hi

ive been builing a 850 t5 engine really slowly at the moment due to other commitments anyway ive been looking at building a new cam cover out of carbon fiber i cant think why this wouldnt work but i would like some info if anyone has done it before

Volvo make one or at least used to, part number is 9166807......no idea if you can still get them but would look good

After some comments about the state of my engine bay from T5 Pete and Shepbomb - I tried to tidy a bit but my standard plastic one didn't brush up too well.....

Sounds like a brave thing to try - lots of potential problems.

these is a company I know of who have made the later cambelt covers out of CF, but they were too expensive.

ask martyn to cover it for you? he does a good job

It would melt pretty quickly and then it would stink...

there is a guy in usa who has built a full block based on a zetec engine out of carbon fiber i thought about doing the same but on a smaller scale like the cover i thought carbon fiber was heat resistant

Depends on the level of heat - get it too hot and the resin will turn to powder.

I believe normally for direct high heat they have a reflective/protective layer applied like the gold a maclaren f1 has in the engine bay # $$$$$$$$

the top covers we sell do not have any extra protection on them but I imagine anything near the exhaust will want it. presumably the resin melts not the mesh.

If this is for cosmetic purpose then surely getting the top of the aluminium CF dipped is a much easier option? And cheaper too.

Hydro dipped might work but talk to a few companies first and ask how heat resistant it is.

As for a solid carbon cam cover I think you would be in to thousands to get one right with plenty of scrap produced along the way, access to an autoclave and producing the mould wouldn't be cheap.

Then look in to dissimilar thermal expansion of carbon vs the alloy the lower part of the head is made from, get this wrong and the cams will tighten up leading to a snapped belt and ruined engine - Mike

They assure me that it's good to 250 Degrees C & it looks very nice imo.

I would have thought the cam cover is very unlikely to reach 250 degrees? Water cooled engine running roughly around 90 degrees? I thought about things like this - but cosmetic niceties can always be added later. I'd focus on getting your engine right first.

an engine's coolant should'nt get any hotter than about 115 degrees.
the thermostat opening at 90' is only halfway across the gauge.

the exhaust area is a different matter ......
