Looking forward to getting some proper times with traction, I reckon this could be the place for a under 14 1/4, as I read the other day a standard S70 t5 will do the standing 1/4 in 14.9 at 96 mph!

Is there still a picture, on their website, of the start line marshall putting a fire extinghuisher over my engine ?
I'll probably come along, however the T5 will be confined to towing duties, as it'll be our last test before the start of the British Hillclimb Championship.

Hamish.

not sure about Avon but at the pod it costs £10 to get in then £15 to sign on. Don't forget your driving license & i've been told you need to wear a crash helmet at Avon

Mrsmopp
Saturday 5th March 2005, 14:25
I doubt very much they are going to make people wear a crash helmet for a RWYB day Pedro - after all how many car owners do you know that own a crash helmet?????

I will check all details direct with AP before we go tho.

Mrsmopp
Thursday 10th March 2005, 15:13
An update guys!

I have spoken to a nice lady at Avon Park to confirm details.

Saturday is the better day to go as there are longer track hours and less people attend (apparently).

Racing starts @ 10am (so please get there before 9.30am) and ceases at 6pm (a full days racing!!). Gate fee is £10 (on par with SP) and sign on fee is £15 for as many runs as you wish (on par with SP).

Helmets - yes they do require them (although she was a bit wishy washy about it so she may have got that wrong) but they do have a supply that can be used for those that dont have their own.

x

siamblue
Thursday 10th March 2005, 17:07
Crash helmets wtf?
I don't really think they know the damage a ill fitting helmet could do to someone when sat in a car and the airbags go off.Broken neck i would expect,
I understand on high powered cars ala Pod anything over 100mph on the 1/4 (Which they are a bit lenient on)B
ut come on not for standard and slightly modded cars like ours,
Maybe its to do with their insurance :shifty:

Pedro - add me to the list buddy I'm coming with a couple of pals - see what mine can do now the airleak is fixed (Thanks to J & Dave).

She hasn't done a single run at the pod or anywhere else without a pretty bad airleak and got a 15.0 in that state, so would expect 14.5 or better now :dgrin:

Yes its true my car did run 4 13.6's, and no its not standard like when it run a 14.9 in pod, i've had rica re-mapp brand new 19T turbo 3 inch down pipe, cat back 2 3/4 inch system, itg panel filter new plugs and leads, 19T hasn't been set up yet, shock are terrible so by the 2nd of april hoping it will go a lttle bit faster to be honest.

Quality mate, I'm very impressed.

What was the 60ft and Terminal speed on your run? What sort of power do you reckon its putting out?

spesh
Sunday 20th March 2005, 21:23
Terminal was 104.28 and 60FT was 2.287, cant be much more than 300 BHp because the 19T hasn;t been mapped, hamish would not map it on friday as the car is leaking boost from somewhere, the boost should of been 1.2 bar, but was goin to .8 bar, so got to strip the air sysytem down in the next week.

Ross9
Sunday 20th March 2005, 21:38
Quality, good 60ft, were you using road tyres? Sounds like it was getting good traction, but Shakespear raceway is excellent for that, havent been myself but a load of mates went last year in an assortment of Jap modified cars and all ran well. Excellent strip by all accounts.

I reckon I'll head down for "rotorstock" in the Rover this year when its all up to full spec, thats at shakespear county raceway as well.

Has your car had any weight reduction? ie no rear seats etc? Sounds like it goes very well.

Rufe, it was a figure of speech mate, extreme one but i was making a point.

There were several 19t remapped cars last year, inc a C70 that ran a 14.3 best i think at santa pod, We will have to wait and see on the 2nd :)

Rufe

spesh
Tuesday 22nd March 2005, 17:03
Its hard to compare the tracks, i was in pod 9 months ago, but they glue the track even for RWYB days in stratford, where as santa pod dont, and the all the staff are great there, really friendlly and helpfull, but that doesn't have anything to do with performance.

Giles
Tuesday 22nd March 2005, 17:04

It's hardly the be all and end all - for a start it's uphill, but when every other car has been tested there - it's a good start?

Mrsmopp
Tuesday 22nd March 2005, 17:05

No we didn't even know of Avon until last year but it was a little late in the season by then so Santa Pod is all we have done so far. We are looking forward to a change of scenery!

Rufe
Tuesday 22nd March 2005, 17:18
It's hardly the be all and end all
my point exactly. just because spesh did a 13.6 at stratford it automatically opened up the attack from people doubting it. personally, i think its about right anyway, from the amount of work gone into it, gaining a second was quite justified. the car is now running a lot better than before, the proof was in the time.

Pedro Fandango
Tuesday 22nd March 2005, 17:31
the question comparing the drag strips has been going for some time now, what we are comparing is the fact that the best time ever ran at the pod is 14.3 (by a similar spec car to Spesh's) & then for someone to go to Avon & beat the time so easily has brought up the Pod/Avon question. No one is questioning Spesh car not being able to do a 13.6 (especially as he did it 4 times)

Rufe
Tuesday 22nd March 2005, 17:37
it will be good to see the times from the other cars with similar set up then at avon, possibly yhey will also drop into the 13's.

but my point is after seeing how much better speshs car is now than the last time it ran at santa pod, a second better would be justified in my eyes, at least.

Justin
Tuesday 22nd March 2005, 17:41
Rufe you have got the wrong end of the stick mate, NOBODY is doubting Damiems time, we in fact suggesting that there is a timing difference at Avon compared to the pod, its been a debate since last year as Pedro said :)

no i see what your saying mate, but my point is also that the mods carried out from the standard engine before could well be capable of a second difference. :)

a fair test on the same track would obviously be a better comparison, i understand that of course.

Justin
Tuesday 22nd March 2005, 18:13
Sure would mate, however, as stated before, the best time ever done by our lot was a C70 with a 19T and remap, i think it was a 14.3 @ santa pod, so either spesh's car is "Speshal" or there is a difference in timing.

I think personally its the latter, but we will see ;)

They were running a Pro tree at Avon on Saturday and Sunday. After racing at both tracks for several years, I would say Avon is the better of the two. They take more time to prep it, often starting on Thursday before any RWYB or large event. Santa Pod on the other hand, throw a bit of glue down on the mornings of RWYB. The only events they prep properly for are your summer nationals, where you see top fuel dragsters doing 5 second passes.

As for Pod being up hill, what a load of rubbish!!. There is also absolutely no difference in the timing of the christmas tree's at both venues. Both are used for FIA sactioned events, and are also used by the NHRA. Both trees are extremely accurate and are tested regularly. When you attend Avon in 2 weeks time, I wouldn't be surprised if you all see a slight improvement in your times. Also Well done Damien on your 13.6 second pass!!!! :)

welcome to the forum - you obviously have a lot of 1/4 mile experience? What do you drive?

its nice to have a comparison between the 2 before we get there, we have had many problems with the strip at the pod (especially being FWD) and we are hoping that better traction can be acheived at Avon.

As for the uphill thing - stand halfway along the track and have a look. I'll say no more than that.

A non road legal fwd drag car by the sounds of it, be interested to hear what it is though. Fastest road legal fwd time is 11.9 @ 128 IIRC by An racings rover engined Maestro, at Pod, and same car did 12.0 @ elvington not long after on the same spec.

I'm looking forward to seeing some Pod vs elsewhere comparisons, as any time I have had 1st or 2nd hand accounts of someone who has run at Pod, and then elvington, or Crail, on the same spec, there has been little to no difference, ie 0.1 tops. I cant speak for myself though as I have never run elsewhere yet.e

As for being uphill, I asked some people I know who run there, not uphill was the response, I've had the discussion on a volvo forum before so no point going over it again, I'll believe it when I see it.

I guess we'll see on the 2nd, I'll be awaiting the results :) Hope to see some more Volvos turning heads.

i've run at the pod and it certainly isnt uphill? if it is i didnt notice. may have the effect of appearing uphill as its looking at such a long straight road ahead, it may appear that way, but when your standing at the finish line it looks the exact same level as the start line? this is a whole new debate for me i admit.

Is this the daft turbo nova with HUGE front slicks I used to read about on MIG then. Reputedly bonkers fast, shame it's not road legal, doesnt matter to some folk, a fast car is a fast car, but I always like to distinguish as comparing road legal cars to what are in essence, race cars, isn't really fair. Still, an impressive car.

Rufe, yeah it was a new discussion for me as well when it was first mentioned, had never seen it mentioned by any other club or forum, or have done to date. All drag strips will look up hill from the start line I would imagine, Crail does, but I'm 100% sure it isnt.

Ouch on the file size lol.

I see the title is 13.6 and work, so its a vid showing whats done to the car, and then the now infamous 13.6 fastest modern volvo run?

Think the PC will need to be left connected for a few hours in order to get that downloaded, but I really do want to see it. No-one got a fiel converter? if someone coverts the .avi to .mpg then the file size will be much much less.
well its a big file size (21mb), but dont pay attention to the title lol, its simply a 15 or so second clip of the run (dont know why he put 'and work' in there lol)

im hosting it for him, but i have no way of converting it to a mpg anymore so just whacked it on my webspace lol (would appreciaite it if someone would convert it, taking up lots of room on my webspace lol)

Ross9, Roof and Pedro, and any other guys and gals

Here are 3 copies of that file.....
The first 2 are small file sizes, and not fantastic quality, and SHOULD stream,
If they dont, dont worry, they are only 900kb in size

Third one is a pretty big file, 11mb (but compared to the 26mb original!!)

Spech's Video - OK Quality, Streaming 320 x 240 (http://www.stevecunningham.co.uk/T5/med.asf)

Spech's Video - Better Quality, Streaming 320 x 240 (http://www.stevecunningham.co.uk/T5/hi.asf)

Spech's Video - BEST Quality, Big Screen MPEG2 (http://www.stevecunningham.co.uk/T5/full.mpg)

I am happy to leave them there for the time being, but feel free to save and host them if you want

Quality Steve, thanks for that, 3 min download vs 2 hours 30 mins plus

Car certainly went well, was shifting along, good rate of acceleration. Seeing is believing, proof is in the pudding etc, and there it was.

Congrats to Spesh on a quick car and a good run.

Hi Dave

I'm fine thanks, she's awaiting a throttle pedal sensor of some sort, tells the ECU how far down the pedal has been pressed :rolleyes2 .... she only gives boost with the pedal buried into the carpet at the moment, and even then she's not consistent :(

In answer to your text message last weekend re 30th April ... Yes Please, let me know the details in due course ;) :)
