Never actually done a project thread before on any of the cars, so this will be a first!

As far as I know, this is the only White 855R Manual that Volvo sold in the UK, so when Cherry put it up for sale, I had to have it!!

She's rough round the edges, but a nice project to get my teeth stuck into (not that I do much of the work!).

Mechanically it all seem pretty well up together, goes as it should, no nasty knocks or bangs. It just need a new throttle cable (possibly the stiffest accelerator pedal I've ever felt!), a thermostat and handbrake shoes. They'll be the first little jobs just to make it easier to live with daily.

Cosmetics need work! Interior is pretty decent, apart from the drivers seat, which could do with being replaced ideally (anyone got a black 850R seat for sale?!!). The rest is all in good nick. Exterior wise; The paintwork is incredibly flat. A weekend of detailing would probably bring most of it back to it's former glory. But there's rust coming through on the tailgate and rear drivers side door. The lacquer has gone on the bonnet, so that need a respray, as do both the bumpers. I may just end up respraying the whole thing.

As much as I like Tritons, the wheels have to go, and i've already got a set of Volans lined up.

Mod wise, it's got a few already - Rica 304, OBX catback, Walbro Fuel pump, blue injectors, carbon airfilter box thingy, Electronic boost controller. It drives as it should, pulls well & brakes well. But once I've made my mind up which way to go, i'd imagine most of those bits will be gone.

Crap pics, sorry. It was getting dark when I took them earlier:

https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/913x685q90/132/7rgf.jpg

https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/913x685q90/12/7sny.jpg

Not sure where to go first - Mechanics or cosmetics? Technically it runs good, so the mechanics could wait until it's looking right. Although, doing the mechanics first would mean my main man Tim, wouldn't have to be too careful when working on it.

On where to go with the mods/tuning; at first I was going to just restore it to a mint original example, but I don't think i'll be able to help myself, so the chances are it'll end up with some hefty mods but we'll see.

I've got to say, it feels good to be back in a P1. As fantastic as the S60R is, all you P2 guys have no idea what you're missing!! Let the fun begin!

Fantastic to see this has gone to such a good home, I genuinely can't wait to see the end result as despite what route you end up going with it I'm sure it will be a brilliant job. One thing you must do, which isn't on your list, take that damn TDi badge off the back and fit the badge it deserves, as the only white estate it has to be badged as an R ;)

The R badge did come with the car! But can't be bothered until the tailgate gets replaced. But that won't be too long with a bit of luck. I'll stick up a load of wanted threads across all the forums shortly!

Thanks for the vote of confidence guys. I doubt it will ever be as nice as Frankies, but i'll try :D

If so, I very nearly bought it a few years back. Ended up buying the S70R instead.

Sourced a V70 tailgate, door handles and roof rails. And a set of Volans. Hopefully picking that stuff up Friday. Just need a drivers side rear door, and exterior door moulding for the drivers door.

The car is having a thermostat, throttle cable and handbrake shoes on Friday too, just to sort those irritating niggles out.

I think the first job will be to sort all the suspension out. Decided on going with BC 'BR Series' coilovers. I had them on the S70, they work very well, and are still sensible enough for daily use. Fully adjustable height and damping, and they come with all brand new top mounts, of which the fronts are camber adjustable, so for around £700 they're a bargain. IPD anti roll bars, poly bushes etc etc. Hopefully get that done in the next couple of weeks.

In the mean time, I think the plan with the body work is to mop the whole car and see where I'm at with the paint work. The bonnet, (new) tailgate, (new) door and both bumpers need spraying for sure. The rest of the bodywork is straight, and rust free, so if after a machine polish it comes back to former glory (which myself and my bodyshop guy think it will), then happy days, no need for a full respray.

I picked up a set of Volans on Thursday! So much happier with them on! In really nice condition too, so won't need to refurb them!

https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/913x685q90/23/tz9x.jpg

Also picked up a V70 tailgate, V70 roof rails, a decent rear drivers side door, new piece of exterior trim for drivers door, a load cover, an ME7 manifold and a Tim Williams ported Throttle body. So starting a nice little collection of bits now!

I also got hold of a mint condition wooden steering wheel, not to everyone's taste I'm sure, but I really like it. And it feels much nicer to drive with than the original steering wheel.

https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/913x685q90/13/1d1q.jpg

So I'm on the look out for a t5r suede gearstick gator, and wooden gearknob. But I have a feeling I may have to buy these new from volvo. Should hear back from Rufe tomorrow with a price hopefully.

On Friday it had a new throttle cable and thermostat. The handbrake just needed adjusting, so that was a result!

Had a good look underneath the car when it was on the ramps, and it all looks pretty clean, no rust or anything to worry about. The OBX catback isn't that old, but looks quite haggered, so I think that will be getting replaced when the downpipe does.

The only pisser is, it seems like the rear main seal is leaking, which is a bit of a pain. So I might jog the m59 on, and get an m56 and proper diff sooner rather than later.

S70T5Chris
Sunday 26th January 2014, 16:42
One other thing to mention, since getting the throttle cable done on Friday it's only boosting to 0.8 bar. The EBC is still set the same, which before was delivering 1.25bar. And no matter what you set the ebc to, it still only boosts to 0.8bar. I've had a look under the bonnet but can't find anything obvious.

Is there anything specifically that could have been messed up when the throttle cable was changed? Just seems like too much of a coincidence.

Luckily Darren had already fitted them! No chrome rings though! (yet!!)

I was thinking I might spray the grey background to the clocks black, I think it'd fit in better with the 850 dash then.

Do me a favour & give me first dibs on the original gear knob & gator if your getting rid - mine's missing the original, got an '8 ball' instead & it's gotta go!

Looks a cracking project, I'm doing something similar with mine, just finding the time & budget which are non existent atm!

Will do mate, it's not in great condition though. And I think there is a chance you have to brake the gearknob to get it off, but if it survives I'll give you a shout!

Don't be too hasty with the rear seal, I was assured it was changed when I had the clutch done :)
The oil filter was swapped a while ago as the seal went and covered most of the underneath with oil (hence the advisory on the mot :) )
I actually prefer the Volans myself, but the Tritons came up at a good price with tyres.

S70T5Chris
Sunday 26th January 2014, 19:29
It has a slight clutch judder too, which is a sign as well I'm told. There's defo oil coming from somewhere. It's not really a concern, as its all gonna get stripped out at some point once I know where I'm going with it.

I'm more irritated by the lack of boost at the moment. I'm pretty sure I'm not doing anything wrong with the EBC, any ideas??!

Ally intercooler coming from Blackbeast :-)

No worries - if it survives send me a PM. I can get a new one from RUFE for £60 but it will stand out a bit as the steering wheel & handbrake are looking a bit tired too, so your old one would fit in nicely, a bit of tlc & leather treatment & it should come up ok.

Now much better does it look on the Volans, I have to say I think the Volans should stay on an 850R as there isn't a better standard wheel. But then I am biased.

The wheel looks good and I've heard that it's better to drive with than the standard one. Maybe you could take the wheel to a wood specialist and have it stripped treated and refurbed if you fancy having it match the dash. Painting the clock surrounds black also sounds like a good idea..

I think you're right, I believe the wood that matches the wheel is the standard fit CD spec wood? Only difficulty with that is the wooden centre console as I believe the T-5R & R's are the only models with the wooden centre console trim that goes all the way to the arm rest..

Clutch has always done that (original was pretty knackered when I bought the car) and the new one was fitted 2 days before it went France. Not sure if they're supposed to have bedding in time or not.
Boost is an odd one. Cable tightened up right? I know I had to adjust settings when the catback went on, but can't see why a cable change would affect it :(

It is a weird one, and too much of a coincidence thats its doing it after the work. No matter what I put the boost controller on, it will boost to 0.8bar. Where's the controll box for the ebc located? I'm wondering if he went anywhere near that and disturbed something.

Ok, first off it had nothing to do with having the throttle cable replaced. It was just a coincidence. No matter how much I turned the EBC up, it would only boost to 0.8bar. So this morning on way to work, I switched the EBC off, and only got 0.3bar of boost, so 100% was looking at a boost leak somewhere, the EBC was having some effect.

The car has got an RIP kit on it, but its a proper collaboration of bits and bobs from here, there and everywhere (GWE kit on the way!)!

I had another good nose around, and spotted this. This is the section of pipe that connects to the top outlet of the intercooler to the top pipe, slightly buried under the slam panel which made the split harder to find!:

https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/514x685q90/560/6zf3.jpg

https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/514x685q90/850/mxd1.jpg

Luckily I had one of these in one of my boxes of crap:

https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/913x685q90/19/jh3s.jpg

Cut the wobbly johnson off it, and hey presto, we're back in business!

The current RIP kit won't be staying too long anyway, but I couldn't live with it the way it was. Standard boost is gutless!

The paintwork is absolutely dreadful, probably the worst I've ever seen. The plan was to machine polish it, at the bodyshop I use. But he's busy as hell, and won't be able to do it for a couple of weeks. Being an impatient sort I decided I'd have a go by hand.

The pictures are proper crap. But here is a before pics of the front wing, flat and gritty is how I'd describe it! The picture makes it look better than it really is!

https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/913x685q90/836/nry8.jpg

Don't know whether, this would technically be the correct process, but they way I played it was, clay bar the panel, then use the Meguires 3 stage jobbys - Paint cleaner, Polish, then wax.

https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/913x685q90/829/7hfh.jpg

Hard work, I've spent over 2 hours, and managed to get the passenger front wing, and passenger side front door done! Again the picture is total ££££e, but the result is amazing. I'm so pleased with the outcome, I can't wait to get the rest of the car done, and get the bits that need painting done.

I'm kind of collecting bits at the moment!

The first job is to get the BC coilovers fitted, IPD rear anti roll bar, poly subframe bush inserts, new OEM wishbone bushes, and new drop links. That'll see the suspension sorted.

I'm very tempted to get a set of AP's for the front, I'm just waiting on a firm price and lead time from Don @ Kalmar. They'll fit under Volans without spacers, they're expensive, but goddamn they're sexy!

That kit is an option, but I'm not a huge fan. It's a bit 'cheap' really, And the pad area doesn't cover the disc. I'm not sure how effective they are tbh.

It's had some iffy paintwork on the rear quarter. Can't really tell if I'm gonna be happy with it or not, the light in my workshop is ££££!

It's the most efficient system to have. I had the BSR Optiflow jobber on the S70. I liked the look and the noise. I honestly didn't notice an increase or decrease in performance on the road or track. But some of the guys on T5D5, have experienced the affects of heat soak on the track with a cone filter, and have returned to the standard airbox, which has solved the issue.

Guys on T5D5 running 400+bhp are using the standard airbox.

More polishing!

Got the passenger side finished, and the roof done (what a ball ache that was!), after another 4 hours of graft!

Just got the drivers side to do. I'm not bothering to touch the drivers side rear door, tailgate, bonnet or bumpers as they all want spraying.

Although once I've done the drivers side, I'll go round and do the door and boot shuts. I'll leave the engine bay until Tim has worked his magic.

Took in a decent camera, so hopefully gives you a better idea of just how good the paint work is starting to look. I'm surprised it's come up this good, I really thought I was looking at a full respray!

This is the initial plan, which should be done within the next couple of months or so:

BC Coilovers
IPD Rear Anti Roll Bar
New OEM Wishbones bushes
Poly subframe inserts
New droplinks
Pink ££££ engine mounts

Plugs
Leads
Dizzy cap
Rotor arm
Ignition coil
New BCS
PCV - Possibly, seems OK though.
Pollen filter
Fuel Filter
Fit new expansion bottle and cap
New cam belt
Oil change
Brake fluid change

Fit ported ME7 mainfold
TWR throttle body
18t with angled exhaust housing
Already have blue injectors & walbro fuel pump fitted.
Blackbeast Intercooler
AEM progressive water Injection + tank in boot
GWE RIP kit
GWE maf to turbo pipe (hopefully will have in time)
Reinstate original airbox + panel filter
Feritta 3" Downpipe
For now, keep the OBX cat back.

Kalmar Union/AP Racing lightened flywheel & clutch
M56 + Gripper LSD
(You have no idea how ££££e even an M59 is, until you drive a one with a proper diff! - It's gotta be done!)

Remove EBC + reinstate BCS
Fit new boost gauge
Fit innovate afr gauge
+ new twin gauge pod
Custom map

Cosmetics:

Clay/Polish - Underway!
Spray bonnet, door, V70 tailgate, V70 door handles, headlight trims & both bumpers - Got all the bits needed!
Fit front splitter - TC's nearly finished it!
Orange insert indicator lenses
HIDs
Tint windows
Egg Crate Grill - Ordered from PFV
New Wheel center caps - Got!
New gear knob
New drivers seat - Hopefully have sourced one!
New center air vent
New drivers side air vent
Spray washer jets - Ordered.
Bosche aerotwin wiper blades - Ordered.
New Glovebox tray

Once this lot is done, I'll see where I go.

Most likely on the cards is AP front brakes. I'm keeping my eyes open for the right calipers on Ebay, I reckon I could do the whole kit with new discs and pads for around a grand, but buying the components separately.

Then possibly a forged engine and turbo upgrade, but we'll see how it goes.

Holy moly that's some list im really wanting some better brakes for the t5 but want to keep the titans so they don't rub the liners but at the price for a full AP kit Its stupid money once you've sourced yours ill have to get you on the look out for me

Should be able to get second hand calipers for £3-400 on EvilBay. I've already sourced a set of adapter brackets. Discs from Reyland (which are better quality than the original AP ones) are £255 for a pair, and DS2500's to fit the right calipers are under £100. So just the bells to try and source, or may have to get some made?

Trouble is Frank, I am all or nothing. I initially had intentions of restoring it to a mint original example (like Bonelorry did with his Gul), but where's the fun in that?!! I can't help myself.

I'm fully aware I am mad though, buying all new stuff that I sold from the S70 a year ago!

Sounds like it's going to be a very we'll sorted motor, but can I ask why? Your old S70 was highly tuned and you had it for at least as long as I've known you and that's long gone now. Why go down the same route again in something which is basically the same apart from being an estate. If you have so much money to throw away, then you could always donate some to my M3 fund

I had the S70 for nearly 10 years! It went a year or so ago. But then just lately I've had the urge for another P1, I did miss it. When this 850 came up I had to have. It's one of the 3 855R's sold in white, and the only manual. So it's a rare car.

At the end of the day, buying cars, modifying them and tracking them is my hobby. The S60 is done. The ATR is done. I needed a new project!

Currently the only car I'd replace the S60 with is an E92 M3 or a Lexus ISF. Which I may do this year, but we'll see.

I haven't no. My uncle just got a Limited Edition 500 in Santorini Blue, and it is absolutely gorgeous. Haven't been in it yet, i'd imagine it's quicker than the S60, but even if it wasn't I'd still have one as a replacement.

Your Uncle's a lucky man. The M's an all round car, not just about straight Line speed. I'd be very surprised if your S60 would beat it in any area to be honest. They need to be revved to get the best out of them, but bloody hell they sound amazing when they get going. Are you looking at manuals or dct's?

Good progress again Chris, nice work.

I'm not convinced about the straight line performance between the S60 and the M3, having driven an E92 in anger I wasn't overly blown away tbh and between the two I prefer the more driver focused feel of the the E46 if given the choice between the 2 M3's

They're around 13.5 seconds quarter mile, so they're not the fastest thing in the world. I don't think there'd be a lot in it either way. And I've been faster on the track than a lot of 'fast' cars in the S60, and I;m not the best of drivers! But I agree, it's an awesome car.

These figures for a standard model.

delivers 414 bhp (309 kW; 420 PS) at 8,300 rpm and peak torque is 400 N·m (300 lb·ft) at 3,900 rpm, which represents a power increase of 22% over the E46 M3.

* 0-60 mph (97 km/h): 4.6 seconds for the 2009 E90/E92 M3, 5.1 sec for the convertible
* 1/4 mile: 12.7 seconds @ 183 km/h (113.7 mph) , Convertible: 13.1 @ 109 mph (175.4 km/h)

So although the M3 has 114 bhp more than a S60R (thanks in part to its much higher rev limiter) it has no more torque. :slap:

And considerably less torque than a tuned S60R ;) One of the reasons why the ISF is a good option for a replacement over the S60 too, it has a shed load more torque than the M3.

I don't wanna start bashing the M3, and defending the S60. As I said it's most likely the car I'll replace it with, there are no newer Volvo's that are worth any consideration.

I know what you mean Chris, they aren't Volvo's anymore, just a badge, with poor build quality with cheaply made parts that will fail within a couple of years, whereas Volvo's of old parts would last for years and 100,000s of miles.

Proper 993tt calipers ("Big Reds"), with the fitting kit and brackets. The kit includes 5mm spacers (which I can live with), to run under Volans. Just need to get a set of S60R discs, and some new DS2500's!

Pretty lucky tbh mate. The kit was listed on Ebay, excluding any discs and pads. I made an offer for the guy to end the auction early and sell them to me, of £350! Which I was very pleased with. Gen S60R discs £160 ish, and a set of DS2500 is £200 ish, so will have the whole kit with new discs and pads for around £700, which is a stonking deal for what they are. A proper quality big brake kit.

I had the exact same kit on my S70, and it is superb, on the road and track. Bloody mad that I'm buying back all the bits I sold a year ago! But hey ho!

I didn't really want to use spacers, but 5mm, I can live with.

I am going to get them refurb'd though - in white, with a black Brembo decal! I reckon they'll look ££££ing awesome!!

TBH mate, all those 6/8 pot calipers that are floating around, Ksport, Hispec, PB, etc... I've not heard good things, the calipers aren't of great build quality, and neither are the discs. Even the genuine AP racing discs aren't supposed to be of that great quality.

Unless you just want something for ultra bling factor, I'd stick with something that has been tried and tested, and works as it should. Stop Tech's are great, AP's are great, but if I had a P2, i'd just get myself some S60/V70R calipers and discs. If you're planning on giving them some serious abuse, steer clear of drilled discs as they will 100% crack between the holes way before the disc's life has run out.

Honestly, I don't think the Hispec or Ksport kits are going to be better than the R Brembos. If you want something that is possibly "better", then it would have to be AP's IMHO, but even then, they're not worth double the price!

££££ed right off!

The brakes I bought arrived today, and they are not as described! They are not 993tt fronts as advertised. After some research it turns out they are 996 rears, they are with the correct brackets to run on the front of the 850 with S60R discs, but not what I was lead to believe I was buying.

The guy who sold them to me said he wasn't any the wiser, and I tend to believe him. He sent me a link to his original purchase, and they were described as the proper 'Big Reds', so he didn't know any different. I knew straight away before opening the package, it was nowhere near heavy enough! It's highly unlikely he'll take them back for a refund though, bought outside of Ebay, and paid by Paypal gift.

I'm in two minds what to do;

Use them? Will they still do the job?
Use them for now, until I get some AP's or proper Big Reds?
££££ them off, and wait till a proper kit runs up?

That's a ££££ter mate, what you want is someone with a Volvo 850 that is using front suspension on the back of their car ;), that might be persuaded to take them off your hands.

I'm in two minds what to do;

Use them? Will they still do the job?
Use them for now, until I get some AP's or proper Big Reds?
££££ them off, and wait till a proper kit runs up?

I had these on my old C70 Chris and very happy with them. Greg bought them off me and I think he still has them on his T5R.

I suppose the only way to find out then would be to fit them I hope they are a good fit for you as im not keen on the Renault setup for the sole reason the disc is not being fully used.
As said before ide love the ap set up but the price for them is silly money compared to being able to fit big reds and new 18's for around the same cost if not less

Had some of that sun stuff today! So got outside and clayed/polished the remaining panels.

Everything has polished up pretty well. As much as I would like to get a full respray, I just think it'd be a big waste of money, so only the bits that really need doing will get done - Bonnet, rear door, tailgate, front & rear bumpers and headlight trims. It should be going to the bodyshop week after next, all being well!

Also had chance to 'construct' the new grill! Fit the new wipers and washer jets!

No mate, I'm getting pissed of tbh. The guy at the bodyshop has been on holiday for 3 weeks now. He should be back today, i'm giving him 2 weeks to get it finished or I'm taking the car as it is, an I'll take it somewhere else. I'm not really getting a huge amount done, but I made the mistake of saying that I wasn't in a rush and 2 months later, it's still sat there. It's taking the piss now.

The tax and MOT have both run out since it's been there, so it's currently sorn :-(

On a positive note, once it's back I have a definite plan of what I'm doing with it, and I have the money just to crack on and get the whole thing done.

The S60 is 100% going. That'll have to be broken, it's the only way I'll get any sensible money from it. A few of those parts will end up on the 850.

We have movement! LOL! I've been layed up for best part of a week with a ££££ed back, but popped in to see the sprayer guy today. It's very nearly done! Just need to fit the bumpers back on, and spray the door handles and mop it, so all being well it should be back early part of next week!

When I take the S60 up to Tims next week, I've got to pick up the fresh front seats. I also got a t5r gearknob and alcantara gaitor from Neal.

Really looking forward to getting it back now, and cracking on with getting the cosmetics A1. Then as soon as Tim can take it, get the goodies done!

Rightyho. Actually had a spare morning for a change! Had the car back for 3 or 4 weeks now, absolutely disgustingly filthy when it came back from the body shop. Needless to say with that, and the length of time they had the car, I won't be using them again. Fortunately the paintwork they've done is satisfactory, there's a couple of niggles if I'm being picky, but I may just be expecting too much, the rest of the car isn't exactly perfect.

Putting being a perfectionist aside, I am very pleased with how it is looking. Got the chance this morning to wash, clay, polish and wax. As it hasn't had anything since coming back from the bodyshop.

The sun didn't want to play ball, so the pics aren't great but you get the gist. The comparison between when I picked it up and now is like night and day!

Exterior wise it's getting there now. Still want to do a much more in depth detail, but need the spare time. So this was a pre-detail, detail!! In hindsight I think I will get the alloys refurbished, they're not in as good condition as I would like. Probably a shade darker than what they are now, the same as the S60R wheels. Got to fit the front splitter and roof rails. Also tint the windows.

I have obtained a Miltek cat back now, just need to decide on what tail pipe I want to end up with, I'm leaning towards the DTM style T5-R exhaust trim.

I also have some US style front indicators that I went to fit, and then realised that they don't have the side light, and the bulb holder is totally different. Not sure how i'll get those on yet, so may end up just getting new standard ones. The ones on the car now are skanky as hell.

I have colour coded door handles to fit, just building up the enthusiasm to tackle it! May be a job for Mr W!

New number plates on the way, and tailgate badges too. Not sure whether to run with the chrome, or go black?

Once the BC coilovers are fitted my intention is to run it as low as possible, without causing any rubbing issues on the arches.

Interior wise it needs work! The door/boot/bonnet shuts and inner painted door surfaces are seriously manky. I reckon a good day on those alone will be required to get them up to some kind of standard I'll be happy with.

Apart from the drivers seat (which is hanging!), the rest of the seats, carpets, dash, etc is all in good shape. Just needs a bloody good detail. The sort of thing I can do over a few evenings after work. I have new front seats ready to go in!

I have a walnut T5-R gearknob and alcantara gaitor. Plus a T5-R alcantara arm rest to fit. To the relief of some, the wooden steering wheel will be going. After seeing the job that Royal Steering Wheels make of retrimming, I'm going to get the original wheel redone, probably with some alcantara inserts.

As mentioned before, it has the blue R dials from the x70 series fitted, I'd like to get those out, and paint the fascia black to match the 850 interior, rather than the grey.

Think that's about it! Then it'll be off to Mr Williams for the real work to take place!
