After the engine I rebuilt developed a smoking habit and had to refit my old engine I`ve be thinking about what to do with the engine.
To overhaul the head, bore out the block, a set of rings and head gasket + bolts I`m looking at around £500 - 600
So when a V70R P1 series 3 engine came up for sale for song I could turn it down.

Had to remove the ME7 cam sensor and fit the 850 cam sensor which fitted with no problems, the only other thing to do is to lock the VVT pulley which I need to get a new pulley manufactured.

http://i1067.photobucket.com/albums/u433/oblark/volvo%20850%20t5/Project%20ME7/20140823_144608.jpg (http://s1067.photobucket.com/user/oblark/media/volvo%20850%20t5/Project%20ME7/20140823_144608.jpg.html)

I`m in two minds what to do with this engine once I`ve locked the VVT cam,

Option 1.

Clean & paint it then fit it into the car.

Cost - £0

Option 2.

Remove the head, fit my forged rods & shim the liners.

Cost - £150 (head gasket, head bolts and rear main seal)

This is what the plugs look like, the engine has done 90k miles and has been in dry storage for the last 5 years.

Can you not just fit a pre ME7 exhaust cam pulley? or is it not that simple?

Should have known. Will pre ME7 cams fit a ME7 engine? if so can you keep the pre ME7 pulley?

Pre ME7 cams won`t fit a ME7 engine.

So, if you just blank off the VVT solenoid ports, will that stop the cam adjusting its timing?

So, if you just blank off the VVT solenoid ports, will that stop the cam adjusting its timing?

There are a few trains a thought on this,

1.just unplug the solenoid,
2.blank the solenoid off,
3.blank the solenoid off and manufacture a new pulley.

I`m going for the 3rd one :)

Nice too see another project gets brushed under the carpet.

The me7 engined 850 is a rare site here in the UK.

It looks like its a bit radical for the shiny shiny people.

There is a cliche within the forum that certain people can post up that they've cleaned a wheel nut & they'll get 3 pages of people "well done, good job" etc. If your doing it to get peoples admeration & congratulations your doing it for the wrong reasons

TBH Rob, what you're doing I beyond most people's ability/understanding, so most people won't post, as they don't think there's anything they can contribute.

Yes it is a 2.4 from a auto, so the engine hasn`t be worked to hard :)

The ME7 head's freer flowing though isn't it? MAybe Rob want to take advantage of that fact.

havent got a clue tbh, i do know that when Tim does my engine swap to the S60R engine he is using my existing head to delete the second VVT

From the factory, I do believe the ME7 head does flow a 'little bit better' than the Pre-ME7's. But if you're going to the hassle of building an engine, surely you'd port and flow the cylinder head anyway.

As DR, my 850 will be having an S60R bottom end and an 850 head.

The heads are interchangeable, the me7 iirc flows approx 30% better with its smaller valve stems and it's reshaped valve / inlet area, also the me7 has 2.5 kg lighter crank, so less rotating mass making the engine rev easier.

Plus you can use coil packs on the 850 and there are attachments for them on the me7 head and depending on which engine you use it may be semi forged / uprated.

So taking that into account, then it's a no brainer as a small mod the the vvt cam pulley and that's it (dependant on engine) no need to take the head off, the Americans have been doing it for years.

Another advantage is the oil cooler on the sump meaning you can run a larger radiator, with out oil cooler for the engine, which can be upgraded to a d5 version.

I see no need to use an 850 head at all, several Americans are well in excess of 400 with this set up.

The ME7 head definitely flows much better.

Putting a 850 head on a ME7 block seems the wrong way around to me.

The yanks are years ahead of us on modifly and fitting ME7 engines into 850`s

I`m going to do a cold compression test on the engine tomorrow,
If the compression is 100 psi + then the head will removed liners shimmed and forged rods fitted.
In the end I`ll end with a fully forged engine (rods + pistons )

Not to sound like a numpty - but I've got a 2.3 ME7 lump from an '02 T5 - do I just need to blank the VVT solenoids & I'm away for a straight swap into the 850?? Was my understanding it was a bit more complicated than that - will do a bit of research on the US forums. What are the advantages of the later 2.3 lump? Any help gratefully appreciated, Cheers, Morgan

p.s I have always enjoyed reading your engine threads - just way over my payscale to make any useful contribution. Keep em coming though!

I bought a ME7 R engine from TC. I was going to use the bottom end from that, Use My M4.4 R head and have it ported then use N/A cams.
The ME7 engine in a 1999/2000 comes in 2 formats, hydraulic lifters with 6mm valves, and solid shimmed lifters with 7mm valves.

Going on the number of the engine I've got, it uses the same valves and lifters and the 4.4 head.

By the look of your rocker cover, You have the 7mm valves with solid lifters. I hate faffing shimming solid lifters, Fit everything, measure gaps, re-shim. I did a couple of late Zetec engines that used shimmed lifters, the were pretty straight forward as the cam caps were not parts of the rocker cover.

I don't know what to do with mine.

I thought the hydraulic lifters came with the 7 mm valve stems...

Speaking from my own experience of a ported M4.4 head (on original 2.3 block) with N/A cams, the porting & higher lift doesn't make a massive difference but does complement other mods. I do need to adjust the cam timing tho.

If you are going for massive power then it's worth researching but I would leave the ME7 head on & cams in, unless you can't live with the VVT for some reason

It does!

Also solid lifters and 6mm valves are always VVT whatever but if you are hydraulic .......the hydraulic bucket from after autumn `97 is the improved one which empties the oil quicker to give a snappier valve shut......

So if your mixing heads don`t use the earlier lifter from the 850T5 use the one from The B5234T3 onwards......

I`ve had a very productive day out in the garage working on the ME7 engine.

First thing I did was fit a old M56 gearbox so I could do a cold compression test, 120 psi balanced :)

Then the head was removed so I could fit my forged rods.

Here is a quick sketch of the catch tank that I`m going to use.

The centre 1/2 bsp port is the breather from the block.
The 3/8 bsp port will be for the head.
The other 3/8 port will be for future mods :)

The port at the bottom will go back to the block to allow the tank to drain back into the sump
And the top port will be connected to the turbo - maf pipe, at this moment in time I`m going for a 3/8 pipe but this mite get reduced down to 1/8 pipe.

All the parts for the VVT delete have been manufactured along with a few other bits and bobs.

The blanking plates for the cam cover where water jetted out of 3mm stainless.

I only needed one but it looks more pleasing on the eye with two blanking plates.

Thanks, the breathers are 3/8 bsp but the hose tails reduce it down to 1/4" and I`m not 100% happy with the hose tails.

I`m toying with the idea of using AN 6 fittings.

Yep, I'd be inclined to go with the AN fittings I think, but I'd probably go AN 8,which I think is 1/2"

There's a trick to removing a stuck filter canister. I had to do it with Graham's one.

Wrap a jubilee clip with tape and tighten half way down the canister, with the screw-bit about an inch from the sump. Then use a screwdriver, levered off the sump to crack the seal on the canister. It'll then just unscrew. :)

I had no idea you were looking for one fella - I've got a good one sitting in the garage. Complete inc solenoid 's. Came it's part of a V70R lump I picked up a while back - I only need the internals of the bottom end. Sods law, you could of had it for peanuts!

Cheers, Morgan
