OBD fault finding

Hope someone can help here but I'm looking for a post that was put up a while ago showing how to get fault codes without a diagnostic device. Im having real issues with my R right now and the local garage couldnt read the ecu so im have to do it the old fashioned way. Cheers in advance

Ive just tried the above link and made a test lamp to try get some idea why my car isnt going but im having a bit of a problem.
I made the tester as described, tested it and the wires and LED all work but when I plug it into the OBD11 socket its lighting up but not flashing. Ive done as desrcribed but I just cant get anything, am I missing something or is it due to the non standard ECU?
Help lol
