Oh dear......

27142

Getting it out of the weather.....

27139

So the new arrival is taking up residence for a bit of TLC at IVS in Letchworth. Some of you may have seen this on the bay last week. Had a chat with the owner & got it bought as it looked too good to be true. Its a 1 owner car [now 3 - me plus the ebayer], 145k, manual 850R in grey with a dark interior.

The screen is gone, bonnet is knackered & the drivers headlight obliterated. Pesky kids venting their rage against the bleakness of existence or some such..or pissed...or well, who cares.. we'll never know happily...however, the neighbours kicked up a fuss & the original owner had to get it shifted. The bloke I bought it off took it off his hands then felt he'd bitten of more than he could chew so was thinking of breaking it but luckily was a very nice fella & saw sense, agreeing a quick sale.

The old beast has been sat under a tree for the past 6 years, allegedly for a flat battery! Previously however the car wanted for nothing - has a full service history, main dealer / indie Volvo specialist. He'd even put new set of tyres on about 2 month before it got parked up. Interior is very good -only worn through leather on the gear knob letting it down, everything else is very tidy, albeit covered in shards of glass atm!

27141

For those of you who ever doubt a swedes resilience take a good long look at that photo then ask yourself - could it start?!?

Oh yes....... battery in, key, turn & first time. Driven it around the car park & everything works although the breaks will need some attention. Will be making a list once we get it up on a ramp & give it a good going over. My love of the old 850's just keeps on growing :)

First things first & that's a new screen which gets fitted tomorrow. Then I can get the muck blasted off & see what lies beneath. Plan at this stage is to keep it OE & get it back to full roadworthiness.

Looking forward to returning this car to it's former glory...no idea what I'm going to do with it once I have as I've already got my red 850R.......but that's a worry for another day......

Proper job!! :D

Unbelievable how they'll start after so long, my previous record was about a year of non running, but 6 years under a tree, with the bonnet open from the looks of things?!

I bet the peteol is minging too!

Don't mess with the Swedes!! :D

Couldn't believe it when the bonnet opened ...a good half inch of nut kernels over the head. Mice or squirrels we think but thankfully then never got inside the cabin or chewed out any of the wiring!

Little update as I got rained off today...fairweather builders eh!?!

27146

Windscreen done, smashed bonnet & headlight removed. Started on cleaning out 6 years of crud from the engine bay:

27147

Still a fair bit of cleaning work to go but I was really please how quickly it started to come back.

A few shots of the interior now that its seen the vacuum cleaner:

I've got a donor 850 for the bonnet & headlight so will be getting them on before moving it back outside later this week for a good clean & see how well the bodywork comes up :)

more updates to follow.....

whats the plans for this one then morgan? time spent from doing the red one

Shinsplintz 101
Thursday 16th October 2014, 20:33
Not sure tbh. The red one has plans for next year, just getting the fettling funds together. It's modified & so might as well take it a bit further down that road. This grey one came along, always loved Andy's, think they look great grey on grey & so couldn't say no really. Going to bring it back OE then either sell it on or keep it. That's as far as I've got! I've also got he auto 850r that I need to make a plan for - possibly a manual conversion with the younger engine out of the S70r that I'm breaking. My head hurts just thinking about it to be fair :)

Shinsplintz 101
Thursday 16th October 2014, 21:11
I can't do it fella - its too good a car. I'm not into it for much money, it's sitting in a safe place & I'm happy to wait for either someone who wants a project to come along & take it off my hands for sensible money [as we all know they're getting pretty thin on the ground] or i'll get around to doing some work to it next year & getting it to a place where I can move it on for decent money to pump back into my R. I don't mind breaking the CAT C/D's but I'm going to try & keep as many 850 T5/R's on the road as I can - don't ask my why, its not logical, just love to see these cars blasting around & would be a shame to see another one go to the knackers yard for the sake of a few quid.

I've always admired yours from afar fella, as after the red estate R's the grey saloon is my favourite. Just happy to get a chance to put this one back together as it wasn't as far gone as the pictures might have shown. Underneath looks solid & with new brakes & a few bushes plus a service this old beast should be good to go again! Really looking forward to getting the mop out & cutting back through those 6years of grime & seeing if I can get the paintwork back, I do love a challenge!

I should also add that I'm not doing it for Kudos - far from it - I'm genuinely a bit obsessed - ask my missus who thinks I'm stark raving mad with my 850 's, not to mention Tony @ IVS who I'm sure inwardly groans every time another flatbed pulls up with one of my ebay purchases onboard, about to take up yet more valuable customer parking at his busy garage :)

Friday 17th October 2014, 15:56
Two 855 R's in red, one grey 854 R, a silver S70R that I'm breaking (cat d) and the V70 t5 estate that I bought a a a run around for the old man. So 5 in total. Soon to be 4 once I've got the last bits off the s70 & it goes to the scrappy. So not too bad - but eBay is leathal after a few cheeky shandies & a PayPal account linked to the business credit card - must learn to resist!

He did & loves it. The laser is a nice car, been tweaked a bit too, but sadly it's a slush box so looses points on that front. We'll looked after though - was in having all the induction & cooling hoses changed for new oe ones.

BIG slap on the back mate, well done for saving it and not breaking it. Looks like its going to clean up beautifully.

I wish I had access to a workshop like that. But on the other hand, I'd also end up with half a dozen Volvos, so the missus wouldn't be quite so pleased as me! :D

Tuesday 10th February 2015, 00:01
Well, its been a while - bringing the old beast back has had to play second fiddle to the day to day humdrum of family life & work for the past few months - but fear not progress has been made:

28045
Engine bay is coming along nicely. Still a bit to do but quite pleased how the crud has come away without too much hassle

2804628047
Had a nice wash this week, first in about 6 years by my reckoning. Going to take another couple & a good cut, polish & wax before it really gleams. The bonnet, windscreen & headlamp have all been replaced over the winter as time allowed. The interior is much as the earlier photos - albeit a bit cleaner again - and smells a lot better, much less damp!

28048
A very important moment in this cars resurrection - it passed the MOT first time!!! All I had done was change the oil. The breaks were on the list for getting changed out anyhow so no drama there. I was worried it might flag up more tbh after sitting for so long but Ii think the previous good maintenance prior to it getting laid up have served it well.

I've been out for a couple of test drives [only short ones sadly] & it pulls well, no smoke, smooth through the gears, no nasty clunking. I need a longer run to give the ECU a chance to relearn as it can hang a bit under hard acceleration but apart from that happy days.

Got an order going into RUFE this week for some new bits & bobs, will keep you fellas posted.

All the best, Morgan

I need to de crud my engine bay, any tips?

Shinsplintz 101
Tuesday 10th February 2015, 00:12
I honestly just used a small brass wire brush on the metal as it doesn't scratch but will lift off the oxidation. A tooth brush, damp rag & some soapy water everywhere else & the air hose off the compressor to dry everything after. Gave the plastics & the metal a light wipe over with oil to stop them whiting up. I'm no expert & there are loads of weird & wonderful products - I just didn't have any to hand so had to go old school! It's a bit laborious but worth the effort. Oh & latex gloves - it's a proper mucky job & they're a lifesaver unless you have a lifetimes supply of Swarfega :)

Ettienne
Tuesday 10th February 2015, 00:15
I'll try some degreaser and wash it off for starters and a toothbrush then

Shinsplintz 101
Tuesday 10th February 2015, 00:20
Just go easy with the degreaser - I had a nightmare on my red 850R - used too much, made the block go white & stripped the wax off the wings where I splashed it in my haste - awful stuff if it goes wrong! I laugh now, but not at the time.

Got the car tucked up on the drive whilst I wait for a few parts to arrive.

I did get the wheels done on Monday [Diamond wheels in Letchworth] Refurbed all four in Satin Chrome. Great sameday service, £50+VAT a corner, powder coated & sprayed & I'm really happy with the result. Cars booked in for a body work repair on the rear o/s arch that has a ding & the parts for the minor bits & bobs are arriving in dribs & drabs. Just had a nice big box of lights for the front end from PFV & RUFE will be sending me out a pretty hefty parcel by the end of the week. Just have to find the time then to put it all together!

I've been enjoying driving it around this week - put about 100 miles on it just pootling about & finding any old reason to go & pick something up, just to get out in the old beast - it's a really nice drive!! Pulls hard even though its standard, M59 gives a little extra grip through the twisties under load & all in all its a great driving car. Shown up a few cocky young fellas in their Jap Krap :)The problem I'm now going to have is parting with it once all the works done.

Onwards & upwards...

Fitted the new main & sidelights to the front this week.....thanks PFV, went in a treat.
28252

I've refreshed the number plates & re-attached the rear spoiler - so no more irritating brake warning light every time I press the middle peddle!

28253

Started a bit of paint correction yesterday as it was nice enough to work outside for a few hours, lots of tree sap & other bits of crud stuck to the lacquer. Didn't get much done as I was going easy on the old mop - concentrated on the boot lid as a sample area - but really pleased with the way the lustre came back. Roll on some nicer weather so I can attack the rest of the car....

28254

Got a list of parts to confirm with RUFE this week...front & rear discs & pads are first on the list. Going to upgrade the fronts to 302's & get braided hoses all round plus a flush of the system with some nice new brake fluid :) Going to give a the full stage 0 tune up too, even though it has been very well maintained, just for peace of mind.

Cheers, Morgan

Looking very good! Was only wondering the other day how things were going with this! Great to see progress being made, it's looking spot on, reminds me of mine when I first started attacking the paintwork! The shine and depth of colour is well worth the effort especially in the sun, you'll think the car is two different colours on a dull day compared to a bright day.

Its been good fun driving the grey, even standard the R's a lovely driving experience, done about 300 odd miles in it now trying to find issues as it sat for so long, but I'm pleased to report very few.

Missing the rawness of the red - waargghhhh, waaaggghhh....waaarrgggg...rattling through the gears desperately trying to keep traction. Happy days!

This cars definitely going once I've done the work, I've had quite a bit of interest already & all the funds will be ploughed back into making the Red a real weapon

I'd quite like to keep it but the harsh reality is it would sit & gather dust as between my Van for work & the Red it'd never get driven - and to my mind these cars need a good thrashing on a regular basis to keep them healthy. Would prefer someone else to get some enjoyment out of it - even Frankie!!

Monday 9th March 2015, 10:13
Bit more work done on the old beast this week.

I've put nearly 500 miles on it in the last fortnight to try & iron out any issues - the only things to come up are a dodgy thermostat [now replaced with OE Volvo part] & a small blow on the centre coupling on the exhaust [rotten clamp - to be done]. Its running really well mechanically which has allowed me a chance to get on with some cosmetic work.....

28325283262832728332

So I've done a bit more tidying up in the engine bay, re-coloured the drivers seat as well as cleaning & feeding the entire interior with gliptone [amazing smell to this stuff, last of the mildew odour well & truly gone now :)]

I,ve mopped & polished the whole car, not a full correction by any means, but certainly a good start

Before: you can see how cloudy the lacquer is & the layers of tree sap welded on!

2832828329

After: Clay bar, cut, polish & Quick detailer [no wax yet as I want to do a bit more correction before I seal it up]

2833028331

I've treated all the plastics & rubbers also, door handles etc...and its given the car a nice crisp look again. I've tried a few of the weird & wonderful dyes/treatments but so far I've fount the autoglym bumper/trim gel to give the best results & last longest.

Not a bad week really, fitted in around work & very irritating cold that has dragged on for ever....

Next step is the full stage zero - booked in with mr Williams later this month/early april - & the bodyshop to repair the o/s rear arch booked for the end of april.

I've had a few offers on the car already, just got to decide if I'm going to let it go before I complete my planned work or see it through o the bitter end before passing it on to a lucky new owner.

Cheers, Morgan

Bit of an update......

I've had a fair bit of interest in the car after I mentioned that I'd be letting it go, a few offers etc.... however, this morning a very nice fella made the trip down from Brum to test drive the car, loved it & has made me a solid offer. So pending the deposit the car is now SOLD!!

It will be a few weeks before it changes hands as I've got to wait for the plate transfer (the private plate is going on my red) so I'll still be taking it along to Grantham & I've got a few minor bits to finish prior to handing it on but very pleased. Really enthusiastic fella & I'm confident the car will be going to a good home.
