I had the 1989 B230FT estate version G reg in blue......about 189bhp and quite pokey.

Had a Bleed Valve at 13psi with standard ECU but couldn`t get more than 20/22mpg and on 98ron.......very expensive to run nowadays!!!...but it did shift.

It would be interesting seeing that done to a limo.

Are you going to spray it black or keep it in the original paint?

Home made body kit might be the answer.

This was my 240 ....2.1 N/A Manual but with different headlights and protectors.....those wheels are standard fit.

I`ve had most different Volvo`s going but not the 400 series.

Also my 940 2litre Turbo Wentworth Auto with all leather interior ....had a new replacement engine in this one but still sold it after 6,000miles!!!!.....wanted my first T5 850 a `94 model...

Only concern yourself with the 2litre and 2.4litre turbo models. They are both based on the he B23 block which was first brought in in the 70s. While the engine stayed largely the same there are some key differences which are crucial to know about if your looking at power outputs higher than 250brake.

The most important difference come in the bottom end, namely the rods.

In 1982 the B239ET was introduced and this is a tough engine and can hold 500bhp without blowing apart. However in 1985 it was replaced by the B230FT which can in 3 evolutions. The first version from 1985-1988 was designed as a low friction motor and therefore came with 9mm con rods instead of the 13mm con rods as found on the earlier B239ET and it also used smaller main bearings. These 9mm rod motors struggle with 250bhp, let alone 500.

The second version was lightly stronger but still suffered from con rod problems. In 1989 the third evolution was released and this reverts to using the 13mm con rods. The 3rd version has no distinguishing features from the 2nd version but there is a date stamp on the block and cylinder head. If the motor your looking at is made after 1993 it will also have a piston cooling oil spray bar.

Of these engines a 2litre and 2.3litre version available, they are both as tuneable as each other. The 3rd version of the B230FT had very strong cranks but the rods will be at their limit at 350bhp. Luckily forged rods are available form the states for the 198GBP and they can hold 700bhp. The forged rods can be available in standard length or in an 8m longer version. This is so you can choose between standard pistons and forged versions. There are no reports of these Volvo engine cranks snapping so there is no need to go down the forged route here. If you want to increase the capacity of the 2.3litre versions the crank from the Volvo Penta marine engine can be used with standard length rods. This will give a 2.5litre capacity but you will need to change the pistons and there is a 3mm difference in compression height. Pistons are available from StenParnerMotor.se.

Sunday 6th April 2014, 21:15
The B239ET with 13mm rods 500bhp standard that's the engine to tune right there.

T5frankie
Sunday 6th April 2014, 21:16
i have the 9mm rods in my b230et motor, i aint looking for out and out power at the moment, maybe 240bhp, its pretty light, if the engine ever gets changed a T5 engine would go in

I know that feeling, I paid more for my spacers than I did for the alloys! I managed to get a set of Canopus alloys for £80 with tyres, so offset the cost a bit.

Quality aint cheap! A mate bought some cheap spacers, after 6 months he noticed vibrations, took the wheel off to inspect and found a huge crack running theough the spacer! Would dread to think if it had totally failed!

You will be fine at 15 psi or just tighten the actuator and leave the mbc off .are you hitting boost cut

Surely that can't be normal, we had an old "B" reg E28 525e (with the 525i head and a few other bits) in our family for many years and that would get over 30mpg at 60mph..............although that did have very high gearing, about 1700rpm@70mph or something.

This is practically normal as well....you were lucky to get what you did the way they say you drive :uglyhamme

You can`t do anything about it except get the 16valve unit but these are scarce, even years ago, and the consumption is not much better but.

My two 1966 740`s with non turbo just managed 28 to 30mpg on a long run.........i just called the scrap yard and they collected my `89 740 turbo all working etc. it was just tooooo expensive to run.

Your motor does look nice i agree but no good just parked up looking at it, your better off doing 22mpg in the 850R with 300bhp at least the consumption does get better when dawdling!

I think these cars have a valve that stops the circulation of hot water to the heater matrix. So engine is hot but heater is cold if the valve is off. Might be that? Just a suggestion

Where is that located mate?

Just reading from the net never done one but....

For Air Conditioned Cars: The heater water valve is installed in the engine compartment, right near the top of the transmission fill tube and under the intake manifold near the firewall. It's hard to see it and the area is crowded: best to feel down the bottom heater hose until you find it. Be careful around the throttle and kickdown cables so you do not crack the end fittings. To replace:

1.Disconnect battery ground. Pinch off both heater hoses in the engine compartment
2.Remove the vacuum line attached to the valve
3.Remove the valve. Clamp screws are 7 mm and you will need an extension and universal joint to access them.
4.Install the new valve and tighten the clamps. [RMagoo] The valve goes between the heater hose connected to the short pipe coming out the cylinder head and the heater hose entering the bottom tube of the firewall connector . The arrow on the valve points toward the firewall. The top heater hose goes to the red pipe behind the head leading to the water pump.
5.Install the vacuum line

For Heater-Only Cars: The heater water valve is installed in the left side footwell, up near the left edge of the center console behind the kickpanel. It is mounted to a plate on the firewall. It is round with a hose entering it from the heater core.

To remove:

1.Disconnect battery ground and remove left side dash under panel and air hose
2.Remove the accelerator pedal and the the ignition control box and, if you have it, the cruise control connector, all for better access.
3.Clamp off lower hose from valve to heater core
4.Clamp off lower hose in engine compartment then disconnect
5.Place cloth on carpet to soak up spilled coolant
6.Remove lower hose inside car connected to valve
7.Remove control housing from water valve
8.Remove plastic valve by rotating clockwise. Unhook cable
To Install:

1.Reconnect cable to water valve
2.Install valve by placing it on the mount and turning counterclockwise
3.Mount and adjust the control housing
4.Reconnect hoses under dash and in engine compartment
5.Remove hose clamps
Make sure that the heater hoses are held by the plastic clips that keep them away from the block, the EGR system, and other areas they can wear and leak.

Not sure if this is for LH- or RH-drive cars

Wednesday 14th May 2014, 13:53
with a/c is in the top heater hose going to the bulkjhead within the engine bar.
without a/c it is in a horseshoe shaper holder in the heater unit behind the dash.

I cant get the non a/c ones for a RHD car......

But the air gets warm if the cars not moving

jamesy12345
Wednesday 14th May 2014, 15:58
But the air gets warm if the cars not moving

strange one that. Could be just down to the engine warming right up on tickover and passing a bit more heat through to the matrix.

Does the air get just warm or hot when it's stood ticking over? If you stick the air flow on max and the heat on max, does the air start to cool off or maintain hot temperature?

If it doesn't maintain hot temperature then worth a look at that valve or whatever mechanism is between the heater control knob & that valve. Something is restricting flow I think

Just trying to come up with stuff!! Ignore if useless :)
