I've made a few changes, and I wasn't overly impressed with that dyno at Uxbridge, my boost dropped off as soon as it hit 1.2bar, but on the road it holds 1.2bar to the red line.

dont be so stupid. a volvo will never be a classic. how many classic volvos are out there now. never going to happen. even a poxy fiesta xr2 is more of a classic than the 850 thats famous for being a jews car. ive never been gulable enough to think the s60 is going to be a future classic. just better than the chocolate 850 that keeps breaking down

they give you the ability to run more power, and he has an mbc so has low down boost, if you can get a 2.2 60ft then thats all you can do, race is done in the 1st 60ft

thats because you have a huge turbo that you dont seem to want to exploit, get it mapped properly by someone who knows how to do it and get it turned up to 2.5 bar, your car is no quicker than a 19t'd motor at the moment

dave wont need to run stupid boost to make good power on that engine. the airflow in and out that engine will have very little restriction so the boost dosnt need to be sky high. 1.4 bar on a well set up engine will make 400 bhp easy

why buy that turbo then, when a smaller one would have done a better job? that turbo is rated at 600bhp,

Do i realy need to explain it. Theres many reasons. Most are obvious to me effiecentcy comes to mind.why have a small turbo going flat out and temps going through the roof and there for loosing power. Having been in daves car i wouldnt say its laggy either. Dosnt spool as quick as a k24 but not many turbos do

thats because you have a huge turbo that you dont seem to want to exploit, get it mapped properly by someone who knows how to do it and get it turned up to 2.5 bar, your car is no quicker than a 19t'd motor at the moment

hang on a minute - I only had that engine 10 minutes - with a massive learning curve and issues to overcome, before it let go. there was certainly no lack of ambition on my part. When it let go after only 2500 miles I think it did me a favour - because I have been able to address issues which bugged me the 1st time around
If anything this year - personal circumstances more than the car may yet prevent me from putting up a fight.

But that wasnt my point. the point is the 60' is not the race winner. You got to be able to put it down all the way up. If you line up Dean's and my best ticket - its the 2nd 16th mile where I was losing out.

GTX3071R turbo may support up to 560 bhp on medium displacement engines. FYI 2.5 bar is way outside it's efficiency envelope.

Frankie just bandies figures like chimps running a bar. Lot of noise & little accuracy.

Dave just ignore it take it slow and gradually turn it up other wise you will end up breaking it, no offence to frankie but if I were you I'd rather have a car thats fast but reliable than one that is a few miles off of breaking, its 2 different worlds frankie has the 1 race engine mentality which doesn't suit your project requirements of it also being a daily driver

Thanks but I don't actually agree - well not exactly. Frankie is right to a point - I didn't show that well last year.

So I start again. All the money I've spent is pointless unless I can produce a competitive car come May/York.

My project mentality is that I accept that while I am trying something new, pushing the envelope, a bit different - I accept the lack of reliability. I have the luxury that I don't rely on this car to get me anywhere.

It was a really disappointing to end up with a PB in 2013 & a broken engine.

I've sunk a fair chunk of reddies into this & it wasn't to have a fast road car. I guess the true irony lies in the fact that refuse to sacrifice interior and A/C to achieve this goal.
Although - if this goes bang - I am done - I won't rebuild a third time.

Anyway, Good Luck everyone for 2014 - Dean I'm coming to getcha!!

for your engine to go bang was just bad luck. possibly a error by someone who had built the engine the first time. guess well never know and it dosnt realy matter now. garrets turbos on a t5 arnt a new thing though. theres loads out there just not many in the uk. its no secret that the 2.3 t5 internals are made of chocolate but youve replaced the diary milk rods and pistons. if you were to chuck a even bigger blower on im sure it would take the abuse for many years to come. but the suporting mods youve bolted on mean that high boost isnt required to achive good bhp. just a good map to bring it all together so it all work together as a unit. will you beat dean is another question. i still thing his suspension set up plays a huge part aswell as avery good map

That's not quite accurate mate, the later ones are much stronger, it's just the 850's that seem to have chocolate rods. Dave's engine failure was very strange, as he pointed out the other day when we were chatting via Facebook about it, he'd given it the beans all day long at Santa Pod, and not had a problem, it was only on a saunter home after a stop off on the way home that it let go. That has to be the hardest thing, not knowing why it failed, it's easy if an engine lets go on a run, but not on a gentle run.

there was no way to know - could have been me - could have been a mistake in the build. Just dust myself off & start over, do it better then next time.

The rule is simple. Proper mapping wont bend rods. But that generaly means a custom map not off the shelf rubbish.
