View Full Version : S60 vs V70 passenger cabin

I was giving someone a lift home in the S60 last night. As I picked up the other half from work, one of her colleagues who lives just up the road needed to get home, so I offered him a lift. I've done this before for him and previously and always in the V70, sothis was the first trip he'd had in the S60.

I noticed he struggled to get in and out of the back of the S60 far more than the V70 and I just wondered if the passenger cabin was physically shorter on the S60? In other words, less leg room for the rear passenger cabin.

I've been explaining to people that the V70 and S80 are the executive estate and saloon cars whereas the S60 was designed and launched as a 'Sports Sedan', so in effect is 'inferior' in spec to that of the other 2 models. I wonder if the car is physically smaller inside too. This supports my belief that the speaker system quality seems better in the V70 that the S60 and that the SE spec in the S60 doesn't included the heated front seats that are present in the V70.

Anyway, can anyone confirm whether or not the S60 passenger cabin is in fact shorter than that of the V70 (P2)...?

I dont belive it is however the curve on the door area does make it harder to get im and out as have had both and the s60 was harder to clean the back area out

How can you say that the spec of an S60 is inferior to the V70, they're the same. :slap: The V70R has no more or less equipment than a S60R, and it's the same as the rest of the range. Different option packs may have been specified when a car was being built which would be the only reason a V, or S of equivalent level differ.
As for getting in the back, the S60 has more steeply sloped doors than the V70, as for legroom I wouldn't know as I've never sat in the back of a V70.

The V70 & S60 rear floor mats are different. The V70 mats are a inch or so longer.
That's why they are listed separately.

Oh and as for the speaker side of it, the speaker quality will be the same but the sound will be different because of the cabin space and shape deflecting the sound waves in a different pattern causing the acoustics to be 'DIFFERENT' not 'INFERIOR'!

There's about 40-50mm difference in floorpan length between the V70 and S60, I found that out when I tried to fit S60 skirts to the sweed.

For the record, mine's SE spec and has sod-all but the bare minimum, not even an internal temp sensor. It had 2 cup holders but they were swapped for an ashtray/cubby arrangement (nobody ever smokes in the car).

Don't worry James... I'm with you... A S60 isn't a real Volvo....(hence why I now own 3 Mitsubishis and one of them has a Renault(????) engine...).

Am I the only 1 that thought of course they are different?
I've worked in Toyota & vauxhalls car plants & the estate cars & saloon cars never share the same floor pan. The stress & impact points are completely different for the body to be welded to which cause the cars to banana or twist. ;)

No one is denying they are different and it's been proven that the V70 has more leg room, the problem I have with his statement is the use of the word 'Inferior' in relation to the specs!

From what I've read over the years the V70 is based on the S80 chassis.

There are two levels of speaker pack the 'premium' (?) package with the added option of sub in the spare wheel well.

Meant to also say... many were company cars and the tax brackets might have made it better to buy a 'inferior' model and spec it up and vice versa. FWIW my V70 SE has everything bar the shat nav and headrest screens, folding mirrors, sub, zenons, the works :P

Yeah whatever James. You keep believing that. It's no wonder you're falling out with people left, right and centre with your stupid comments. I suggest you look up the specifications between my car and your car! There is no way that my S60 is inferior to your V70 in specification! You can't get away with saying it, as you own clapped out examples if both models, if you'd driven decent examples you'd know they're roughly the same. In fact a S60 is a superior car for ride and handling, as the body shell has more torsional rigidity.

How can you compare a S60 Diesel to a V70 T5, compare a S60 T5 to the V70 T5 (both with the same options) and that would be a fair comparison, it's like comparing a 854 10 valve and a 855 T-5R and saying all 854's are inferior (which they are ;) )

There's a button on the dash for making the rear headrests fold down to give you a better view out of the back window. When you press the button they come down with a fair force. Ideal if you have misbehaving kids in the back. One button press and there would be silence he he

Both are superior to their standard model equivalent because they were designed as the ultimate in luxury and performance in their day. It's like comparing a new S60 T6 to an S60 Polestar today, the Polestar will offer a superior spec to match the price tag and the demographic.

Aside from the obvious differences and just concentrating from a driver's seat point of view both cars have exactly the same dashboard, the S80 is the odd one out when it comes to interiors.

The sound system in my dad's R is the same entry level R spec system as mine but it sounds better due to the shape of the interior, it sounds fuller.

Both cars have crap leg room but the s60 is worse but the rear seats in the s60 are a better shape IMO

I actually can't believe he is arguing the fact. They are the same car , Volvo will never admit that the S60 is the saloon version of the V70 because on realise Volvo said there wasn't going to be a saloon V70 (S70) but they did do it (S60) :) I don't know what's not to get there. Nope... S80 shares more parts although not by much. Mechanically, the S80 and v70 are very similar, hence the Haynes covering both models and a separate manual existing for the S60.
I've still got my doubts :p

My Little German has heated electric seats which also have electric side bolsters and electric lumbar support. Bi xenon headlights, auto dimming rear mirror, auto fold passenger mirror glass when reversing. Auto on headlights and wipers, widescreen sat nav, Harmon Kardon stereo with subs and full iPod control, electric rear blind, soft nappa leather, 19" wheels and an illuminated gear knob.

Steve, this should help us get to 10 pages of dribble

It's about time we put this thread to rest. What started as an interesting thread with a genuine question, has turned into a playground farce - some members should just grow up.

We took the new V40 r design out for a test drive the other week, really nice car but the boot was terrible, would of been really tricky getting our dog in and out of it, so we opted for the new golf. I reckon even a golf club bag wouldn't fit in sideways in the Volvo.

Me...!!! (My 850)....

As I said racing pedigree in the UK(regardless of wins for the estate as the saloon won 11 in total).. The engine from the estate car was used right through to the S40.

Australians only like two cars Holden and Ford. Volvo are trying to break the market by sending over their inferior car!!

Plus TWR also worked on Rovers, they were slags of the Motorsport world!

You said winning racing pedigree, and they 855 you posted a picture off never won, and don't forget, they were built by the 'slags' of motorsport TWR as well, so does that make them irrelevant?
As for your 850 being built in Gothenburg, so was an Ikea chest of drawers we have, and it moves more than your 850, so can we include that?
You obviously haven't watched V8 Supercars in a while, as Nissan, and Mercedes both race in the series too.:D

Right, this thread appears to originally have been based on James personal opinion of what is inferior and not actually fact. So in that case this makes all your cars inferior as the T-5R is undoubtedly the superior car here and anything afterwill, with out doubt be inferior FACT (well in my personal view anyway):bow_kneel

Haha but did you see the right hand drive ones built in Gothenburg..?

It's like buying a posh set of Sheffield knives - the steel may come from China and the handles from Mexico, it's still got "Made in Sheffield" on it.

So a VIN with "made in Gothenberg, Sweden" on it is (ahem) "superior" to one with "made in Belgium" (which isn't a real country) on it :D

With James logic, he will probably buy a third car as it will save him even more money than just running two at the same time. It will be a C70, then he will say its inferior as it's missing two back doors lol.

Having had both cars (quite a few S60s) all D5's, Id say the S60 is the tighter car, and the V70 is very floaty. Both have superb seats, both are superb in quality whatever spec. Ones thing that p**ses me off about the V70 is the rattles here and there from the rear plastics

Still love the old bus though

;)

no rattles from the rear plastics on my V70 and get your wheel alignment done or new shocks, that will sort out the floaty sensation.
