View Full Version : Which coilovers?

Wobbly Dave
Tuesday 10th June 2014, 00:15
I've always been dead set against them for the harsh ride they give on the road, however I think my car has already passed the point of no return, where any aspect of GT comfort is lost, since going down the GTX route with the turbo.

Just thinking out loud really & wondering which brand to get. Should I stick with Bilstein? My Bilstein B4s are about mid-life/ perhaps a little over.

And the other think is I wanted a lower stance/centre of gravity.

I think its time I started tucking a little bit to one side and getting myself something like that, as the handling department is lacking something as present

I've got gaz golds on mine, they're past their best so the rides a bit harsh but when you unleash the beast it feels like the old car is on rails. Will be upgrading in the near future once funds allow & after much research will be getting a set of KWs. BCs get good reviews from those that have them & are good value, the gaz gold are good but a bit delicate for general road use & the KWs although the most money seem give the best of both worlds, reasonable comfort with great handling. I'm working on the principle you get what you pay for & it still only works out about £350 a corner for th KWs so not too bad :)

Get those BC Racing ones. Deans car certainly does handle!! It was the set I was looking at for mine purely for that reason.

Is there any reason to prefer the External reservoir ones ?

Dave I'm sure you remember my red R on KW's. ROFL. Trust me the set on my silver T5 are infinitely better than those!

The newer KW's on my silver T5 are different to the set on my red R. They have changed the design over the years deleting the helper springs and presumably changing the spring rating/design, I called KW to check they weren't missing and they confirmed they no longer come with them. The other point is the red R was slammed and ran 18's with 35 profile tyres. The silver R is lower than standard but not slammed and I run 235/40 17 tyres.

Greg had BC coilovers and is now running KW's. Food for thought!

I'm at the MRG/T5D5 track day at Castle Combe next Friday, come on down and have some passenger laps. That invitation is to everyone on here as well. :eclipsee_

Greg had the original V1' BC's though. Not the same as the BR series.

I had the BR series BC Coilovers on my S70, and that is what I'll be fitting on my 850. Incredible value for money, they work extremely well, and the ride comfort is not overly compromised. When you take into account the new top mounts (fronts are camber adjustable), @ less than £700, they are a steal.

If money isn't a consideration, the new style Variant 2's are the daddy. Whilst maintaining superb handling, Mr Williams commented that on a day to day basis they ride just like a new modern car on the road. So I suppose you couldn't ask for better. But once you factor in new top mounts, they are over twice the price of the BC's. As much as I piss money away on my cars, it's not worth it IMO.

Can only back up what Redbrick said, i have KW v2s set at a sensible ride height with them 1/4turn off full soft and there spot on, normal driving you'd never know the car was on coil overs, we've done some lengthy trips to europe driving for 20+ hours and even on poor sections of Spanish motorway its never been comfortable and certainly not harsh. As for handling its like driving my old track ready Saxo just a bit longer and heavier.

I can't remember TBH Pete.

I seem to remember that the first couple of sets they sent out as the test had a couple of teething problems, and they were also the not so good V1's, not the BR series. I had a set of the BR's on the S70, did loads of track days, and never had one problem.

Any takers at 599? Personally I'd sooner pay the manufacturer the 615 given that I can be confident that I getting the genuine article.

I thought that would be unwise to upset the relationship between the main dealer & supplier?

It would be 615 with a 10 week wait and we need 8+ people interested though, what wait is mad motors and what was the group buy numbers or is it just a straight discount and why can a 3rd party do a better deal than the manufacters. I'm interested in 599 or 615 to be honest but I dont want to wait 10 weeks as my current setup is already causing damge which is the reason for wanting to change but I dont want to wait to long and have to pay for a repair when i will be replacing the setup anyway

The amount of expected VPCUK procrastination I think it will be more than 10wks. Find me 8 people willing to buy - that's where the main issue lies.

what was the mad motors group by qty was it 8+ or was it just an agreed discount price with no numbers dependent, I'll be looking to place an order somewhere between now and the end of the month, I have the cash as i was going to order a intercooler and downpipe but will get these instead as my current setup isnt great and I dont want to keep having to repair the strut mounts and spring seats.

I believe it was numbers dependent, but I can check.

You can't get them for 550 - you can set notifications on threads.
