Going up from 18" to 19".... Question.???

Hey guys. Question time.

Im thinking about going up to 19" alloys from standard 18". I just went to get 4 wheel Laser alignment checked and mentioned that I was planning on going up. They guy said he would not recommend it as going up a size will mean a reduction on tire size making it easier to crack a new alloy as less tire on it to protect it. Plus he thinks it would be a less comfortable ride with less rubber on. Im currently running 235/40/18s. is this guy talking sense or can anyone who has done this say otherwise.

Think he's talking about keeping the same rolling radius so yeah if you go up a size on the wheel you need to go down a profile on the tyres size, ie.. thinner tyres means stiffer ride.

i've got 19's on the Bimmer (215/35/19) & even tho i admit i'm more tolerant than most, i really don't find the ride bad at all. Even the folks have never complained about it when they've been out, although they don't like the floor scrapping over speed bumps lol.

My main idea was to fill out the wheel arches a bit more but going up a wize wheel and down a size tire means the arch gap will stay the same as it is now so I may as well stay with 18s and just change the style... Im thinking of going for 5 spoke black wheels this time.. I get few up with cleaning grubby brake dust off so Black will be the lazy mans option lol....

I'm running 35 profile tyres albeit on 18" rims, but don't find they've made the ride any worse, though as the car's on coilovers the ride isn't that great anyway.

your going to have to lower it then :). I don't think black wheels will help, the wheels merge with the tyre making them look smaller

Also consider the effect of unsprung mass of the wheel , cornering hard , 35 profiles look great I've seen cars on 15 wich is mental thin , but yes potholes beware lol , try a basic lowering spring , or go with a coilover set for your car to allow you to drop the ride Hight and and gives you options for rebound dampening etc , I'm currently looking at dropping mind to get the same effect that you are after , as my arch gap is horrendous tbh

My C70 had 19's on when I bought her, but with the coilovers, making the ride too harsh for us. Also the blue steering lock stops made the already poor turning circle even worse, so I swapped to 17's so my mrs could drive the car. 19's looked wicked, but not practical imo, but each to their own............

Mine looked wicked, but kerbs scared me and the coilovers were on the firmest setting not helping to make the ride any better. I decided to part with them, and she went onto Titans for a while.

My C70 has 235's on it, and on coilovers as well, so you can guess what the turning circle's like. ;) Still better than the S60R though. I'll probably fit some 10mm spacers, just to improve it a bit.

The S60R but have a really poor turning circle then. I have a load of spacers here, but I'm not sure of the size/s, so I'll take a look in case you could use them.

Thanks mate, would be appreciated. Yeah, as MRP puts it, the wheels on the S60R don't turn, they just lean in the direction you want to go.

The tyres on my 19's were 235/35/R19, but the chrome 'lip' scared me to death when parking near kerbs. Bloody beautiful wheels though..............

mine are 215/35/19's, not sure what width the wheels are sit quite nice. Apparently 225's will rub

235/35/19, no rubs, no harsher than 18"s - Probably could do with being lowered, I thought about going 235/40/19" as I think they'd fit fine.
