Just bought an L plate t5 (i think)!!!!!.

Is there such a beast as an 850 turbo, or is that the t5. The reason i ask is the hand book says the t5 has a 30 second overboost facility raising power to 240 bhp and torque to 330 somethinks at 5250 revs +, 225 below.

I think mine is an import so may just be a turbo without this overboost thingy.

How do i tell without a rolling road test?.

Cheers

Where is your needle pointing into the white on your boost gauge when you are on full boost?

Avoid all confusion - get it RICA'd at VolvoTuning and avoid the "extra boost" feature!
More smiles per miles too!

I think about half way will check tonight!!!!!!

Turbo whine changes at higher revs and car feels more urgent, generally not looking at gauge too busy laughing!!!!

The boost guage isn't 100% accurate but it give a good indication as to what your boost is. Most standard T5's will boost to around the halfway mark.

but on my gauge on the dash, the boost isnt shown till half way. First half is black and 2nd half is white. So how can they boost to around the half way mark if the boost dont come in till then ? ( sorry if that seems a dumb question !!)

The black area indicates vac (turbo not in operation)

The white area indicates Boost (Turbo in operation)

The far end of the white section is arround 15 Psi

Stock boost levels for a T5 are arround 9

So you should be going at least half way to 3/4 into the white area.

Make sence ?

Hi, couple of things, the very early T5 was called the 850 turbo, it has weaker internals than the T5 and for that reason cannot have a full blown rica map, Adam jump in anytime here....;)

They were the same bhp from the factory as the T5 but just not as robust.

As far as I understood the weaker rods were fitted to all the pre OBDII motors, i.e. all pre 96

Yea thanks for that. If you split the gauge into about 10 segments i would say it goes to about 3 at upto 5k rpm than blips up to about 5 at over that, this is when the car feels and sounds different. Bounce of the limiter and it drops back to 3. I did do a fast speed drop down from 3rd to 2nd accelerating and the gauge wound upto about 7 for a moment. Had to behave then cuz i noticed plod behind, IN A VOLVO!!!!!!!.

Cheers

Sorry but that not a very clear description.

Does the nedal go into the white area ?

Try and describe it as %'s of in the black area and in the white area.

I think you have a few issues.

1) You probably need to do a "Stage 0" (http://www.volvot5.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=217)

2) You have a boost leak, part of which is coved in the "Stage 0" but you need to check you vac lines too, see Here (http://www.volvot5.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=280)

Keep me posted, and dont worry we'll get it sorted

I should have said in the white, so take 3 as 30% and 5 as 50%.

The car has just been serviced so id be surprised if there is anything was amiss, but ile start running down your lists and getting some new plugs etc.

How tune able are the earlier t5 taking into account your earlier quote with regards to weaker motors etc.

Cheers

Right that makes sense !

LMAO you have alot to learn. Most Volvo dealer wont even notice a poorly T5 unless you take it to them and explain in child like

It dont sound too bad but the boost is a little uneven.
You possably have a little vac leak or a ignition fault, possible fresh plugs, cap and arm would sort.

As for what the Motronic 4.3 system engines can handle, the only difference is the rods which cant handle any more than 1.0 Bar / 14.5 psi of boost below 3000 rpms. Above that as long as theres no det etc it will take pretty much anything you can throw at it.

I was running arround the 360hp mark @ 22 psi but I'm running a bit more throu the mid range now

When you say it has weaker internals, what do you mean ? I have a an 850 turbo but it is a saudi spec and is a 1995 model....It has been to VT and has had the RICA 304.....It hasn't gone bang yet, but I do have a squeaky serpentine and tensioner (occasional)
