ok update its an intermittent problem temp on car is normal in middle, so guess its probably the valve thing any photos or instructions on how to replace it plz

Although the coolant does look pretty mucky It did when I got it and was wondering if it could be the head gasket but I done about 1000 miles and not had any overheating issues .

Mine had a similar problem, when I turned it to full hot so it would stay on hot and wouldn't go cold. A clip had broken meaning the plastic lever didn't engage with the cable lever. TBH the heater valves are cheaply made and crap, but still cost a packet to buy.
