Plain and simple
1999 2.4 lpt c70 me7 auto

£30 in tank
Regular driving 64.2 mile return from it
That can't be right

Tuesday 1st April 2014, 21:52
That's about 12 - 15mpg judging by my own consumption of about £12 - £15 a day return to get to work and I do around 25 mpg for that.

Tuesday 1st April 2014, 21:54
£1.40 per ltr unleaded super £28 would get 20 ltrs, which is 4.44 gallons, so if your doing 20 mpg that will get you aprox 85 miles, id say summit is wrong

12.2mpg, thats not right. My 328 got 135miles to £30 (25.7mpg)

Knew it was crap but what things can I play with to try sort fellas

merc85

I'd say you have a leak,

Check, Injector seals, Fuel pressure regulator under the rail, Fuel filter under car they can rust through, Fuel tank pipes, filler neck (metal clamp) can rot through. Vac leak on the manifold Purge valve from charcoal cansiter, canister itself. fuel return hose/vacum to tank. condition of the plugs. Stupid question is the auto box getting into top gear?

Injector refurb, perhaps you have a MAF fault or another sensor so the engine is over fuelling. A session on Vida might be useful!

My manual C70 me7 T5 gives me upto 35mpg, and never less than 28-30 even when driven sportingly. Can't see the auto making such a big difference.

even tho it might not be throwing a cel light, read the codes. Also might be worth looking at changing the fuel filter

c70geoff
Tuesday 1st April 2014, 22:07
I'm not loosing fuel as in leak but seem to be burning or over fuelling
New maf on there no codes when read yesterday as for top gear not sure as I don't have time to get that far from home but doesn't like changing up or down when struggling sometimes

is the temp gauge reading correclty? 3 oclock position could also be a o2 sensor,

c70geoff
Tuesday 1st April 2014, 22:15
Temp gauge is mostly slightly under 3 oclock

O2 sensor mate, get the number and i will see if i have one here,my auto AWD used to get 16 around town, but even if yours was a cabriolet which are heavy, then that is still using too much fuel..

O2 sensors do play havock with economy but if it's that low is say a leak somewhere.

i would change the thermostat and sensor in the housing.
if the gauge is low, that sensor does the guage and ecu so it could effect fuelling.

Try a piece of cardboard down the front of the radiator, cheaper than a thermostat :)

well it was meant in jest. I did the same for years with my 440 in Norway. It does help with warm up so will improve the mpg until the 'stat is replaced if that is the problem :)

As said above could be the 02 sensor. My Volvo 460 auto had a cheapo one and was doing well under 20 mpg

My 960 only returned 10mpg when an O2 sensor went wrong and i had the error code up also with black smoke out the back!

Owners do not realise that just because an error code does not come up that all is well.......O2 sensors do wear and become not very good at there job resulting in poor mpg......the manufacturers of them state a mileage of between 60 to 100,00...........my 960 went kaput at 103,000.

Get the codes read first!

You can easily get 12mpg if you're just pottering around town or your local neighbourhood especially in an auto

Might be worth changing mine because my fuel economy is slowly getting worse. Thing is there are two lambda sensors on the P2 and they're around £100+ each!

If they bring the fuel economy up by 5 mpg they would pay for themselves in 4000 miles :) smart arse answer I know sorry but just saying worth doing

IIRC the front one is the one that matters - the second one only checks that the cat is working? I may be wrong but thats my recollection, so if correct you should only need to change the front one.

I think you need both tbh, but yes the front one does most of the work

As RT said, only the front one will affect the fuel consumption.

It will 99% be this, the car isnt getting upto temp so is running cold and rich hence your poor MPG.

Stat and sensor should cure it.

Get a Bosch front one from your local motor factors(rear one not as important), should cost about £100, if you cant fit it yourself get an independent to do it for an hours labour? My front one went and economy was terrible! Don't get a second hand one either! False economy, do it right first time!
