Well she's arrived, this car I just bought on hearsay and didn't even bother going to have a look at it before handing the cash over (didn't even haggle) and I was well surprised when it arrived as it was better than I thought it would be for 217,000 miler, just got to sort the rear diff issue and mot her (most of the mot work has been done by the bloke's garage, before he decided to get shot of her) Oh and as you'll see she has a bgr autogas conversion on her........lucky me cheap 850 motoring he we come...

apparently it was serviced 3 months ago with all sorts of new parts, just waiting on the paperwork to see whats been done to her lately as the previous owner was a bit o.t.t. with things for this car, but you would believe that if you saw the rear disc's

P.S are you going to york mate?

Yep get it back on the road and enjoy some cheap motoring and may be a bit of tuning, as Carl (Smithy) will no doubt be egging me on, as he's done some good stuff with the 2.5t ltp lump

Was just thinking I could have delivered the mirrors or pass them on to someone near to you, yes I'm very bad as I haven't posted them yet

Yes it's not bad, but needs a good going over, some nasty spots on the carpets in the front wells, but on the whole I think she'll sparkle with very little effort, can't believe my luck

needs dragging into the garage for a resto and flogging on, next to the white MGB is a yellow MGB that was stripped as a donor car a that is as rotten as they come and is destined from the scrappers in the next few weeks as it's taking up precious Volvo space...lol

only found two dings in her so far, will pop some pic's up after the bank holiday weekend, when I may have found a bit of time to give some paint correction and a good ole polish, she should scrub up lovely, but busy on the T-5R at the moment, getting ready for york

Thanks Jamesy, I had asked my local main stealer for a price a while back, told them it was an awd 850 and asked for a price for the rear diff oil, after a while he came an asked whether it was the gearbox oil I wanted, I said no it's the rear diff oil and he then replied, but there all fwd, call ended there....numpty or what, to be fair to him I couldn't give a reg or chassis no. at the time.

I found there was not much info when asking for parts for my 850 AWD. Plus some of the parts that were fitted to the x70 range made it onto the 850 AWD (like the steering rack/track rods had the bigger diameter thread which took multiple trips to the local motor factors to sort out)

Definitely a numpty, wouldn't take long to look up the model on their computer without a chassis or reg no.

Your right there Dave, I was on the phone long enough, that he could probably have looked up an obscure part no. on a space shuttle solid rocket booster with just 1982 Challenger as the info....lol

Is there a manual out there for the AWD's and R AWD's of some sort ?? or is it a case of learn as you go ??

Dangerous Dave
Thursday 17th July 2014, 19:14
Most info I got was from Volvo's service manuals, though that is sometimes wrong too. There isn't too much that you can't get around though, it's pretty easy for a mechanically savvy person.

Oh and the rear brakes have two types of pads listed too (just for the AWD), must have been changed on the later cars. Little bits like that, or accessing the fuel pumps is impossible without dropping the whole rear suspension and fuel tank or by cutting a hole in the floorpan.

So as I thought learn as you go then...lol.....I knew about the fuel pump lack of access for a while now and that that brake pipe are all hidden by the rwd diff/suspension set up, so has to be dropped the replace them too...!!

AWD has passed the MOT with flying colours and then has developed a naughty little petrol leak, somewhere in the region for the top of the drivers side fuel tank, that may not be to fun to sort, with all that awd gear in the way to see where it is coming from, my guess is a fuel return hose as it isn't a big leak, will get it over the pit later and have a look. I did enjoy my first real drive in her since I got her all those months ago, I don't think there is a rear diff issue, but there may well be an angle gear problem building, a few grumbles on the drives to and from the test centre.

Well she's no the road, and what a nice comfy drive she is too. But not without so niggles, as I was told when I purchased her , there is an AWD issue but it seems it me not the rear diff, but possibly the centre one. There's definitely some shot mountings and an oil change may help, but the problem isn't constant and a bit hit and miss to which turn it happens on. Will have her over the pit shortly to get to the bottom of this issue.

anyone have any advice as to servicing/testing the viscous coupling/centre differential and what oil (if any....lol) or service parts that may be required....??

Dangerous Dave
Wednesday 22nd October 2014, 23:09
I did have some info on that stuff, I'll have to dig out my backups and see if I can find it.

AFAIK the viscous coupling is sealed and shouldn't need maintenance other than replacing when faulty. There is also the freewheel device connected to it which should disconnect the rear wheels under braking (and I suppose should allow you to turn the back wheels when jacked up, though mine doesn't I think it may be fubared)

I've had her on the road for a week now, other than a vibration/juddering on turns, a front end drone (angle gear sleeve ??) and a small lack for grunt this car has amazing potential, phenomenal cornering ability and amazing stability, absolutely love it, just got to improve it and it will be the prefect daily hack....:)

Yeah, they do hang on :)

I used to get a vibration after a long drive (usually after driving a couple of hours to Llanidloes and turning right at the island in town), didn't find out what it was, seemed to come from the middle somewhere.

Got to be careful with the sleeve as they didn't epoxy it to the gearbox output shaft like they did with the later ones so it can possibly wear the gearbox splines too :(

Well major problem today, a petrol leak somewhere by the fuel filter, had to cut short my travel plans today and attempt to get her home asap, luckily I was running on lpg, but the tank was near empty so it was going to be which will run out first, as the petrol was pouring out and wasted approximately 4.5 gallons in a 25 mile run ......ouch, but being a Volvo she got me home, in the 9 Volvo's I've owned only one has failed to get me home (albeit twice in the same car) so not to bad a day in the end, just a little costly using two lots of fuel to cover the same distance
