So replacing the nasty degraded short rubber hose that sits on top of the turbo and connect to the hard(ish) plastic pipe that comes over the head to the intercooler

I found this inside the old one (loose)

22960

It won't go inside the hard pipe (or over it) - so where does it go ??

TIA

So that's why the engine was making that sound :)

Thanks for the pic
I read elsewhere that it was to stop the pipe from being crushed but it is definitely way too big to go inside that plastic pipe :slap:

without it, the pipe couild flex and pop off under boost. presumably it is there to give the clip something solid to tighten against.
bet that made a racket !

It's funny you should say that - went for an overtake and was rather embarrassing having to then crawl until safe to pull over!

I have measured the metal ring and it's larger than OD of the pipe ???!

maybe it is fitted inside when the pipe is formed and still flexible.

Just wondering is it meant to support the short bit of hose that links the turbo to the over engine pipe.

the connecting bit goes over the plastic pipe up to the lip in ian's photo
it must be to make it rigid.

I had similar issues when I added a BOV to the throttle intake pipe, the plastics in the volvo engines are fairly flimsy.

A heat gun & some bent nose pliers (large) to spread the pipe from the inside.

If you can get the ring back into it, do the opposite to get the hose to hold it, or use a hose clamp to draw it back on.

Think the best thing I can do is remove the whole pipe and try and get the ring back in

Best advice is to wrap the pipe below the connector point in something that will disperse the heat, maybe some silicone hose if you have some, or a wet tea towel if you don't. It helps to also have a bucket of water on hand to cool it quick if you're using a heat gun.
