View Full Version : Front Tyres Getting Cut on Full Lock?!

Got a serious issue that i luckily came across yesterday when putting new brakes on.
The car is on 17x7(?) with 205/50/R17 tyres on.
Seem to fit the car fine.
My steering lock has got less, but worst of all is were the tyres have cut away from contacting the bodywork.
Has anyone else had this, and what fixes are available??

This is pretty worrying, becuase i' looking at £150 or so for new tyres on tuesday and don't want these lasting like 3k miles like the old ones!
Looking at Maxxins MA-Z1's at the moment, depending if they have any
Might be able to fit (make) some wheel spacers, but extended wheel bolts don't seem to exist for Volvo's stupid wheel bolt pitch (seriously what's wrong with 12x1.5!)
I mean i've seen people run 19's on these car's, is the turning circle measured on kilometers??
As it is parking is a nightmare, but not unexpected

Have the rims you have fitted have the correct offset ?,there is something very wrong, did the car come with the rims fitted ?,what is the handbook say about the tyre size you should have fitted.
Has someone removed the steering stops.

Go down to 40 profile mate, or even a 45 will better than nowt, Ive gotta be honest Ive had 5 volvo 850's and 1 ph1 v70 and ph2 v70 non of them have ever suffered with the tyres rubbing on the inner arch in my ownership.

Are tyre's run at the right tyre pressure? may be worth while checking the wheel alignment to,

Big rotch 850 did but that was because some numpty was running 205/55/16's, as soon as they were changed to to 205/50/16's it was all good.

Looking at those pic's harvey may well be right those wheels look like they sit abit far into the arch to me, and there not standard ph1 v70 rim's either

Defo not right
Mine rub a little on full lock with 18s but never on the 17s
My way around it is getting some hubcentric spacers but as said above that looks wrong as tyre should never be that close

i thought the 50 profiles would be big but they're not bad at all, plus living in mid wales and a mountain biker i kinda like having 50 over 40 profile for rough roads and stuff
they came off a standard volvo though, and probably about the same as an 18 with 40 profiles on.
starting to wonder if they might be rubbing on something else too, some serious cut considering that on the car side it's only rubbing, not a sharp surface
something to do with thicker diesel wishbones or anti roll bar, i dunno. musing out loud
I've got some pegasus' in crap condition that i might throw some paint on and try out instead, they're dead popular so offset/width on them can't be an issue
Spacers are out though due to no longer wheel bolts

Long bolts aren't a problem :)

That's weird, the link doesn't go to web page I put up?

EDIT: This is the page I put up, and they do up to 35mm thread:

I am glad the page went wrong Lol as they are just up the road from me in Kent.

In your opinion do you think the spacers etc. on that wrong Link will be ok or should i go to the other proper link as they may be better quality parts?

I won`t hold you responsible if the wheels drop off!....but just wondered what you thought yourself because of all the meddling you involve yourself in with Volvo`s ...

The spacers on that link are fine, but the bolts they supply with them are mild steel with a cone washer, I almost lost a wheel with one of them on:

Not arguing at all merc, but i find that strange as i have the same motor but is 40mm lower and also it has 205/55/16`s on Perfos and does not touch anywhere!!

One good thing with that ratio is the speed is exactly in line with GPS.... 30mph on the clock = 30mph GPS and the same through out....

As you say the OP has the wrong rims on with the wrong offset...

interesting just a caphead bolt with a tapered washer?
I've got some ford 5x108 adapters, but i think i'll look at getting the other wheels on, even though they're in crap condition still

Driving to Germany at the end of the month so need to get the car all sorted!
