Why not?! LOL! It's something I've been considering for quite some time now, and when this one came up for sale locally, I had to have it. It has pretty much every option including a sunroof, and even the electric rear blind. Full BMW history, 84k on the clock, very nice condition (not showroom by any stretch, but still very nice). However an Inspection 2 is due now. But at £9k I considered it to be a pretty decent bargain. As a general rule, after months of looking at these, you need to be in the £10k+ range to get a good one.

The list of improvements to the asthetics has already begun! I absolutely love black cars, so this made the car even more perfect for me, but it does make stone chips, scratches, etc quite obvious, so a front end respray is a definite.

The modifications list has also begun. Not too long, but long enough! Have you seen how much a decent exhaust system is for this thing?!!

And the noise :jaw:

Can't wait to get it on a track, but god knows when that'll be, I'm up a wall with work at the moment!

Bloody gawjus mate, drove a few of these in anger on tracks, and there aren't many cars as capable for all occasions, they are a handful in the wet with the nanny systems off, so be careful at first, they are very predicable on the limit, so have some fun. And you are now officially a ££££££

Ettienne
Saturday 9th August 2014, 15:30
You can't deny the ability of these cars and as an all round package they possibly one if the best, with the prestige to boot.

I'm looking at something non volvo myself, maybe 3 pointed star?

A good buy, only downside not as exclusive as some Volvos in numbers, but that's why I'd keep Volvos and you'd most likely keep yours.

Are you replacing the s60r with this?

S70T5Chris
Saturday 9th August 2014, 15:33
The plan was to replace the Accord with it, and this will be the car I mostly use on track. But I really love the Accord, I just don't know if I can sell it yet.

I need to do a couple of track days first just to make doubly sure. The ATR is so good, and so reliable on a track. This needs to be the same, I'm sure it will be.

Not heard many horror stories with these.

I was recently looking at a m5 2001 model (which ever that is).

Vanos timing goes around 100k, clutch 80k, so I was looking at buying with these done.

Only thing I could get around was, when cold most will not select first or second easily, I do short traffic trips mostly, that would be a pain in traffic.

Mate of mine had a very similar one, 2006 but it was ruined by so called technicians getting the stage 2 service wrong.

Mike was a big help in that matter and my mate is now looking at 335i and newer M3 as a replacement.

The only Beemer I would want, the M3, nice buy Chris mate.

Big fan of the m3's mate.
As said they are a handful in the wet.
Nice car, you'll have some cracking track day fun in it.

I looked at the M5 before getting my M3. Drove a couple and they really fly, but also a heavy car so not as chuck able as the M3. V8 5 ltr engine so 20mpg, but 10-15mpg on traffic trips.

Drop it off at mine if you want Chris while your away. I'll give it a clean for you. I've done lots of little creature comforts to mine to make the interior more up to date, latest satnav discs, full iPod control, digital tv, shorter gear knob to make gear changes better, software to personalise things like making adjustments to satnav view, shift lights, traction control intervention, light on control etc etc.
As for exhausts, what make did you go for?

Hmmm definitley need to pick your brains all all that kind of stuff!

Not decided on the exhaust yet. I need to get on M3 cutters and get opinions. They just sound incredible with a back box on. I'm leaning towards the Supersprint Race, but have heard it may drone, which I really don't want. Miltek is cheaper, surely a Miltek would be good?!

Thanks for the offer of cleaning it mate, I wouldn't expect you to do that! The stone chips on the front end are already bothering me, so really want to get that addressed before I go mad on it.

The brake upgrade you have, is that a complete kit you can buy from somewhere?

Have you heard of Brystone? They are local to me, was thinking of giving them a call for the Inspection 2 service, and a general once over.

All of them drone which is why I've not changed mine yet, the drone between 2000-3000 rpm which is 6th gear doing 60mph lol. I did have a Miltek to go on paid £575 second hand but sold it on.

Only used Iridium Engineering which is still close to you.

Brake kit is a full kit apart from discs which are direct from BMW. The kit was a group buy but the custom brackets have all sold now and unless the guy who organised the group buy can get another 10 buyers together you won't get them. The group buy included, calipers, brackets, hoses and pads. There are aftermarket kits available by the likes of k-sport etc but the quality has been bought into question especially the material of the calipers. The ones I have are o.e BMW ones made by Brembo off the 135 models. Your loaded mate so just get the A.P's, there only £2500 lol.

18's give a far better ride and handling is also a lot better, but the 19's look so much better. If Chris is going to track it once in a while, I'd suggest picking up some 18's just for the track.

Ok, so the ball is fully rolling with this new project!

The car has been into the local specialist (Brystones) for an Inspection 2 service, brake fluid change, and air con regas. They have also been over the car with a fine tooth comb. And listed every little thing down to missing trim clips, perished door seal and other odds and sods which will all be getting sorted shortly.

Sub frame given clean bill of health, which is good.

I've been building a shopping list, and researching the best place to buy parts. It's rather long, but you know me, I don't do things half cocked! Just put a deposit down on these among other things that I'll post up about once it's all fitted :biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::bigg rin:

And you thought your brakes were big......

They should stop you very well indeed.

Are these from above link or a complete kit?

I looked at putting 6 pot cayenne calipers on the Volvo

S70T5Chris
Saturday 30th August 2014, 17:37
They're not the brakes from the link Mike posted, no.

The fronts are the Brembo Grantourismo 6-pot kit with 380mm discs. As far as I can tell, the ultimate brakes that the E46 can have fitted. They're 2000 miles old, and cost £4k new!!

The rears are Porsche Boxster S calipers, and use the OEM M3 discs.

There's a chap on M3cutters putting his car back to standard, and I'm buying a few bits from it

I've actually got the m3 this weekend & poo came out on a wet roundabout leaving work this afternoon. TC back on. Lol

The chap who is selling the brakes also has KW Variant 2 coilovers, so I'm running with them. I was going to get new Bilstein B6's and H&R springs as a compromise. But @ £800 for the V2's I couldn't say no. They ride superb on the Volvo's, so I can't see how they'd be any different on the bimmer.

Also getting H&R anti roll bars from him.

S70T5Chris
Saturday 13th September 2014, 16:26
Whilst I'm on a roll updating project threads! LOL....

Dropped the Bimmer off at Brystones this morning to work through the list of niggles they kindly drew up for me! And also have all the goodies fitted that have emptied the kids piggy banks!

Renew glove box latch
O/S door trim panel - replace missing clips
Renew both front door aperture seals
Replace N/S door mirror glass
Fuel filler cap retaining strap
New front ride level sensor
New rear to front brake pipes (fuel tank out jobby!)
O/S headlight washer adjust or possibly renew
Renew a coolant hose (slight misting of fluid)
Investigate presence of oil, around the timing chain tensioner

Then fit....

Brembo Grandtourismo front brake kit (6 pots & 380mm floating discs)
Porsche Boxster S Brembo Rears, utilising my OEM discs
Supersprint Race backbox
KW Variant 2 coilovers
H&R anti roll bars
Linea Corse wheels, 9j fronts and 10j rears, correct offset to clear brakes and fill the arches without spacers
+ Michelin Pilot Sports CSL sizes (265/30/19 rears, 235/35/19 fronts)
Wheel stud conversion
Genuine BMW CSL bootlid
Genuine BMW CSL rear diffuser
Brand new headlight lenses
Depo black front indicators
Black front grills
Carbon fiber front wing grills
Smoked rear LED lights
Depo smoked side repaters

I can't wait to get it back!!

Next on the list is a few ICE upgrades. Upgrade the BM54 amplifier to give more power, and better quality sound with the HK set up. Also upgraded to allow bluetooth streaming. An intravee 2 and Alpine KCA-420i to give full ipod integration. Also add the OEM bluetooth handsfree system (this is pretty much the only option my car didn't have fitted from the factory).

Got the car back from Brystones on Friday. To say I am pleased would be a massive understatement. I am absolutely in love with this car now.

Gave it a polish today, for the first time since owning it! The paint has come up real nice, but would really benefit from a proper paint correction detail. The pictures don't highlight how badly stone chipped the front is, but it is! So respraying the front end is next on the to do list!

I am so pleased with the exhaust. It's not too loud at all, there's no drone, and it looks and sounds incredible!

Actually the carbon csl air in take and map sees about a 20-30bhp increase. Generally a standard m3 dynos at 320-30bhp.

Me too matey, just like I was saying the other day.

Cars like the M3, Audi R's etc never usually do much for me. Probably in the same way that Lambos and Ferraris don't either - because I know deep down that no matter how hard I work, I'll never own one.

But this M3 just ticks all the right boxes and I can't help but admire it for what it is - an awesome, customised performance car.

It looks superb mate, excellent work :D

It doesn't mate, certainly not to me. I haven't given that impression have I? Apologies if I have.

No Chris not at all, I was referring to Mike.
It's great you use high end mods & your car is to a top standard.
It's even better you don't brag about it & knock people for having low value cars. ;)

^^^what Biff said

The m3 is a beauty, I for one am interested to hear about any marque that forum members drive - performance or not. Not everyone shares this opinion but if a car costs me a fortune then I like it less! My T4 was a few hundred quid and it is great!!

When I first bought t5r's / 850r's they were, real q-cars and extremely cheap to buy and where such good fun and very cheap to tune if working around the standard turbo and brakes.

This has definitely moved on now with prices going up, but they are still a rarity to see on the roads.

There certainly is a point in tuning cars where diminishing returns occur, the level Chris's car is at, is certainly there. It costs a lot to get that bit more performance, but it's very nice to see a petrol head tuning one of these as most are owned by people who want to tail gate me on the motorway.

Sorry Biff, that wasn't my intention, I was taking the Micky out of Frankies DIESEL Volvos that he buys for £200 each. I love T5 Volvos which is why I've had an 850t5r and a C70t5.

the point was..that ive bought 3 broken diesels all non runners for around 250 quid each then managed to repair them and now theyre all on the road fully taxed mot and insured and running well, how much have i saved if i was to buy them fully working?

You mike are just a snob and think you're better than every one else and because your car is worth more then it's ok to look down on people, you have belittled my cars, my house and my home, enoughs enough ok. people on here are obviously starting to see what a plum you really are and will soon be put in the current jamest5 category if you don't stop sounding like someone with his head up his arse.

On a serious note Tony, if that's how I come across to the majority of people on here then I honestly do apologise. You and I don't like each other, and as far as I'm concerned you give me as much stick as I do you about our cars. Look at your latest comment on this thread alone, " at last a proper M3 to look at ". My latest comment about your cars was a tongue in cheek remark about the cheap runabout diesels you have just acquired and this was only posted in response to the above comment you made about the M3 so it's just banter in my opinion.
As for being a snob, that couldn't be further from the truth. I'm a working class guy who's a manager for a small independent chain of car shops lol.

A Little update.

The car is booked in to have the front end resprayed late Dec/early Jan. Bumper, bonnet, wings, blended into the doors, headlight trims and wing mirrors.

It's just come back from Brystones to have a new passenger door switch, which was playing up, and kept making the alarm go off! I bought a new Bosche S4 battery for it too.

I've had another steering wheel retrimmed from Royals, perforated leather sides, alcantara top and bottom with M stitching. He's also making me alcantara gearstick and handbrake gaitors, which should be with me next week.

I've received some new pedals from Pedal Haus in the states. They is uber sexay!

New Boot, bonnet and side vent monochrome badges!

And got me some new M embossed interior mats LINK (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/291294002611?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2648&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT) Incredible quality considering the cost!

Just need to fit it all now!

Gave the M3 some loving today as well.

It went through it's MOT last week without a hitch. And I had the new steering wheel, handbrake and gearstick gaitors fitted.

I fitted all the new exterior badges and mats today as well. I'm looking forward to getting the front end resprayed now. It's going in on 23rd Feb. The I want to get a full paint correction detail done.

It's very pleasant. In one way I wish I got the alcantara on the sides, as it feels lovely. The only problem with that is, after a while it'll look ropey, so I guess I made the right choice.

Got the M3 back yesterday after having the front end resprayed. Absolutely chuffed with it. It's looking properly mint now. I'll get some piccys up once I get chance to give it a going over. Within the next couple of weeks hopefully, busy working away during the week at the moment, so being able to spend time at the weekend cleaning the car is a bit awkward.

Having said that, managed to find a bit of time today to fit various bits and bobs I've been collecting!

Fitted upgraded BM54 amplifier - Stage 2 upgrade, 50w RMS (20w factory). Firmware upgrade also. Bluetooth streaming, and 2CH pre-out added so I can add an additional amplifier.
Fitted upgraded analogue TV tuner - Stage 2 Digital TV upgrade, and also DAB radio added. This upgrade also includes an added USB port for playing MP3's and various video files, as well as pausing and rewinding live TV.
Fitted Intravee II & Apline KCA-420i, allowing full I-pod integration into the factory head unit, amongst other things, With an I-pod dock mounted in the ashtray.
Fitted front cup holders & coin holder.
Fitted full LED interior kit - dome lights. map lights, vanity mirror lights, footwells, etc
Fitted LED boot lights
Fitted LED sidelights, front & side indicators also,
Fitted Pedal Haus pedal kit.
Fitted Lamin-X tinting film to rear lights - although not 100% convinced I like it!

Had a busy morning on the Bimmer. Gave it wash, and polish with Chemical Guys watsit namey, and then waxed with R222   Oh lord that stuff is amazing! Whizzed over all the black bits with trim gel, and even (for once!) did the door and boot shuts properly, and gave the engine bay a little going over!

I am absolutely made up with the paint work I've had done. I won't be as ££££ish to say that it's like it just came out of the factory, but it's not far off. To date, by far the best condition car I've owned, and considering it's 11 years old and has 85k under it's belt I'm very pleased.

On top of that, they are investigating a slight knock from the rear end somewhere, hopefully not the dreaded subframe issue!
