View Full Version : Squeaky Steering Column? Read on for the fix..... :D

I've had a squeaky steering problem which often crops up with a gearbox or clutch change, most likely due to the need for the steering column to be disconnected and it upsets the set up near the firewall.

The steering was squealing like a pig, until this afternoon when I decided enough was enough and I'd get down and fix it.

Here's the cause.....

As you can see, the metal ring/grommet/bearing, whatever you want to call it pops out from under the rubber boot and then this allows the column to rub against it causing the squeaking.

The solution is to try and make the gap between the rubber boot and the column as even as possible, hold it in place and then push that metal ring as far down as it will go making sure the boot comes up the side of it all the way around. Once everything is back in place the problem is solved.

Once everything is back together, it should look something like this and more importantly the sound is gone!

Sorry to burst your bubble here James but...

The rubber boot is supposed to completely cover the bearing :shifty:

The lip on the boot needs to cover the top of the bearing. I'll get a pic of mine sometime.

James, if it's stopping the noise then like you say, happy days.

Bloody hell Steve - you need to get that clutch pedal put back on for your next MOT :)

Looking at the pics on a screen bigger than that on my phone, it does indeed look like the bearing is under the lip of the boot so apologies everyone, looks like I was wrong :slap:

One thing I would have done on those roller pin bearings is give them a little clean up with carb cleaner then lube up with some clean engine oil, before refitting the boot. The bearing gets very, very dry there.
