Oh joy another noise! When you take your foot off the accelerator you get a whining/scream noise. Doesn't really notice sub 40mph and seems to stop when not in drive. Only started this morning, any clues?

Could be clutch related, or maybe the aux belt has been slipping?

Any other alternatives will be turbo related & could be very bad. :-(

Check your aux belts for signs of cracking or being slack.

i'm thinking clutch, or (gearbox) bearing

I'd go with a gearbox bearing or thrust bearing - I've had my fair share of transmission problems!

Noise subsided when I put it in sport.....

The cars a auto box I think.

Does the alternator have a over-running pulley fitted they can make a fair bit of noise when on there way out.
Or could be the vibration damper on the crankshaft.

It could be lots of things, I hope it is a supercharger, but just putting this out there......

The first link is about the exhaust contacting the prop causing a whining noise, and the second a good place to find Volvo service bulletins:

That's my thought, if it is intermittent & related to acceleration then the aux belt is a prime suspect area.

My alternator went in October, cost nearly £550 to get it all sorted. It killed the battery as it went. Plus my aux belt was showing signs of degradation so it had to be changed too.

Take it to a garage for a free type winter check up & see if it has any odd battery symptoms.

Ok I did record the noise but all you could hear was road and cabin noise. Since Friday the noise has stopped so for now it's ok, I'm having it looked at on Thursday so will see. Thanks for all your replies.
