V70 R Running Issues

Looking for some advice on some running issues I have with my 1999 V70 R at the moment.

A few weeks ago the car started running lumpy on tick over causing the car to cut out when coming to a stop at a junction or traffic lights, the car went to a local garage who said it was dirt in the throttle housing which they cleaned and car seemed ok again for a week before the issue returned. Car was taken back to the garage and the car was plugged back into the diagnostic but the car had stopped letting them scan for faults and wouldn’t communicate at all. They tried cleaning the throttle housing again but didn`t make any difference.

The issue seems to come and go at the moment as the car will run lumpy and die when first started from either cold or warm, but if I turn the ignition off and restart it a couple of times it will run fine all the way to work or just start being lumpy again after only a few minutes.
If you’re still with me after my waffle, I guess I’m asking if anyone has any advice for me on what the issues could be or could point me in the direction of an independent Volvo specialist in the North East as i don’t fancy paying dealer prices after speaking to them about a previous issue and the said they would need to contact a museum for info on my car as it so old lol

Now then fella, sorry to hear the car isn't running right

It is an ME7 so could be the ETM, try using this flowchart to identify the fault

http://www.xemodex.com/technologyimproved/pdf/ETM%20Diagnostic%20Flow%20Chart.pdf

The main dealer I use is Mill Volvo in Sunderland, also there is a good independent garage in Southwick just along the road - Scotts Bank Motors.

Show Mill Volvo the receipts for the cat & oxy sensors they might give you a go on the diagnostics for free ;)

edit

forgot to add, Paul who runs Scotts Bank Motors is an ex-Volvo guy

Yep ETM failure, I would guess yours is still original and will have a white label, It will need replacing or overhauling, with a yellow label unit or better, volvo can charge a fortune for this, but there are other ways, I changed mine for one off a forum member (Wobbly :) ) this was a yellow label model which is far less likely to cause future problems, this are supposedly coded to the car, I left the battery off for 7 days and all ran fine. As Dave will tell you it is all to do with a breakdown of a set of wires in the throttle body's sensor, I think you can get them rebuilt, or fitted with a wireless sensor, but WD did not seem to impressed thought as I understand regarding the wireless option, I'm sure he will be along shortly to enlighten us

It's a carbon track with metal brushes Ade, but you're close enough ;) the brush wears through the carbon track and causes incoherent readings to be sent to the ECU, causing it to "twitch" the throttle to compensate.

Thing is, the lumpy idle and stalling fits ETM failure but the fact it behaves sometimes makes me wonder if there isn't something else involved too. Crank sensor or summat?

sounds just like my 1999 V70R AWD etm failure, just run it some more and she'll die mid corner or somewhere else

Yeah, that's proper ETM but for it to work one day and not the next makes me suspicious.

Nope, ETM failure for sure! That's exactly the symptoms I had on my 1999 V70R. One minute it would drive sweet, the next it would keep cutting out. This went on for a week or two before I finally drove it to the dealer where they fitted a new ETM and software. Difference was night and day.

Looks like ETM as it can have an intermittent failure where it can run for sometime.

Thanks for the reply`s guys, as I`m mechanically thick I`m going to have to find somebody local to sort the issues for me as I would cause more problems that it already has lol

This is a photo of the scan from today, can anyone help me decode the faults please ???

ECM 6806 - Turbo charger (TC) Control valve, flow fault.

This is likely to be a faulty TCV. You can disconnect the TCV and see how the car drives. You won't get anymore boost than default wastegate setting so expect about 5psi, but the car should drive smooth and progressive. If it improves when disconnected, then suspect a faulty TCV or air leak. Check all the TCV hoses are not split, especially at the turbo (common fault) thou more likely to cause ECM 6805. This fault can also be logged by a faulty ETM.

ECM 904C - MIL requested by throttle unit.

Meaning, Malfunction Indicator Lamp or Engine Management light, has been set by a fault withing the ETM (Electronic Throttle Module), via the ECM (Engine Control Module). Basically means there is a fault with the ETM.
First step would be to remove and clean (thoroughly). Refit, clear DTCs and test. If MIL request comes back then your looking at a replacement ETM and software at the Dealer.

ECM 644A - Camshaft position, exhaust.

When was the timing belt changed??
If you suspect it hasn't been or it's over due or getting close to replacement, then your first course of action should be a new timing belt and tensioner kit. Inspect the water pump whilst your there and if any residue is present, replace the water pump!
Secondly, you may have a fault with the VVT. However, before you go down that route, I would start with an oil change as VVT units can be very sensitive to contaminated or dirty oil.

As per your original post, your symptoms are classic ETM failure that all 1997-2000 MY P1 V70s suffered from. As I and others have said, based on your symptoms and the above fault codes, you are without doubt, looking at a replacement ETM.
ECM 6806 can also be caused by an internal air leak. If your ETM is not functioning correctly then it will cause flow issues under certain conditions and these will manifest themselves as other faults ie TCV control, MAF codes, etc.

Hope that helps.
