Had an interesting conversation about Volvos with the recovery man (who's building a GM powered hot rod). He's been picking up a lot of new Volvos recently due to electrical gremlins. He isn't impressed with the build quality of the 40 series(used to break them up), but I don't quite think he understood what a T4 was. Maybe he was too used to stripping down the smaller engined ones.

it jumped fine but there was nothing between the alternator and the battery, hopefully it's just a dead alternator and nothing worse.

I'd check the wiring from the battery to the starter, make sure it hasn't fried.
You had that loose connection which gained some heat, that will draw more current potentially burning out the cable.

Do you have any test kits there?

Let me know if you continue to have this problem and I'll come up to hopefully help.
