I've noticed a heavy 'ticking' on the engine, especially after a cold start and I believe it's my tappets or hydraulic valve lifters that are in need of adjustment. I'll try and get a video of the sound and put it up for you all to listen to but I'm fairly confident it's just tappets.

Anyone else had their tappets adjusted, was it expensive?

Hydraulic lifters are not adjustable. If it is ticking then an oil well could be blocked.

could be injector noise if its from a cold start.

iirc your car wont have hydraulic tapptets they are solid but look the same hence the ability to adjust.
it is not normally required unless repairs are carried out, but your mileage is getting on a bit.

The R is quite tappety, but was told this is quite normal for the engine, a combination of injectors clicking, and just the fact it's an old engine design.

Martin has an ultrasonic bath to clean the injectors IIRC
