850 t5 207k

Hello everyone-
Yes I did say free! The car used to be my brothers but hes just bought a jaguar xjs 1989 (only 18K) as he was worried his T5 would become unreliable as its done 207,000! (+don't ask why he thinks the jag will be reliable!! - hes abit mad!).
Anyway the car is: A red, 850 saloon, Manual, GLT but with 207k on it. Not a bad inheritance -better than a crap 306 anyway-
As ive just got the car I was wondering whether anyone has any tips for mantaining the car and keeping it heading towards starship mileage. You lot must know more about these engines than I do at the moment so any helpful comments wanted. (+ i have a lead foot sometimes! and will be using it on M4 alot london-Bristol).
P.s - was thinking of oil change in gearbox and engine (which oil is best) and also renewing the cambelt-
Pictures of the t5 and bloody jaguar to follow!!!
Cheers

I recomend an oil change every 5k for the engine, I use magnatec 10 -40 but shell helex is the recomended , a well looked after T5 will do 200k no problem, as yours has! I know of one with 460k on the clock!
Make sure the cambelt is changed every 70000 this should cost around £100 at a good independent, worth having the gearbox oil changed as I have heard they can get a bit knacked with 200k on, but hey what cant,
I bet you bro will be kicking himself in another year or so if you compare bills! :welcome:

LMAO !
Cant believe someone would give away a T5 just cos its got 207k on the clock  And replace it with a XJS
Fluids are the key to a long life.
I would say oil and filter as often as possible budget allowing so lets aim for 3k yeah.
Now oil should be fully synthetic and I myself rate halfords 5w40 ! Keep your eyes open they have lots of specials on this and you can get 2 x 5ltr bottles for £15 which makes 3k services painless !
Invest in a performance free flow air filter then that one less thing to worry about and @ around £40 pay for them selves quite quickly.
Front tyres are the only other thing you need to keep in mind as a heavy foot will cause T5's to eat them.
Here (http://www.volvot5.co.uk/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=23) you will find lots of useful information and some free mods to help release a bit more go.
Pay special attention to this (http://www.volvot5.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=217) section as most T5 niggles results in being something on this list.
Any questions feel free to ask.
Other than that enjoy you new best friend

I used Mobil 1 - fully synthetic last change, it felt smoother than the Magnatec I used before that! But steep on the $$$$ !
Also, had the CAM-belt done for just under £100. Last set of tyres Michelin Pilot Sport, 205-16-50/55 I think they were.
£89 a corner.
Don't some of the earlier 850s need a 50,000 Cam-belt change, rather than the 70,000?

So no tensioner then ?
And No 70k is the early one, it went to 80k afrer that.

Thanks for the tips. I'm gonna go through the check list and talk to my mechanic-Apparently its had some work done to a (high pressure) oil leak recently, ill update soon with some pics aswell.
P.s dont know why he wants an xjs-got it for £500 so i think it will be a short term car after hes fulfilled his arthur daily complex!!! still whats the point in complaining :dgrin: im not!! I think hes looking for an 850R as a long term plan - his only grumble with the old car was always spinning the front wheels!! and buying tyres!!

tensioner!? bear in mind my limited technical knowledge! would it need changing?
Because our belts last so long its advised to replace the tensioner and pulleys when changing the belt, as these are all parts within the timing system and if any fail the result will end with a snapped belt and a broken engine.
See this (http://www.volvot5.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=353) and you can see the price of parts, so when you get a £100 cambelt change that’s all your getting !
Basicaly here is what should be on your recipt for a Cambelt change:
1 Cambelt (pn 272327) £39
2 Aux Belt (No air con) (pn 9146973) £15.40
3 Hydraulic tensioner (pn 9146693) £61
4 Idler pulley (pn 8630590) £37
And these should be inspected for any signs of wear and replaced as required:
1 Water pump (pn 30684432) £64
2 Camshaft oil seals (front) X2 (pn 6842273) £6.30 each
3 Crankshaft oil seal (front) (pn 9458178) £11.40
