View Full Version : Rear Wiper Motor Goosed

My rear wiper motor is knackered, goosed, totalled. The wiper blade stuck so I have it a firm push and now it doesn't work, no motor noise, nothing but the fuse is all ok.

So I've taken the wiper motor out and then took it apart. It looks like the rod with the thread on the end that runs from the commutator and turns the white wheel inside had actually come loose meaning the brushes weren't making contact with the commutator anymore. So I repositioned the thread to sit on the white wheel, copper greased it and put everything back together, but no luck. The motor itself looks fine, no black soot or anything so I'm giving up and will get a replacement motor from a scrappy when I can afford it. In the meantime I'll just leave the wiper off but the motor assembly with the splined attachment in place to stop water getting through the hole in the back window.

It looks like the motor has been out before because one of the metal mounts that bolts the motor assembly to the back tailgate had snapped (see far right of bottom photo, you can just about make out the snapped edge on the very far edge of the picture!) Lots of things owner number 1 didn't tell me when I spoke to him.

Some photos......

Yes, but I don't think Adam comes on often. I can ask for you on Monday, but would have asked today when I was there if I'd known then......

Thanks for the input. What's the best way to try it direct to the battery?

When I had my wiper motor to bits to I think I remember there being a fuseible component in there. Worth taking the cover off the motor to check of if it doesn't spin with a voltage applied.

So a box of parts arrived today thanks to Andy at Norfolk Volvo Spares, the most important thing was the rear wiper motor that I've now fitted to the car and my rear wiper works again! :D  :B_thumb:

Changed fuse number 12 (15 amp in the boot), because it had blown when I forced the wiper arm and then installed the new motor.

Hopefully the new one won't keep freezing like the old motor.

Many thanks again to Andy at NVS! Just got to get those control arms polybushed now and then they can go on the car. ;)

Good idea getting the replacement arms James.

If you cover postage, I'll fit the polybushes for you to save you struggling. I think Hermes charge about a fiver each way for under 4 Kg.

You're right, I did but there is some play in them already, the bush seems to be coming away from the side of the hole in the control arm. But I do want to tighten up the front end a bit, I just feel it needs a 'tweak'......

Smashing Martin, thanks. There's something else I might send your way as well for some TLC (you know what it is ;) ), I'll see how I get on with removal first. Once the arms are Polybushed I'll whip it up to GRN or to BVS again to have them fitted, I can have the wheel alignment done at the same time then as well.

I'll PM you about it. :B_thumb:

Thanks Andy, the motor worked a treat although I was worried to start with because nothing worked until I realised where the fuse was for the wiper motor. Initially, I'd checked the front wiper fuse but then double checked the owners manual and found the rear wiper fuse (12) is a 15 amp fuse located in the boot.

I was thinking of asking you to check your stock for a MAF sensor too because I had classic MAF sensor issues today, went to put my foot down and the power was dead, engine holding back and then as it warmed up the power came back slowly.
