator pack and a new one fitted.

All bolts were cleaned and a light smear of grease applied (taken on board Rob's comment on copperslip and aluminium but didn't have alloyslip available at the time of reassembly) the a/c pump was left off, as sometime in the past the a/c rad was removed and the pipework cut, so no point in refitting it a present. The alternator was refitted and the 2 offending 12mm headed bolts were replaced with cap headed bolts with the thinking these would be easier to remove should I need to remove them again in the future. A new short non a/c poly-vee belt was sourced and fitted and the ecu box reassembled and bolted down again, wiring and battery all refitted and all good to go. Next job will be to fit new suspension all round once a few more replacement parts arrive.

Mounting bolts, I've been told these are single use.

Mounting bolts, I've been told these are single use.

Depending on the year. If I remember the early 850s have ace-metric bolts that help adjust camber. I think these are, but later models (like mine and yours) don't. Top mounts they always say to replace these, but I've never had any come undone.

The hard work on the Gul is yet to start, but hopefully I get some of it done at the end of the season, ready for next year. It only really needs a couple of wings and some paintwork, nothing to serious luckily. Then refit the air-con, a good detail and I will be happy with her...:)

I'd make room for a Gul if I needed to, and one or both of our Alfas will die at some stage in the not too distant future. Mine hasn't broken down for 8 days now so pretty good. A coolant hose split last week and she over heated badly.

Well no suspension fitment yesterday, but a very clean Gul now with all the winter tar spots removed from the bodywork and the faded grey bumper top scrubbed of it's patchy bumper die, cleaned then heat gunned and finally a smear of C4 to keep it looking good for the next year or 2, full claying and paint correction over the next few nights and she should be ready for the Smoke Stop meet, I would have liked to have got it all done last week for VT200 but it didn't happen and the weather was not doing it any favours really considering the Gul is on daily duties as Jaynes transport whilst the eldest daughter runs about in Jaynes V50 doing her 2 jobs and fitting college in as well.

any way enough of standing around taking pic's of shiny cars and aeroplanes and on to some bits and pieces that have been sat here awaiting fitting, firstly the suspension kit I had off Neil back in October really needed to be done and in the process a few issues that had arisen got addressed so it was a case of killing a few birds with one stone. There has for a long time been an annoying rattle present but only heard at low speeds and whilst stripping out the rear suspension found the rear arb had snapped with explained the rattle, so I thought I'd just grab the one out of the scrap v70 and fit that, but this is a way thinner item to the T-5R one (17mm as opposed to 21mm) but I have fitted it as a temporary measure as in my mine an arb is than no arb

Well it's about time

I like to do everything at the same time, hate doing job's twice (inc gearboxes...lol), I have been out for a run with the rear end sorted and have to report it is all quiet now and the rear is feeling nice and firm, but with a good responsive feel, now the front end feels wishy washy (if you can understand that) and washing out in hard corners, which will hopefully be sorted tomorrow when the front end gets it's new toys fitted and then some more test driving...:)

I love it and she gets people talking, everyone seems to have some story to tell about a Gul when you meet them at a show or somewhere you've gone in her

It certainly is....trouble is everybody knows who it is around our way, she doesn't blend into the background like some other cars...lol

the green bitches suspension is way worse than the Guls, but I'm so used to it I really can chuck it about, it really surprises people in lighter modern cars when a 2 ton brick can beat them though the lanes around here, bring on the coilovers that I had hoped to fit this year.....oh well always next year

Right the front end is all sorted tonight and has been road tested, nice and quiet with no knocks or rattles, the front end know feels right and has lost the wishy washy feeling ( but what do you expect when you take it out for a run when you've only done half the job....;) ). Showing great handling promise on a good flowing road like the evo triangle or the like, can't wait to give her a spirited test drive.

I'm currently having a small issue with the evap valve chucking up a fault code and inducing limp mode, as a short term fix I've swapped it out for the one off the olive T-5R and no further issues :), so I could just get a new one or delete it all together and was wondering if anyone has done this and what is required load, to fool the ecu that it is still in the system as the pipe work has gone so why keep the valve.....any thoughts folks..???

Adrian, suppose you could remove the working evap valve and test its resistance and add in a suitably valued resistor to stop the check engine light.

now that was what I was thinking of doing, but was't sure how the ecu would handle it, it can only be the evap valve as the only other faults are the fan half speed and the air-con pressure signal missing and it's done a couple of good runs over the last few days and no mil light ...:)

nice to hear there's another past owner on here, what number owner were you ?? I'm slowly tracing the history of the car, as and when info comes about

Steve I now you've already given me loads of info on the car, but are you able to fill in any more blanks on my owner list below an I also have jct5r to add when I know his position in the ownership history

I am not sure what number my ownership was im afraid, i bought her from the "manthatcan" via this forum around 2011...i then sold it to merc85 around the end of december that same year as i lost my garage due to land being sold for development..couldnt get another garage in a suitable location...........you probably have receipts for what i had done to it by Braydon Motors, ........if i think of anything else i will let you know...if you ever decide to sell.........................

Is the loom already there of the switch?

The 850 loom is not and never was equipped for this item, so I took similar colour wires from and old harness and added to Guls to break the Aeriel supply and jumped the illumination supply from the neighbouring switch and fitted the pins into the existing connector in the car and to the connector that came with the switch after pulling out the old ones and double checking the pin out on the switch

Just a quick update ( and an apologie as posts 116 to 118 should be in project olive as that was the car that got the new custom rip and intake pipes, didn't realise I stuck a mention of them in the wrong thread....sorry ) Gul had her first outing for 2016 with a run to VT's Vulcan cockpit tour meet. We had a lovely run down (cleared a few cobwebs out in the process) and all was good, till we found that the starter had given up the ghost, luckily there where enough volvo fans there to give the old girl a bump start in the field ( not the easiest of surfaces to push a car on....but thank you all that did ), we then left her running for most of the afternoon and had a trouble free run home. I yesterday stripped the starter that pack up prior to this one, cleaned and checked it all over, re-assembled it with fresh grease and refitted it to the Gul. All seems good and she's starting with ease, time will tell if this unit is still good, but I could not find anything wrong with other than age related crud inside. The interesting thing on refitting was that the back bracket doesn't line up with the bolt hole in the engine block and the bracket is fitted completely differently to the other starter I have, so I was wondering if any one else has come across this and whether it was different on other models like for instance an auto ??

And nobody seems to have noticed a subtle change to the Gul's appearance.......new headlights, I know they are a bit of a marmite thing a some will love em and some will think I've gone mad, although I can't complain at the price for a lighting upgrade for under £70 delivered for the pair. The fit still requires a little fettling for me to be totally happy with them, but they do help to give a 20 year old car a more modern look.

Great to see a 854 Gul.
I know that Volvo headlights are terrible ( very poor on dip beam ) but those after market headlights look really horrible. The standard headlights suit the car so much better, it must be my age as I like cars looking 100% oem!
At least you will be able to in the dark now though!

they'll always be a marmite thing with folks, but I then again I like marmite :) I still have the originals kept safe, as I have done always with the mods to our fleet of volvo's as I realise that some day they may need to return to standard to possibly achieve their best market price in the very unlikely event that I could no longer keep them.

well thank you, she does have a bit of rust coming on the lip of the bootlid above the number plate, which I hope to deal with when the weather is nice and warm, as I can't see the point in trying to sort it now. She's also now just weeping a little oil, so some seals are required and a couple of new handbrake cables as they've reached the end of there working life, but other than that she's going like a trooper, blew a few cobwebs out on a private track at 135 a while back, she would have done more but the private track was a bit too short, so anchors tested into the bargain.....:)

I had the handbrake shoes etc sorted just before I sold her so they should be OK still, unless you've been doing handbrake turns?

it's funny really as the handbrakes effect is next to none when parking and it then seizes when you want to drive off now, I rock it back then forward to release it, thats what makes me think the shoes have de-laminated, anyway it needs sorting soon.

Think that it was after a good wash tbh, which has happened with every Volvo that I've had. Try to take them for a spin after a wash now.

Well it was time to get the satellites with the winters on off the car and get her back onto titans for the summer. Unfortunately the 2 front winters have been destroyed in 5 months on the car. I suspected the tracking was the issue here, so I source a full set of tyres from my local wholesaler and headed off to my tyre fitter to have them mounted on the titan's. Back home and fitted the wheels and done a couple of short trips to settle the suspension, before returning to the tyre peeps for a quick suspension checkover and getting the tracking sorted, the suspension all appears ok with no undue movement, the same could not be said for the tracking, which was a mile out so was duly adjusted as necessary. The steering is much nicer now and the steering wheel is straight again, rather than being offset to the drivers side. The steering still has a slight pull to the passenger side but the road surface wasn't great when I checked it.

Also the Gul has taken centre stage on VT's FB page in a very nice photo from their Thockmorton meet last year......thanks Stephen...:)

I use a free program called GIMP....a poor mans PS.

You open the image, duplicate it - then on the 2nd image you add a layer mask & desaturate it. You then simply use the brush tool to paint the areas you want returning to colour.

Really easy once you've done it a few times

Shame you and a few others couldn't make it, may be next year. It was a bit windy on the Thursday, but that dropped off on the Friday before everybody else turned up, sun was lovely and hot and I got cooked on the Saturday afternoon, whilst the others popped into Barmouth for chips. As for the car in the tent, I got some right funny looks backing it in there and taking photos of her, big tent to swallow a whole Volvo.

Got to the bottom of an annoying handling issue which has just recently cropped up, where by if you are turning left and then tighten the turn slightly then the car responds with what I can only describe as rear steering and goes into oversteer. I thought at first the rear shock may have broken the top mount and changed it, but no improvement. I was out doing a few bits and bobs on the Olive and as I had the jack out, I then popped the offending corner of the Gul in the air for a better look at what was going on the rear suspension. All became clear when I popped a lever in between the body and the delta link bush....shed loads of play....the next issue was how to remove the mounting as I knew a special tool is required and it isn't in my toolbox so I made up an attachment for my slide hammer, which promptly failed to remove the part let alone budged it.. so back to the drawing board and I will be making myself a new tool to push the part out and hopefully pull the new one back into place and without the need to drop the whole axle....pic's to follow if it works.

Thanks Guys, just been out for a quick look at the issue and I'm of the opinion that the fuel pump is dead after approximately 300,000 miles which also happen on the Olive a while back with similar miles, so once this mornings chores are out of the way I'll check out the pump and most probably swap it out for the spare one I have here from the old v70 2.0l. Not bad though if the life span of bosch fuel pumps are 280-300,000 miles.

Right time to move on.... (as if lol) ....to sorting out bits and bobs, rear delta setup needs full refurb, various oil leaks, stiff power steering in cold conditions, non existent handbrake and a general service with new cam belt, pcv etc, refurbed front calipers and 302 brakes and discs....first step spare front and rear brake calipers and hangers stripped and shot blasted at work tonight...now the expensive bit...the rest.

Tbf she's not really cost much in just short of 2 1/2 years of ownership, so getting the engine and running gear in tune with the new suspension has got to be a plus, especially as the passenger side delta link is fubar'd, time to test the new custom extraction tool

The outer Delta link bush removal and insertion tool isn't expensive and very good if you increase the pin diameter by a couple of mm.

The outer Delta link bush removal and insertion tool isn't expensive and very good if you increase the pin diameter by a couple of mm.

I made the tool a while back and had a relatively good dummy run on an spare subframe, but a small amount of heat will no doubt be needed if the bush is being really stubborn and the tool will pull the new bush back in with ease. Will most likely refurb the spare subframe and just swap the lot in one go, that's assuming the v70 p1 rear suspension is the same as the 850, they look the same to me unless I've missed something.

Thanks Tim, tbf it pulled the first one perfectly, which was in good condition for it's age, but the second was a different story, but a touch of heat and easy peasy. So no differences in 850/v70 rear setups, so a straight swap is no issue ??

Thanks for the info, the spare subframe will be stripped and painted etc, before being rebuilt the same as the T-5R's are at present, then I'll have a swap over day, when the front brake calipers can be changed to and the braking system filled with nice new fluid and goodrich braided hoses all round..:)

Well it has been a while....

Gul is soldiering on well and receiving parts as and when she needs them, so far she as had the rear brakes fully rebuilt, including new handbrake cables, new disc's and linings all round. I lost the clutch on the way to work one day and had to be recovered by the RAC. I suspected the slave cylinder so stripped it out and replaced it and then decided to refresh the brake and clutch fluids whilst i was about it, so all old fluid was blown out and new added and bled through the braking system until flowwing clean (some fair amount of muck came out tbh), the clutch was a total nightmare to bleed and when I finally got some pressure, it blew the hard pipe to bits, just under the air box, so and new pipe was ordered of Sweden and duly turned up a few days later. Pipe is now fitted and bled finally, pedal is a tad low imho, but after the hassle I had bleeding it, I'm not messing with it again, in case I loose it again. Also I have changed both front lower arms and sorted out an oil leak from the filler cap and in the process cured a misfire that had been alluding me for quite some time. New plugs fitted (champion this time as they were on the shelf, so we'll see how they do over time against OEM'S) and leads changed, seems a bit laggy low down now, but as soon as she comes on boost, it's solid all the way up through the rev range. Next will have to be front wings and paint, as they are shot to be fair, but that will have to be a winter project in the dry.

Just resurrecting this thread as we're talking about my old Gul elsewhere.
I was quoted £2.5k for the full respray, and this was by a bodyshop that I use every year for one car or another, and their prices have always been decent for the other jobs.
I think that the colour worried them for whatever reason.

Resurrected.....cheeky lol, the thread gets a bit added as and when, I'm less active on that since photobucket and flickr held it's users to ransom over photo hosting, so I need to find another way to get photos on here easily and then hopefully the service will return to normal. As for your comment about the body shop and their concern about the paint colour, I wonder if they are more concerned about spraying over the old water based paint that was originally applied at the factory, I'm going to have to do some serious research before even attempting this or stump up the cash and have it done for me, though will be stripping off as much as possible before the respray as there are certain areas that really want some serious attention, such as the engine bay, roof, and the rear 1/4, just for starters.

On a different note I have just picked up and few goodies to go onto Gul in the next few months, they consist of a Forge Re-Circ Valve to replace the blanking valve on the turbo, a smart RaceTech boost gauge and a Forge Mbc (oh yes time for the Frankie Valve). I am also planning to make her a 3" angle flange downpipe, which will mate to an angle flange hotside I have kicking about, which will be fitting to the 15g, which will in turn will be mounted onto a modified Japanifold that is left over from olives last round of modifications, the downpipe will then exit into olives old Jetex/Bsr cat back system. I am considering adding a set of blues too, just to compensate as the flow should be much improved and the current map will easily handle it all, as all the mods have been tried and tested on olive with no issues, so it seems a waste to leave the cast off bits on the shelf, when I could free up some more horses and make her even better than she is now.

Well lock down has benefited Gul a bit and she has just received a full pcv change and whilst the inlet was off, it was bored out and a 960 3" TB fitted. On re-assembly the standard pipework layout was upgraded with do88 pipes throughout and mikalor clamps, other small pipes where replaced with silicone items. To be honest this has really helped the low down pickup and gets her pulling better earlier in the low rev range. I have a few pic's but unsure of the best way to up load at present as I've stopped using flickr and pooponyoubucket, once I find a better photo manager I'll get some shots up.......next is manifold and turbo hotside upgrades, along with a new 3" dp and modified cat-back bsr/jetex system, that should really liven her up with her intake mods.

Thanks Morgan, the engine bay is probably one of the best bits at present along with the interior, sadly the body I can not say the same for at present, which is requiring new wings and a full respray, hopefully that will get done in time, the engine has recently been changed but has turned out to be a dog and will be coming out again soon, when a suitable replacement is ready, so all the bit's will get another clean no doubt.

The last one I made wound up in Australia for exactly the same reason, JamesT-5R couldn't find one, so I made him one and sent it over for his exhaust guys to fab up his new 3" dp for his green bitch, I found the same problem when I was looking for one, as they advertise that they are 3", but when you check the dimensions you then find they are not what you lead to believe most of the time.

Going from left to right is Gul's turbo hotside progression, from conical flange to straight flange that is fitted now with Olive's old decat downpipe, to the next stage to be fitted with is the 3" angled flanged hotside on the right, just got to get it on and fab up the new dp, can't decide whether to include a sports cat or just straight pipe it for now, should any issues arise I could easily add on later I'm thinking. Should be a lot freer flowing than the old conical or straight flange setup and will go nicely with the modified japanifold that I recently fitted.

Gul's original engine is under going a full strip down and refurb at present, this appears to be the original engine and hopefully I will be able to confirm this as soon as I find where the engine number is hidden, none of the past owners have ever changed the number on the vehicle registration document and she has done 250-300,000 miles as far as I'm guessing as speedo's have been swapped in her history as they have stopped reading miles, as they do when the cogs wear out. Looking at chucking a set of forged rods in whilst she apart and they are on the shelf ready to go in. May look into upgrading the turbo to a 19t or hybrid 19t whilst we are playing about with her.

Well the engine is fully stripped now and despite me buying and using the correct tools for removing the cam cover it appears that someone else previously was not so careful, I was surprised that even where the damage was that we didn't have any oil leaks from the cam seals. The head could be scrap anyway and still has to be checked for flatness yet, as water has managed to get into a few of the bores when we had the massive loss of coolant and she overheated, if it can be salvaged then it will be played with port wise and fully reconditioned before re-assembly. http://www.vpcuk.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=33079&stc=1
As for the block, the bores will be checked and then honed if ok or the block may require a re-bore, forged rods are sat on the shelf ready to go in and cylinders will be shimmed, everything will be checked over and replaced if necessary and as you can see there is a lot of cleaning to do over the next few weeks, then hopefully I can then start to get her painted and start building her back up again.

I don't know why people get so worried about the cam thrust faces being broken, as long as they is a good portion of the thrust face left on the head and on the cam cover the thrust face will do it's job.

Is it a later one with the oval top inlet ports or the older type with the notch?

It's the older type with the notch, looks like a better port design in my mind, as far as the injectors go, as they seem to have better transition into the airflow, but hey what do I know..lol, I'm guessing the later oval type were designed for the later me7 inlet manifold, thus the injector position had probably move a bit to allow for no notch...??
