View Full Version : Map/304/ECU questions

I've been reading all the map/304 threads and am definitely up for having it done when money permits :D Sadly, a bent Volan and knackered tyre, due to one of the wonderful Suffolk/Cambridge potholes - and an impending leaky rad fix (plus blue pipey/stainless loveliness) have my spare cash tied up for a couple more months :pants:

However, a couple of questions for those in the know:

1. How much difference is there between an 96/7 850R ECU and a 97 V70 P1 ECU? If they are different software wise, can the V70 one be retro-programmed to become an 850R alike? My duff V70 has an almost new ECU, courtesy of the previous owner, which would be a shame to waste....

2. When an 850 has been mapped, does it still have three levels of gruntage, or are all settings equally "whey-hey"!!? :hbomb:

To answer question 1, the 850 has a M4.3 ECU, the early P1s have M4.4, it is possible to retrofit them, some will just plug and play others won't, it's a bit of trial and error afaik.

2 don't know what these "three levels of gruntage" are, the S60R/P2V70R 3 different sttings on the 4C which alter throttle response, but an 850 doesn't.

I think 850s and s/v70s have different ecu's - motronic 4.3 for the 850 and its 4.4 for the s/v70s. Its not possible to simply swap them over but i think in may be possible so that it can be modified to work............ i think i can remember, maybe, hybriduno was doing something along those lines??

Just the usual economy/sport/winter settings - do these become redundant after a map?

Nope, still work as before. Separate ecu's for the engine and automatic gearbox.

Ah got you now, you have an auto, all those settings do is change the gear change points in the rev range, obviously in sports mode it'll hold onto a gear for longer. This shouldn't change with a remap.

Yup, it's auto - I see I have much to learn :dunce:

....all those settings do is change the dear change points

I quite like the sound of these "dear change points" - does that mean I can swap my "old dear" for a new one? :D

The early M4.4 ( up to june 98 ( if i remember right )) will work in a 850, I should no :)

Haha, that's what comes from not reading what I've typed before I post.;)

No immobiliser issues?

No immobiliser issues?

As far as I remember the immobiliser was part of the ECU from june 98 :)

My 97 V70 M4.4 worked in my 850 no problem :)

Good to know then :)

Just remember, when putting a 4.4 in to a 850, the air con system will not work.

On the other hand, you will have better starting, and improved control of the turbo, as you can use the 4.4s turbo control valve, instead of the 850 boost control valve, I was told the difference, but I can't remember!

I'm having the immobilizer removed out of my 4.4, it will have launch control too! But, I don't think it will work on an auto :(

I use a tcv from a me7 v70 in my 850 with no problems

The Sport/Winter/Economy don't make much difference flat out - last time I checked Eco mode got a 15.3 and Sport 15.4 quarter mile at York. Sport can make it kick down more readily, which is not always needed with the extra torque from the remap.

A M4.4 will cause a MIL from the TCM when plugged into the 850-T5/R if it's an auto.
Manual 850 are okay.

oblark is correct with what he say`s in all his posts but i think the ECU will only go one way to work Ph1 V70 to 850 and NOT 850 ECU to Ph1 V70.

Depending what auxillaries are fitted it may not work them all.

As said immob. not affected until ME7 in `99 when then it is part of the ECU program same as the `98 T4 x40 and all subsiquent models

Of course there is a change over period so perhaps this is why some state June `98 but `cos it`s Volvo these are `99 models!

The later squarish looking TCV for the Ph1 V70 is the direct replacement for the round looking TCV on the 850 and works identically.......just have to watch the coloured hose connections!

It's a Motronic minefield! Guess I'll just save my V70 ECU for posterity - and get my 850R one mapped/chipped via a visit to HLM sometime in the not-too-distant future :D

Oh, and my bloody DS mirror glass decided to unlaminate itself from the backing today - and hit the floor, breaking into 5 pieces! So that's seven years of bad luck and a bit more spending money stuffed!!
